Indang. He stressed that GLCs should drive economic growth, create jobs, empower local entrepreneurs, and contribute to state revenue.
Advertisement However, he said, many GLCs have failed in their purpose due to political interference and poor governance, becoming financial burdens instead. Dennison called for a merit-based, professional approach in board appointments and transparent investment evaluations. Underperforming GLCs, he said, should be restructured or dissolved. He welcomed the formation of the Sabah GLC Monitoring Committee, viewing it as a vital step toward improving integrity, transparency, and accountability. Reform, he added, is not optional but essential for Sabah's economic strength and public trust. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Singapore-based Jetstar Asia to pay four weeks' salary per year of service to over 500 laid-off staff

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Retrenched staff will also get a FY2025 bonus, a special thank-you payment, and extended staff travel perks matching their years of service. — Reuters pic SINGAPORE: Jetstar Asia will cease operations on July 31, with over 500 employees in Singapore set to lose their jobs, parent company Qantas announced today. Channel News Asia (CNA) reported that affected staff will receive a retrenchment package that includes four weeks' salary for every year of service, a bonus for the 2025 financial year, a special thank you payment, and continued access to staff travel benefits for a period equivalent to their tenure. Advertisement 'We are committed to supporting team members who are impacted by this announcement the best way we can,' a Jetstar Asia spokesman said. 'This includes providing redundancy benefits, career transition support and roles and opportunities across the Qantas Group and with other airlines and aviation partners in Singapore where possible.' The Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU), which represents some of the affected workers, said it had been informed of the permanent closure and has been actively engaging with the company. 'We negotiated with the company to ensure that affected members and workers are treated with care and receive fair compensation,' said SMMWU secretary-general Andy Lim. The union added that it would continue supporting its members with job placement assistance, career advisory services and financial aid during the transition. The Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation, which includes representatives from the Ministry of Manpower, Workforce Singapore, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), also said it was working closely with the airline and SMMWU to assist the workers. It noted that Jetstar Asia had committed to a retrenchment package in line with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment. 'Our priority is to help the affected employees with employment facilitation,' the taskforce said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Petros standoff adds pressure as Petronas staff face job cuts, says Muhyiddin

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin urged the government to exercise prudence in its use of Petronas funds, especially at a time when national debt was rising and the economy remained weak. PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said today that Petronas's ongoing dispute with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) is putting more pressure on the energy producer amid its company-wide restructuring exercise. Muhyiddin said Petronas urgently required a long-term strategy to safeguard its sustainability and competitiveness as a state-owned enterprise, especially in the face of global headwinds such as falling oil prices and the accelerating transition to renewable energy. Advertisement 'The unresolved dispute between Petronas and Petros regarding gas distribution rights in Sarawak not only impacts Petronas's revenue, but also destabilises the wider oil and gas industry in Malaysia,' he said in a statement. Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president and Pagoh MP, cited a June 2 report by The Edge, which stated that several oil and gas companies in the country reported declining earnings or losses in the first quarter of 2025. A key reason cited was the underutilisation of vessels and delays in exploration activities, both stemming from Petronas's dispute with Petros. 'If this situation persists, it will not only place Petronas and its employees in a state of uncertainty, but also jeopardise the entire oil and gas ecosystem. Currently, over 70,000 Malaysians are employed in the oil and gas services and equipment sector,' he said. Last week, Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz announced that the company would reduce its headcount by more than 5,000 people to cut costs due to falling crude prices. Yesterday, Petronas reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding employee welfare amid a company-wide restructuring exercise that will cut about 10% of its workforce, including by offering competitive separation packages. On Saturday, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas's move to trim its workforce stemmed from global challenges and was not connected to the national oil firm's issues with Petros. Muhyiddin urged the government to exercise prudence in its use of Petronas funds, especially at a time when national debt was rising and the economy remained weak. He said the government should urgently table a sustainability plan for Petronas, along with a clear roadmap for the future of Malaysia's oil and gas industry. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Unemployment rate hits 10-year low at 3% in April

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the labour force is expected to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's unemployment rate dropped from 3.1% in March to 3% in April, the lowest in 10 years, according to a report released by the statistics department today. Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the number of unemployed people decreased by 0.7% to 525,900 in April 2025, compared with 529,600 in March. Advertisement 'A promising national economic position has contributed to stable progress in Malaysia's labour force, with an increase in the number of employed people and higher labour force participation rates, while unemployment continues to decrease,' Bernama reported him as saying. Uzir said labour force numbers continued their upward trend in April, increasing by 0.2% to 17.34 million people compared with 17.31 million in March. 'Consequently, the labour force participation rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 70.8% compared with 70.7% in March,' he said. In terms of the economic sector, Uzir said the services sector remains a key driver of employment growth, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, accommodation, food and beverage services, as well as transport and storage activities. He said positive trends were also recorded across the manufacturing, construction, agriculture and mining and quarrying sectors. Uzir said the unemployment rate for youths aged 15 to 24 years remained unchanged at 10.3% in April 2025, with 298.3 thousand unemployed youths. He said the number of people outside the labour force rose to 7.17 million in April compared with 7.16 million the previous month, mainly due to housework and family responsibilities, which accounted for 43.7%, followed by schooling and training reasons at 41.1%. He said the country's labour force was expected to remain optimistic and expand in the coming months, bolstered by strong economic policies and stable domestic demand. 'Despite global geopolitical tensions, Malaysia's labour force is expected to remain resilient due to stable unemployment, the growing services sector, and technology, as well as an increasing investment in digitalisation and automation,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
