The mystifying cult status of Gertrude Stein
Stein's writing career really began when, aged 28 (she was born in 1874), she lived alone in Bloomsbury and began to record in notebooks her thoughts, observations, descriptions of her surroundings and snatches of overheard conversations. In the spring of 1903 she joined her younger brother Leo in Paris, where the pair, supported by a monthly allowance from the family inheritance, lived simply – both always wearing plain brown corduroy suits. Under Leo's influence, they spent much of their allowance on works of art by emerging controversial painters. Their first major buy was a portrait by Henri Matisse that had been much mocked by the regular art crowd. Soon they were introduced to an unknown young Spaniard whom they were told was 'the real thing'. It was Picasso – so poor he had to share a mattress with a friend. As they bought from him, a friendship grew.
In 1907 came Stein's seminal meeting with Alice B. (Babette) Toklas, herself of Polish-Jewish extraction.

Pep Guardiola lifts lid on meeting Liam Gallagher as he hails Oasis reunion tour
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was spotted attending Oasis' homecoming gig this summer and has revealed what meeting legendary frontman Liam Gallagher was like Pep Guardiola has opened up on his meeting with 'kind' Liam Gallagher after praising Oasis as the 'best rock band of the last 50 years'. The Manchester band have been intrinsically linked with Premier League side Manchester City ever since bursting on to the scene in the 1990s. Both Gallagher brothers are huge fans of the club, but Guardiola returned the favour this summer during Oasis' much-anticipated reunion tour. The Spanish tactician attended their Heaton Park concert in Manchester in July and got the chance to meet Liam for the first time. Speaking about his experience, Guardiola said: 'It was really good. The first time I've been in this country so it was nice. Being here in Manchester, the first time. 'They came here after many, many years. They have been the best rock band in the last 50 years. And I'm happy it's back. 'It's the first time I knew Liam. Noel I've been with many times (at City games) but Liam I never met before and I met him before the concert and he was so kind.' And while Guardiola was delighted to meet Liam, his highlight was the concert itself, having praised Oasis as one of the best music groups of all time. He added: 'I don't know how many countries they sold out but that means how good they have been. When (people) say this team will be one of the best, I always say, 'Ask me after 25 years'. 'Then if people still talk about that team, it was a good team. It's like a book, if after 25 years people read the same book, that is a good book. 'It's like Oasis, no? They come back again and sold out all around the world, it is because they are good. Otherwise, it's not sold out.' Guardiola attended the Heaton Park concert sporting a classic Man City shirt alongside daughter Maria. The Spaniard also got the chance to meet the Gallagher brothers' children including Liam's sons, Lennon, 25, and Gene, 24, as well as Noel's three children, Anais, 25, Donovan, 17, and Sonny, 14. Noel has recently given his verdict on City's summer business and claims some players need to be sold. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: 'The numbers? No. If Pep says it's [the squad] too big then it's too big. 'But if you look at the players who weren't even on the bench, Rodri, Foden. It's too many. But the quality is unbelievable and I think when they're all fit, there's going to be a scramble for places.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Tributes pour in after sudden death of dad-of-two who 'lit up every room'
More than £15,000 has been raised on GoFundMe to support Jordon Foy's family in a few short days. The devastated family of a young dad have paid heartfelt tribute to the "generous" family man who died suddenly aged just 32. Jordan Foy, a devoted father to sons Leo, 11, and five-year-old Teddy, passed away on Thursday, August 14. Remembered as a hard worker and a 'fantastic father', his death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the community, reports TeesideLive. In just four days, more than £15,000 has been raised on GoFundMe to support his family and help cover funeral costs, with hundreds sharing touching memories of the dad-of-two. Jordan, from Middlesbrough, was a rigger by trade, and had most recently been working at the Tyne Tunnel and was due to start a new job in Somerset this week. He was described by loved ones as a man full of life, who adored spending time with his boys. His partner, Robyn Morley, told Teesside Live: 'He loved Boro and the football. He loved spending time with his kids and he was so full of life. He was hilarious – he always made us laugh. He loved his parents too, he was an only child and so close to them.' Mum Carol added: 'He loved his family and was so generous and sociable. He had a huge circle of friends from work and outside of it. Growing up he was brilliant, always busy, always out and about, and he adored taking the kids everywhere – holidays, swimming, the seaside, you name it.' Dad Gary said his son's wide circle of friends and the messages flooding social media showed just how loved he was. 'No one could have said a bad word about him – he was just amazing.' One of Jordan's more recent passions was karaoke, after Robyn put his name down for a song while on holiday. What started as a reluctant performance soon became his signature, with Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey becoming a favourite that he sang everywhere. His family say it will now be played at his funeral. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. More than 350 people have donated to the GoFundMe appeal, which has already raised £15,845, far surpassing its original target of £2,500. The family wrote: 'Jordan leaves behind his young family, who meant everything to him. His little boys Leo and Teddy were his whole world, and Robyn who he was obsessed with. No words can truly capture the pain of this loss, but we can come together to ease the burden for the family he loved so much.'

Today's horoscope for August 21 as Capricorn clings to the familiar
Today's horoscope for August 21 sees one star sign wants to break restrictions, as another has a bold idea It's Thursday, August 21, and one star sign carefully chooses who to share their feelings with, as another deals with sudden changes. There are 12 zodiac signs - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces - and the horoscopes for each can give you the lowdown on what your future holds, be it in work, your love life, your friends and family or more. These daily forecasts have been compiled by astrologer Russell Grant, who has been reading star signs for over 50 years. From Aries through to Pisces, here's what today could bring for your horoscope - and what you can do to be prepared. Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 20) A surprise change in plans will test your flexibility. You may not be pleased with circumstances you find yourself in but new arrangements will bring a better outcome than anticipated. Voice your thoughts clearly in a workplace meeting or official situation but stay open to new strategies. Taurus (Apr 21 - May 21) A change in daily routines is no bad thing when this allows you a chance to relax and switch your mind off responsibility for a short while. Patterns of thinking crack just enough to let creativity through. The unexpected inspires you to try something new. Gemini (May 22 - June 21) Your thoughts are racing ahead as you feel excitement for new plans now being set underway. Others are finding it difficult to keep up with you. Stay alert but be kind with it. A playful idea could lead to something that's worth pursuing seriously. Cancer (June 22 - July 23) Distractions will take you away from what you were meant to have been doing. A chaotic situation will be quickly calmed. Be sure to protect your peace while staying curious. A workmate will make a comment that upsets you, but this isn't a threat, just an observation. Leo (July 24 - Aug 23) The passion you have for your work, interests and art is magnetic. You may not realise how strongly some people are inspired by watching you. A strange text message could lead to a fresh understanding about recent community or political events. Someone trusts you with a secret. Virgo (Aug 24 - Sept 23) Your sense of order and structure wavers when a familiar routine is suddenly changed. Take a deep breath and go with this. Once new routines are established you will start to feel settled again. Don't overanalyse what isn't yours to control. Libra (Sept 24 - Oct 23) You're amazed by the social energy around you as people join forces to fight for a worthy cause. Be sure to use your charm and creativity to help support a fund-raising venture. People respect the way you are able to blend honesty with diplomacy. Scorpio (Oct 24 - Nov 22) Sudden changes taking place in the workplace or group project will test your patience. You get the impression someone is deliberately causing waves. Be patient until you get to the root of the problem. Once you do, you will come up with a great solution. Sagittarius (Nov 23 - Dec 21) You long to break free from current restrictions. You just want to walk away from commitments that you now know are holding you back. Adventures don't need a map. Just set the intention and go for it. It's a day to be spontaneous but not reckless. Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 20) Old agreements and arrangements are starting to crack under the weight of new ideas. You're tempted to cling to what's familiar but all this does is hold other people back when they are trying to promote new ideas. Currently innovation serves better than tradition. Aquarius (Jan 21 - Feb 19) Allow your creative energy to lead you. Don't push it down because it may not be appropriate in some situations. Instead, express your views with energy and flair. A bold idea will find traction if the right person finds it interesting and appealing. Pisces (Feb 20 - Mar 20) Your intuition picks up on what logic cannot explain. Be careful about who you share your feelings with as not everyone will understand. Don't feel bad about having to revise plans that you feel aren't going to work as well as someone suggested.
