Toyota Hilux tops the chart as the most stolen car in 2024
Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council (VTAREC) coordinator Mas Tina Abdul Hamid said this was based on statistics from insurance companies.
The Toyota Hilux tops the chart as the most stolen car in 2024, with 370 units reported stolen.
This was followed by the Proton Wira (142), Toyota Fortuner (123), Proton Iswara (92) tied with the Proton Saga (92), Perodua Kancil (89), Ford Ranger (79) tied with the Perodua Myvi (79), Perodua Bezza (61), and Honda Civic (58).
"If we look at this chart, we can see that many of the models are Proton and Perodua and these are older models, which we believe were dismantled and used for spare parts.
"Usually, locally manufactured vehicles are dismantled and the parts resold within the country," she said during a briefing at the soft launch of the VTAREC 2025 public awareness campaign on vehicle theft and road accidents.
Mas Tina said other-branded vehicles in the list were likely smuggled out of the country.
Meanwhile, the top 10 most stolen motorcycles last year were the Yamaha 135LC (528), Yamaha Y15ZR (327), Honda Wave (194), Yamaha 125 (109), Honda C100 (105), Yamaha Lagenda (72), Yamaha Ego (59), Honda EX5 (54), Modenas Kriss (48), and Honda RS150R (16).
Mas Tina said the vehicle theft trend in Malaysia had decreased by 10 per cent, with 3,925 cases reported last year compared with 4,370 in 2023.
She said the thieves' modus operandi had evolved, with many now hacking the key fob, a small handheld remote control device that operates a remote keyless entry system. This keyless system allows thieves to unlock the car, start the engine, and drive away without needing a physical key.
Mas Tina advised drivers to keep their keys in a Faraday pouch, which blocks radio waves, and to adopt traditional safety measures such as using a steering lock.
She also encouraged motorcycle riders to secure their vehicles with chains.

Maybank Islamic, Perodua offer 'flexible' vehicle ownership plan for Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank Islamic Bhd and Perodua have jointly introduced Malaysia's first Shariah-compliant agility financing plan, offering customers greater flexibility and accessibility in vehicle ownership. The Perodua Flexiplan, powered by Maybank Islamic myimpact Drive Financing-i, is the first collaboration of its kind for both companies. It features a Murabahah vehicle term financing arrangement, resulting in lower monthly payments over an initial five-year term. Under the scheme, customers can choose to trade in their Perodua vehicle at year five for a new model. Perodua is offering a buy-back price competitive with market value or opt to keep their existing vehicle under a revised payment plan for up to four more years. Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the plan is available for four models: Myvi, Axia (excluding the Axia E), Ativa and Aruz. The collaboration is aimed at delivering a win-win solution for all parties involved "Today, both Perodua and Maybank Islamic broke new ground as we join forces to offer the best possible financing package which ensures everybody wins; Perodua, Maybank Islamic and especially, our valued customers," he said. "We believe that with the backing of Malaysia's biggest bank combined with the trust that we have earned from Malaysians, the Perodua Flexiplan will be well accepted." Maybank group CEO of community and financial services Syed Ahmad Taufik Albar said the financing plan reflects the bank's values-based approach to customer service. "Across the Maybank Group, we have always been committed to empowering our customers with flexible, transparent, inclusive, and sustainable financial solutions, and Maybank Islamic myimpact Drive Financing-i is a reflection of that," he said. The innovative approach to all Malaysians alongside Perodua, addresses the preferences of modern car buyers and empowers them with flexible ownership choices, he added. The plan integrates other Shariah-compliant offerings such as Perodua Total Protect Plus comprehensive takaful underwritten by Etiqa, which includes RM5,000 special peril coverage, and Credit Reducing Term Takaful for added protection. Both companies said the initiative not only enhances car ownership accessibility but also creates a convenient structure for customers to adapt their vehicle choices to different life stages, setting a new benchmark in Malaysia's automotive financing landscape.

MCE Holdings eyes expansion phase amid contract wins
PETALING JAYA: MCE Holdings Berhad is entering a multi-year growth phase, underpinned by landmark contract wins, strategic global expansion and a diversification into high-value automotive electronics. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research has initiated coverage with a 'buy' rating and a target price of RM2.40, implying a 66.7% capital upside. It sees MCE as 'a resilient, scalable proxy to Malaysia's transition towards high-value auto electronics and the global 'China + N' supply chain realignment'. At the heart of MCE's growth outlook is its breakthrough entry into the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain for Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua). HLIB Research reported that the company secured contracts to supply high-value infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), raising potential revenue per vehicle to approximately RM3,000, which is 10 times its traditional content value. The research unit estimated annual revenue from this programme to reach RM39.8mil to RM59.7mil, or up to 38% of turnover for the financial year ended July 2024 (FY24), if Perodua meets its targeted sales volumes. MCE is also accelerating its international presence, with significant wins in the US market. Contracts with Nasdaq-listed Dorman Products and Michigan-based JVIS USA will add a combined RM30.3mil in annual revenue at full ramp-up. HLIB Research noted that these contracts were secured via competitive global tenders, underscoring MCE's 'technical credibility and global competitiveness'. Beyond automotive, the group is also moving into new verticals. A joint venture with Hong Kong's Sounding Industries will produce non-automotive products with minimal capital expenditure, while a partnership with China's Nanjing Chuhang Technology will position MCE in the fast-growing mmWave radar segment for ADAS. In addition, HLIB Research reported that financially, MCE has turned around its pre-FY22 losses, supported by Proton Holdings Bhd's sales recovery and deeper supply ties with Perodua. Core earnings are forecast to grow at a 15.8% compounded annual growth rate between FY25 and FY27, reaching RM27mil by FY27, with full-year contributions from EV, export and non-automotive contracts. The group's balance sheet remains strong, with net cash of RM83.6mil, or about 42% of market capitalisation.
