NCOP to discuss crime prevention strategies with KwaZulu-Natal police

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is set to take a proactive step towards enhancing safety in KwaZulu-Natal through an engagement with the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, on Monday, 4 August.
This high-level meeting aims to forge stronger cooperation between Parliament and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
A senior management team from the SAPS will also be in attendance.
The engagement will focus on identifying key areas of cooperation between Parliament and the police in the province.

This encompasses legislative measures to improve policing and public safety, analyses of crime trends and the SAPS' provincial responses, fostering community-police relations and accountability, and developing oversight mechanisms that support rather than obstruct effective law enforcement.
The meeting was spearheaded by KwaZulu-Natal NCOP whip Mzamo Billy and is part of a larger stakeholder engagement programme. Billy will be accompanied by a provincial delegation.
This initiative aims to strengthen cooperative governance and bring provincial issues to the attention of Parliament.
'The NCOP has a constitutional duty to listen and to act to ensure that national legislation and resources respond directly to the needs of provinces,' said Billy.
Billy highlighted the SAPS as a crucial partner, particularly in a province like KZN, which grapples with significant crime and safety issues.
"The engagement also seeks to build a stronger link between legislative oversight and operational policing realities in the province," said the NCOP.
The SAPS recently released fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2024/2025 financial year (January 2025 to March 2025), which revealed over the three-month period, there were 5 727 murders in the country.
Of the total murders, 1,193 were reported in KwaZulu-Natal.

EFF supports parliamentary investigation into law enforcement corruption Image: Ayanda Ndamane/ Independent Media The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has expressed its support for the newly established Ad Hoc Committee in the South African National Assembly, tasked with investigating serious allegations of corruption, criminal syndicate infiltration, and political interference within the country's law enforcement agencies. The committee is set to commence its work on Tuesday. In a statement issued on Monday by EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo, the party lauded the move as a critical step toward addressing the deep-rooted issues plaguing South Africa's justice system. The party warned that the committee's formation aligns with the EFF's longstanding call for a transparent and urgent parliamentary investigation into explosive revelations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. "We welcome the National Assembly's unanimous resolution to establish this committee, as a necessary first step in unearthing the rot that has destroyed the very foundations of justice and accountability in this country," Thambo stated. Nearly 500 illegal miners due to appear in Barberton court
JOHANNESBURG - Almost 500 illegal miners brought to the surface from a mine in Barberton in Mpumalanga last Friday are set to appear at the Barberton Magistrate's Court on Monday. The group faces charges of contravening the Immigration Act and trespassing, while others are facing charges of possession of gold-bearing material. Their arrest follows an intense operation by law enforcement and mine security as part of Operation Vala Umgodi in the province. The police initially estimated that 1,000 miners had been arrested but later revised that number down by half. Mpumalanga police spokesperson. Ppho Nonyane-Mpe: "Members of the SAPS, including the team that is working there in collaboration with home affairs officials, are currently busy with the purifying the number in terms of how many will be charged for what type of offence." Nonyane-Mpe said that an operation was underway to retrieve zama zamas that remained underground. "The plans in terms of the others that went deep, our members from Vala Umgodi, in collaboration with the mine security and also the Department of Minerals and Energy, will regroup and also esure that we communicate whatever action will be taken following this development."
