The Chronicle's All-Metro regional softball players of the year
Gianna Galarza (St. Ignatius): The junior catcher earned first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League honors by hitting .515 (35-for-68) with 24 RBIs, seven doubles and four home runs, all team bests. In 84 plate appearances, Galarza struck out just twice and drew 15 walks as she posted a .607 on-base percentage with a 1.401 OPS. The third-year starter also threw out nine runners trying to steal and had just two errors in 183 total chances. A model of consistency, Galarza had hits in 22 of 23 games, starting the season on a 16-game hitting streak.
Ava Bulanti (St. Francis): The senior pitcher and slugger was Co-WCAL Pitcher of the Year for the Chronicle's No. 1 team, going 14-1 with a 1.96 ERA. A Stanford commit, Bulanti struck out 112 in 93 innings with 29 walks. She also blasted a team-best eight home runs and hit .398 with eight doubles to help the Lancers win WCAL and Central Coast Section Open Division titles. The Livermore Stampede Tournament MVP had 64 hits, 60 RBIs and 27 extra-base hits during her three-year varsity career.
EAST BAY
Andrea Tall (Newark Memorial): The San Diego State-bound infielder had a monster senior season, hitting .607 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs for the Cougars (18-5). Tall's home run total bettered the previous North Coast Section single-season record of 15 but was surpassed this season by Metro overall Player of the Year Delaney Aumua's 19. Tall finished with 51 hits in 84 at-bats with 13 additional extra base hits (seven doubles, six triples). In a 9-0 win over Redwood-Larkspur in a North Coast Section Division 2 playoff game, she went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and home run. Her biggest power surge was blasting two home runs, driving in eight and going 4-for-4 in a 30-4 win over Irvington. She had at least three hits eight times.
Callie Howard (Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa): The UC San Diego signee earned North Bay League Oak Division Player of the Year/Pitcher of the Year honors by going 21-6 with a 1.37 ERA and leading the Cardinals to their fourth straight NCS championship. Howard struck out a career-high 260 batters in 163 innings. In the NorCal Division 2 playoffs, she pitched complete-game wins over Calaveras (5-1) and Pinole Valley (1-0) — allowing just seven hits and striking out 19 against zero walks — before losing a 1-0 to Hillsdale-San Mateo in the title game. She also hit .367 with 33 hits on the season.

Astros Ace Tagged As Headlining Free Agent Starter This Offseason
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez is getting ready to hit the open market, and R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports projects that he could land a similar deal to left-hander Max Fried this winter. Fried received an eight-year $218 million deal with the New York Yankees last winter, and Valdez has been a reliable arm with Cy Young votes in four of his last five seasons. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 09: Framber Valdez #59 of the Houston Astros pitches during the first inning against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on August 09, 2025 in the Bronx borough of New York City. More Photo byValdez has thrown among the most innings pitched in the last five seasons, combined with a 2.97 ERA this season. The Astros' lefty has been one of the most effective and reliable arms in all of Major League Baseball. Valdez is also a two-time All-Star, and despite not winning any awards or statistical categories, he has received votes for MVP, along with the aforementioned Cy Young votes. Much like Fried, teams will be looking to land the consistent lefty on the open market, and he could be in line for a contract of $27 million annually. Valdez turns 32 in November and has been exceptional with keeping the ball in the yard, leading the league this season with a 0.5 HR/9. His ability to keep the ball on the ground has contributed to this, as during his career 62% of all batted balls were grounders. Fried may have held a higher pedigree than Valdez, but with him as the headliner, in the winter, teams will be enticed by a lefty that keeps the ball down and can strike out one batter an inning. Valdez is headed down the stretch to add another World Series title to his trophy case before reaching free agency. Clemson HC Dabo Swinney shares injury update on Adam Randall, multiple Tigers in camp
Clemson football's second scrimmage of fall camp brought encouraging news for one position group, but also highlighted a few lingering injury situations as the countdown to the season opener against No. 9 LSU continues. Senior running back Adam Randall was back in action Thursday after missing some practice time earlier in the week with a minor injury. The former wide receiver, who transitioned to the backfield ahead of last year's College Football Playoff game against Texas, didn't waste time making his presence felt. According to Dabo Swinney, Randall broke free for a 50-plus yard run early in the scrimmage and added several other chunk plays throughout the day. With Jarvis Green already sidelined long term and Jay Haynes still rehabbing from last December's ACL injury, Randall's health will be vital for a position group that can't afford another major setback. While Randall was making plays, the Tigers were without veteran right guard Walker Parks, who suffered an injury during the first scrimmage last weekend. Swinney said the fifth-year senior is expected to be ready for the opener, but the staff has contingency plans in place. Junior Harris Sewell, a former Top 100 prospect with eight career starts, and sophomore Elyjah Thurmon, who has worked at all five spots on the offensive line, have been getting work at right guard. Parks has battled through adversity before, missing most of the 2023 season before returning to start all 14 games last fall and earning third-team All-ACC honors. In the secondary, junior safety Khalil Barnes remains limited by a minor injury that has kept him out for over a week. Barnes participated in situational work Thursday but did not see live snaps. The Georgia native quickly became one of Clemson's most impactful defenders as a freshman in 2023, earning All-American recognition with three interceptions, three forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown. He followed that up last year by leading the team with four picks, becoming the first Tiger to reach that mark since 2019. Clemson now shifts its focus to the final stretch of camp, hoping to have its key contributors healthy and ready when the Tigers take the field against LSU on August 30. College Football Countdown: SFA adjusts to life back in SLC
Coming off a title in the Western Athletic Conference, Stephen F. Austin came back to the Southland last year with high hopes. Things didn't work out perfectly for the Lumberjacks, who gave away a couple of games that proved costly in the end. They finished 7-5 overall and 4-3 and third place in the conference. 'We came back to a different Southland Conference,' head coach Colby Carthel said. 'It was much improved, and we found some ways to lose games.' Led by the return of Sam Vidlak, the SLC's top quarterback, the Jacks have high expectations. Vidlak was injured late in the season, missing the final three games, which might have cost SFA a playoff spot. 'Health-wise, I'm ready to go,' Vidlak said. Vidlak connected 67.7 percent of his passes for 2,387 yards and 27 touchdowns to four interceptions last season. He also has his top returning target, Kylon Harris, who made 87 catches for 1,039 and 10 touchdowns. 'It is great to be back with Kylon after last year,' Vidlak said. 'I'm really thankful to be surrounded by the teammates I have. Kylon is a special player, and I think we have a special relationship.' As if the offense wasn't strong enough, the Jacks added former Big 12 Freshman of the Year Richard Reese at running back. He earned that honor in 2022 and is ready for his final college season. While the offense led the Southland, so did the SFA defense, which often gets overlooked. Two all-SLC players return on that side of the ball, led by preseason all-American defensive back Charles Demmings. 'We got an offense that is lights out, but as a defense, we know what we are and what we are capable of,' defensive tackle Ky Thomas said. 'We know what we can do. We play fast and we play free.' The defense allowed 17.8 points a game last season while scoring at a 35.6 clip. The Lumberjacks say that they let last season slip away, which can make them dangerous this season. 'We are coming in with a chip on your shoulder and our chins out,' Carthel said. 'We are looking forward to seeing what we can do.' SFA was picked second in the conference preseason poll but has the talent to win the conference and make a deep playoff run. Keeping healthy, especially Vidlak, who is a Walter Payton Award candidate as the best player in Football Championship Subdivision. If that happens, it could be a special season at SFA.
