Toyota Hilux tops the chart as the most stolen car in 2024
KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua and Proton cars, along with Yamaha and Honda motorcycles, top the list of the most stolen vehicles in 2024.
Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council (VTAREC) coordinator Mas Tina Abdul Hamid said this was based on statistics from insurance companies.
The Toyota Hilux tops the chart as the most stolen car in 2024, with 370 units reported stolen.
This was followed by the Proton Wira (142), Toyota Fortuner (123), Proton Iswara (92) tied with the Proton Saga (92), Perodua Kancil (89), Ford Ranger (79) tied with the Perodua Myvi (79), Perodua Bezza (61), and Honda Civic (58).
"If we look at this chart, we can see that many of the models are Proton and Perodua and these are older models, which we believe were dismantled and used for spare parts.
"Usually, locally manufactured vehicles are dismantled and the parts resold within the country," she said during a briefing at the soft launch of the VTAREC 2025 public awareness campaign on vehicle theft and road accidents.
Mas Tina said other-branded vehicles in the list were likely smuggled out of the country.
Meanwhile, the top 10 most stolen motorcycles last year were the Yamaha 135LC (528), Yamaha Y15ZR (327), Honda Wave (194), Yamaha 125 (109), Honda C100 (105), Yamaha Lagenda (72), Yamaha Ego (59), Honda EX5 (54), Modenas Kriss (48), and Honda RS150R (16).
Mas Tina said the vehicle theft trend in Malaysia had decreased by 10 per cent, with 3,925 cases reported last year compared with 4,370 in 2023.
She said the thieves' modus operandi had evolved, with many now hacking the key fob, a small handheld remote control device that operates a remote keyless entry system. This keyless system allows thieves to unlock the car, start the engine, and drive away without needing a physical key.
Mas Tina advised drivers to keep their keys in a Faraday pouch, which blocks radio waves, and to adopt traditional safety measures such as using a steering lock.
She also encouraged motorcycle riders to secure their vehicles with chains.

Current WorldSBK leader Nicolo Bulega is also set to join Ducati's MotoGP test team next year ahead of a potential switch in 2027 when MotoGP's new regulations come into effect. Pickup truck driver swerves to avoid puddle, triggers 4-vehicle pile-up
JOHOR BARU: A pickup truck driver's attempt to avoid a water puddle led to a four-vehicle pile-up along Jalan Lingkaran Dalam early this morning in an incident that has since gone viral on social media. The 5.50am crash, near Bangunan Sultan Iskandar here, involved a Toyota Hilux, a Perodua Alza, and two motorcycles. No injuries were reported. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said a 34-year-old man was driving the Hilux when he swerved to avoid a puddle in the left lane, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an Alza on the right lane. "The impact caused the Alza to slide forward and hit two motorcycles ahead, causing both riders to fall onto the road," he said in a statement today. A video clip of the accident, shared on TikTok and Facebook by user Mulan Woon, has since garnered public attention. Police confirmed they were alerted to the viral footage at about 10.26am today. "All parties involved have lodged reports, the case is being investigated for failing to control a vehicle while driving," Raub said. He reminded all road users to exercise caution during wet conditions and to drive within safe limits, particularly in low-visibility or water-logged areas.

Chinese national in Sibu jailed 5 years, fined RM20,000 for fatal crash that killed Sabah State Court director
Sun is led out of the courtroom following sentencing. SIBU (June 10): The Magistrates' Court here today sentenced a Chinese national to five years imprisonment and fined him RM20,000 in default three months' jail for dangerous driving that resulted in the death of former Sabah State Court director Marutin Pagan. Magistrate Rosli Ahmad convicted Sun Xue Song, 42, on his own guilty plea to an amended charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Rosli also ordered for Sun's jail sentence to run from the date of his arrest on March 30 and disqualified him from holding a driving licence for five years. Sun committed the offence on March 30 at around 1pm at the Kanowit roundabout here. According to the facts of the case, Sun, who was driving a Proton X70, deliberately ignored the give-way road markings leading to the roundabout as he proceeded to drive dangerously before colliding with a Toyota Fortuner. Marutin, 56, and three other passengers were travelling in the Toyota Fortuner driven by his daughter, which was heading towards the Sibu exit. Sun's act of dangerous driving resulted in a collision between the two vehicles, which caused the Toyota Fortuner to roll several times before ending up on its side off the roundabout. Marutin, who sustained several injuries due to the incident, was taken to Kanowit Hospital where he later died. A post-mortem result determined his cause of death as head and chest injuries due to a road traffic crash. In mitigation, Sun, represented by defence counsel Terence Tiong, requested the court to consider his clean record, full cooperation with authorities, genuine remorse, financial assistance to the victim's family, dependents' plight, and the unintentional nature of the tragedy. Tiong said Sun is supporting his seven-year-old son and 70-year-old mother, who rely entirely on his income, care, and support for their survival and well-being. The first-time offender with no previous convictions in Malaysia or his home country had given RM70,000 to Marutin's widow as a bereavement payment to express deep remorse and sorrow. Tiong said Sun had also entered a guilty plea at the earliest opportunity. He added another mitigating factor was that the scene of the accident at Jalan Kanowit-Durin is known as an accident-prone area. In her submission, deputy public prosecutor Cynthia Emmelda Jerry requested the court to consider the degree of culpability where Sun had deliberately ignored the road markings before dangerously driving into the roundabout. She also submitted that the sentence to be imposed must have a deterrent effect on other potential road users as well as for public interest.
