RESIDENT ALIEN Recap: (S04E08) Mine Town

Resident Alien Season 4 Episode 8, 'Mine Town,' kicks the overarching narrative into high gear. With only two episodes left of the entire series ( sob ) after this, we're now hurtling toward what'll undoubtedly be an epic conclusion. Mike and Liv finally know that Harry is an alien. D'arcy exhibits more growth. Harry and Mike have a plan to take out the Mantid, but unfortunately, the Mantid is now Liv. 'Mine Town' is easily one of the best outings of the season thus far. It maintains a steady clip while delivering the show's trademark blend of humor and heart.

We open with Jules (Jewel Staite), aka the Mantid, arriving home after her encounter with Mike. She tells someone unseen that she must leave. Jules (Manules? Jantid?) ventures into the attic, where she keeps the real Jules trapped in a cocoon. Then, the Mantid stabs the real Jules, killing her.
Meanwhile, Harry (Alan Tudyk) now has to contend with more people knowing his alien secret: Ben (Levi Fiehler) and Kate (Meredith Garretson). Kate tries to wipe the alien germs off Max (Judah Prehn). She asks Harry to conceal the stone corpse of his late father. Harry committed patricide to save Max, and the Hawthornes are thankful, but it's a lot, y'all. It's overwhelming. Ben asks why Max didn't tell them sooner that the town doctor is an alien. Max reminds his parents that he did — they just thought he was 'broken' and tried to send him to that school in Georgia. So, there's that.

Elsewhere, Mike (Corey Reynolds) tries calling Lena again to warn her about Jules. He asks her to return the call. Oh, and Cletus is farting incessantly because he misses her. It's his love language. As an English bulldog owner, I understand this all too well.
Liv (Elizabeth Bowen) reveals that Jules is gone. She hightailed it out of town, it seems. Well, Mike believes she'll turn up again at the Old Mining Days Festival in a few days. It'll be a bona fide human buffet for the Mantid.
At the same time, Asta (Sara Tomko) and D'arcy (Alice Wetterlund) arrive at Harry's cabin. They learn that, well, the Hawthornes know everything. Kate calls D'arcy and Asta out for keeping her baby from her. Asta insists it was for a good reason. They had to protect not only the child but Ben and Kate from the Greys. Asta defends D'arcy, who's had a rough go of it, too. D'arcy tells Ben and Kate that she's in AA now. She's on a better path.

The conversation pivots to the looming threat the Mantid poses. Harry could use someone who can see aliens, like, say, Max. His parents refuse to allow Max to help Harry track down a dangerous alien, though. Kate asks Harry to stay away from her family before suggesting Mike and Liv get involved. Asta urges her not to disclose Harry's alien status to Mike. It could muddy the waters a bit. Small Town, Big Hearts
Ben admits he's not good at withholding anything from Mike. Mike can see right through him. Sure enough, the following day, Ben struggles to keep the Harry-shaped secret, well, a secret from Sheriff Mike. Mike informs Ben that Jules is the Mantid. As per usual, the two bicker in a clash of egos. Ben reminds Mike that he 'pretty much runs' this town. He even came up with the new town motto: 'Small town, big hearts.'
Mike proposes that Ben cancel the Old Mining Days Festival because of the Mantid. Ben claims he can't do that. He'd have to petition the town council, and the festival is in two days. It's too late to do anything. Meanwhile, Harry enjoys having his alien form back. We see him leaping out of the lake in said form like an extraterrestrial dolphin.

Then, Harry learns at work that Asta is considering leaving Patience. Dan planted those seeds. So, Harry presents a list of potential places they can move to, and all of them are big pizza cities. Typical Harry. Asta remarks that if she leaves town, she's doing it alone. That hits Harry where it hurts. How dare she leave her best alien friend behind? After this, Ben discloses the Mantid development to Harry. Now that he knows who the Mantid is masquerading as, Harry asks Ben again for Max's help. Max is the only person in town who can see aliens in their true form. Ben refuses to budge on this, though. Harry uses whatever leverage he has — Ben's therapy session shares. Ben fires back that Harry isn't actually a real doctor, and he expects the latter to refund him for those sessions. Ouch.
Meanwhile, Liv shows Mike something significant she caught on the camera she installed in the woods. It's Asta with a mystery person. She's carrying a shovel. Hmm. Elsewhere, Asta and D'arcy chat about the former potentially leaving Patience. Asta admits the idea of seeing what else is out there is alluring. D'arcy bursts into tears. She can't bear the thought of her BFF skipping town. Asta embraces D'arcy, reassuring her that she's staying.

At the same time, Dan (Gary Farmer) asks Harry if he'd like a slice of pie at the diner. Harry declares he's angry at Dan for putting a bug in Asta's ear about leaving. After this interaction, Sahar (Gracelyn Awad Rinke) slides into the seat across from Harry. Harry asks Sahar to break Max out of Hawthorne Jail. Sahar claims that Ben and Kate are adamant about keeping Max under their thumb ever since they learned that Harry's an alien. Well, if Harry can't have Max as a helper, Sahar will do. Sahar shows Harry the formula for her patent-pending Manticide. We see said formula swirling around Harry's head, along with a few stray pieces of pie (hey, the heart wants what the heart wants). Now that he has his alien energy back, Harry understands the formula.
Later, Mike and Liv search Asta's office at the clinic. They find a card from Joseph, who once gave her human flowers. Liv realizes that Joseph was in love with Asta. Asta returns to her office to find the sheriff and the deputy. Liv shows her the photo of her on the trail cam with a mystery person. Then, she whips out the card from Joseph. Asta immediately throws Joseph under the bus, claiming she was with him in the woods. They were planting radishes. Mike buys the lie.

When our pair is outside Asta's office, though, Mike admits that she was quick to pin it on Joseph. Liv surmises that she was with a different alien in the woods. It would have to be someone she trusts, someone she spends all her time with. That's when it dawns on Mike and Liv as they both stare at Harry's office door. He's the other alien . Finally! Not About You
Next, D'arcy visits with Kate. She apologizes for the other night at Harry's. Kate reciprocates, claiming she and Ben were overwhelmed by the alien reveal. Kate understands that D'arcy was trying to protect her and her baby. D'arcy admits that doesn't make it right, though. The conversation pivots to pictures D'arcy took of Kate and Ben's baby while the latter was with her. Kate learns that D'arcy named her child Daisy. However, Kate and Ben have settled on Isabella Rose after her grandmother.
Looking at the photos is too much for Kate. She's overcome with emotion. D'arcy wonders what's amiss. Kate reveals she can't do this now. She doesn't have the bandwidth or energy to make D'arcy feel better about herself. D'arcy storms out.

Meanwhile, Harry and Sahar work on perfecting the Manticide formula in his cabin. Asta stops by, revealing that Mike and Liv caught her and Harry on camera in the woods when they tried to dig up the Mantid. Well, just Asta, for now. Harry claims he's mad at Asta. But it's okay — he's got Little Asta (Sahar) now. An Unexpected Arrival
Then, Robert (Paul Piaskowski) shows up at the sheriff's office, much to Liv's delight. She informs Robert that his father is alive and looking for him. Initially, Robert is incredulous. He saw Peter die. Liv tells him that the government revived Peter. She can't contact him, but when he reaches out, she'll tell him that Robert is here. Elsewhere, Jules, aka the Mantid, spies a flyer for the Old Mining Days Festival. The 'All You Can Eat' tagline is really intriguing for her. D'arcy pops into an AA meeting, where Asta and Kayla's cousin from the reservation speaks about her experience as a sponsor. D'arcy recognizes her. She admits that she tried to make a situation about her before realizing, 'It's not always about me.' This statement profoundly resonates with D'arcy. I love Alice Wetterlund's performance in this short scene.

Later, the town attends the Old Mining Days Festival. Ben sports 10th-century garb, complete with a handlebar mustache. Mike insists Ben should've canceled the event. Ben counters that he doesn't want everyone living in fear. The Bait and the Lure
Then, Mike shows Liv the layout of the nearby mine, where he plans to lure in and blow up the Mantid. In the meantime, he'll watch Harry's movements. He believes, if anything, the only two aliens in town would know each other. At the same time, Asta discovers that Judy (Jenna Lamia) is dressed identically to her. It's no secret that, every year, Asta dresses like a town-famous historical woman who helped establish Patience in the 19th century. It seems like Judy is trying to steal her thunder.
Meanwhile, Harry also observes Mike from afar. He's using Mike as bait for the Mantid. Sahar is coming down with a case of secondhand embarrassment while standing beside Harry. At least they have her bottles of Manticide at the ready. Asta reunites with Harry, but he's still mad at her.

Next, Kate, Max and Isabella, aka Bella, are at a gas station. Max tries to persuade his mom to let him help Harry catch the Mantid. He procures his alien-hunting taser, which Kate confiscates before grounding him for eternity. While she's distracted, though, Max seizes the opportunity to escape. Uh-oh. Lena (Nicola Correia-Damude) enters Jules' home and searches it. She spots strange liquid dripping from the ceiling. Lena pokes that spot with a broom handle, causing Jules' cocooned corpse to fall through the ceiling and into the living room. Naturally, Lena is in shock.
Harry and Mike munch on turkey legs before admitting that they hoped the other would draw out the Mantid. Asta tries to tell Mike and Liv the truth —that Harry is an alien —but of course, they already know. They also know he was in the woods with her.

D'arcy approaches Kate again. This time, she apologizes for making the situation at the Hawthorne house about her. D'arcy admits she does this a lot, but she's aware of it now and will work on it. Aw. Look at how much our girl has grown. Kate accepts her apology and asks her to watch Bella while she searches for Max. Revelations
Asta performs for the festival attendees as the aforementioned historical woman. While recounting the woman's story, Asta has an epiphany that relates to her own life. Judy ruins Asta's a-ha! moment by lobbing a tomato at her. Asta chases her. Meanwhile, Mike and Harry approach the mine where they plan to trap/explode the Mantid. Max joins Sahar some distance away. That's when he spots the Mantid. And this time, it's someone they know quite well.
It's Liv. Liv glares at Max and Sahar menacingly before turning to follow Mike and Harry.

Piers Morgan Says Late-Night Hosts Are 'Hyper-Partisan Activist Hacks For The Democrats' & It's 'No Wonder' Stephen Colbert 'Got Canned'

While Stephen Colbert has received plenty of support from fellow television mainstays and late-night hosts following the unceremonious cancellation of The Late Show, Piers Morgan isn't among them. Earlier today, the British media personality took to X to slam Colbert and other longtime late-night hosts, alleging these figures were nothing more than puppets for the Democratic Party. More from Deadline Donald Trump Repeats False Claim Beyoncé Was Paid $11 Million To Endorse Kamala Harris; Calls To Prosecute Singer, Oprah & Al Sharpton Jay Leno Questions Why Late-Night Hosts "Alienate" Half Their Audience: "Get To The Joke" Stephen Colbert Praises 'South Park's Naked AI Trump PSA: "An Important Message Of Hope" 'This is so damning,' Morgan wrote alongside a cover of New York Post that outlined the political leanings of Colbert's guests, which skewed toward the left. 'Most of America's biggest late-night hosts have become nothing more than hyper-partisan activist hacks for the Democrats — a party that's rarely been more unpopular. No wonder Colbert got canned. More will follow.' Morgan, who has alternately supported and critiqued president Donald Trump and does not consider himself right-wing, continued his commentary in several other tweets, beginning with an endorsement of Jay Leno's recent comments questioning why late-night hosts would 'alienate' half their audience by 'cozying too much to one side or the other.' The host of YouTube's Piers Morgan Uncensored continued in another tweet, this time aimed at fellow U.K.-hailing peer John Oliver: 'UPDATE: Just watched a drooling @60Minutes segment tonight about John Oliver who was proud of telling his viewers not to vote for Trump at last election. He told them to vote for Kamala Harris instead. That's not comedy, it's partisan political activism.' And, when responding to a tweet by political commentator and MSNBC contributor Brian Tyler Cohen, Morgan stated, 'Trump didn't cancel Colbert… he cancelled himself with poor ratings, huge costs, and boring viewers with anti-Trump bias.' Just a couple days after Stephen Colbert ripped into parent company Paramount's $16 million settlement with president Donald Trump on the air — a move he likened to a 'big fat bribe' aimed to grease the Federal Trade Commission's approval of a year-long pending merger between Paramount Global and David Ellison's Skydance Media — he revealed to audiences that CBS would be axing The Late Show, the franchise first begun by host David Letterman in 1993. Executives defended the cancellation, calling it 'purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night' that 'is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.' Since Colbert made the shocking revelation public July 17, Trump has vocally celebrated the show's retiring, as a majority of the show's writers represented by the Writers Guild of America have called on New York State Attorney General Letitia James to launch an investigation into 'potential wrongdoing' at Paramount. This comes as a number of Senate Democrats, like Adam Schiff and Elizabeth Warren, made statements defending constituents' right to know if the series was canceled due to political reasons. In additional fallout, protesters gathered outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City where Colbert tapes to push back against the decision. As for Colbert himself, he has made it clear that he will not go gentle into that good night, telling Trump to 'go f— himself.' He added in the July 21 episode of his show, 'But [CBS] made one mistake. They left me alive. Now for the next 10 months, the gloves are off. I can finally speak unvarnished truth to power and say what I really think about Donald Trump. I don't care for him. Doesn't have the skillset to be president.' ‘I Charge Them More Every Single Time:' Tech Reveals 1 Quality Guaranteed to Make Your Mechanic Hate You

A mechanic who goes by Claw Boss (@reelclawboss) on Instagram shared a customer pet peeve: Asking non-stop questions while he works. And it seems like there are more than a few other folks in the craft who share his mindset. The auto tech's short clip is set to the tune of a song that repeatedly implores a person to 'shut the [expletive] up,' as part of its hook. Pairing this tune with the text overlay in their clip, along with a group of dancing chickens, intones that the service tech isn't a fan of this particular client interaction. 'We all have that one customer. Stands in the shop while you're working on their car and won't stop asking questions,' he captions Commenters Were Divided Folks had differing opinions on the clients they render service to in their respective auto businesses. One person remarked that a patron has the right to ask questions since they're the one paying for their car to be fixed. 'Customer's car, customer's paying,' one said. However, there was another Instagram user who seemed to concur with Claw Boss's commentary on the chatty individuals who roll into his shop. They said, 'Best part of our shop: Only staff allowed in shop.' Another person, who said that they were an auto tech themselves, echoed the aforementioned sentiment. According to them, they've never been employed in an automotive service center that allowed customers to watch the work techs were doing. 'Never in my life have I seen a shop allow customers in the shop,' they penned. 'I be on the other side of the glass like *hey, did you make sure to torq that bolt!? While I smoke my dart and continue to stare. Lol all jokes aside I do enjoy watching and learning.' But this didn't appear to be par the course for all folks getting their cars fixed. One person who got their vehicle's air conditioning system repaired expressed that they were grateful to watch their mechanic fix the issue. Moreover, they said the tech was forthcoming about the work he was completing. 'My mechanic let me watch him do my AC for my truck. I asked a few questions and he didn't mind. He seemed to like that I was trying to learn,' they said. Other Mechanics Sound Off It seems like Claw Boss wasn't the only service tech who took to social media to decry this specific customer behavior. YouTuber Barricade Garage also professed he wasn't too fond of someone looking over his shoulder while he was working on a car. In a caption for his video that touches on this same topic, he writes, 'most mechanics usually want to be left unbothered when working on your vehicle.' Additionally, Redditors in this r/MechanicAdvice post also discussed this same client phenomenon. The thread's original poster wanted to know if it was considered poor manners on his part to watch the tech replace the tires on his vehicle. One person remarked that the practice is 'a touchy subject with a lot of shops,' due to how different customers react to the work being performed on their vehicle. They said that customers might try to nickel-and-dime labor time, not considering that a mechanic who has accrued decades of experiencing fixing problems is able to rectify a problem more quickly than a less experienced tech. Thus, their complaints about inaccurate labor times are invalidated. To drive this point home, they shared an anecdote about a client who went 'ballistic' for being billed for 30 minutes of labor on a muffler replacement. They said the tech swapped out the component in around five minutes and asked why they were charged for 30 minutes of labor instead. Following this, the Reddit user explained to the customer, 'The guy who just put your muffler on has almost 30 years' exhaust experience. And has it down to an art. If I'd known you wanted to wait longer I would have done it myself - I'm a diagnostic tech and really bad at exhaust. It takes me forever,' they wrote. Some Mechanics Don't Mind Watchful Customers Another commenter in the same Reddit thread said it all boils down to the type of person who is watching them perform their work. This user said, 'I don't mind people watching because they are curious.' Although, when they begin to chime in with their own repair strategies, or when they reference other handy people they know, that's when they begin to take issue with sideline commentary. 'Don't call me a liar, and don't bring it to me to fix it if you trust [someone else] so much,' they penned. In this Quora post, some auto techs argued that barring customers from entering the shop area boils down to potential safety concerns. They said that due to heavy machinery, car lifts, and an array of moving parts, clients could be at risk of bodily harm. In order to mitigate these possible incidents from occurring and any legal actions that could be levied against the shop, many service centers will bar folks from watching their cars being worked on. Bill Clinton wrote a birthday note to Jeffrey Epstein, according to bombshell report

Jeffrey Epstein's birthday album included a letter from former President Bill Clinton, according to a new report. Epstein, a wealthy financier and convicted sex offender who died in jail in 2019, has been at the center of controversy in recent weeks after the Justice Department and FBI released a memo earlier this month stating there was never any Epstein client list of powerful people who may have participated in his crimes. During the fallout from the memo, President Donald Trump's past relationship with Epstein has been scrutinized, and last week, The Wall Street Journal released a report claiming the president had given Epstein a bawdy birthday letter, which reportedly included a drawing of a naked woman, as part of a leather-bound book Epstein's associate Ghislaine Maxwell prepared for his 50th birthday in 2003. Trump has denied authoring any such letter and is suing the WSJ, its parent company and owner Rupert Murdoch for $10 billion. Now, the WSJ has dropped another bombshell, claiming former President Clinton wrote a note to Epstein also included in the birthday album. According to the report released Thursday, Clinton had handwritten a single paragraph in the album, which read, 'It's reassuring isn't it, to have lasted as long, across all the years of learning and knowing, adventures and [illegible word], and also to have your childlike curiosity, the drive to make a difference and the solace of friends.' A Clinton spokesman declined to comment to the WSJ on the reporting and instead referred to a previous statement saying the former president's association with Epstein ended more than a decade before he was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. The statement also said Clinton didn't know about Epstein's crimes, the WSJ reports. The Independent has reached out to Clinton's representative for comment. Actor Kevin Spacey, who was previously acquitted of sexual offense allegations, recalled in a June 2024 interview with journalist Piers Morgan that he had flown on Epstein's jet with the late financier, Clinton and a group of 'young girls.' Spacey said he had been invited by Clinton on a humanitarian trip to Africa in 2002. Clinton has not been accused of any wrongdoing. The WSJ report Thursday mentioned several other high-profile names that sent messages to be included in the Epstein birthday book. The Independent has not reviewed or separately verified the so-called birthday book. The WSJ previously reported Trump's birthday letter to Epstein had included a note that read: 'Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.' On Truth Social, Trump wrote in response to the report, 'The Wall Street Journal printed a FAKE letter, supposedly to Epstein. These are not my words, not the way I talk. Also, I don't draw pictures. I told Rupert Murdoch it was a Scam, that he shouldn't print this Fake Story. But he did, and now I'm going to sue his ass off, and that of his third-rate newspaper.' Trump socialized with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s, but reportedly cut ties before Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution from someone under the age of 18. While Trump has not been accused of any formal wrongdoing or charged with any crime, his proximity to Epstein, someone he once called a friend, has heightened conspiracy theories that the government is withholding documents that could reveal embarrassing information about high-profile individuals. In announcing his $10 billion defamation suit filed Friday against the WSJ, Trump wrote on Truth Social, 'This lawsuit is filed not only on behalf of your favorite President, ME, but also in order to continue standing up for ALL Americans who will no longer tolerate the abusive wrongdoings of the Fake News Media.' A spokesperson for WSJ publisher Dow Jones said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press, 'We have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit.'
