Chip Kelly: Not many humans have size and speed like Raiders rookie WR Dont'e Thornton
That led the Raiders to draft Thornton in the fourth round despite minimal production in college: He caught just 65 passes in four seasons of college football, two at Tennessee and two at Oregon. Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly says that a unique talent like Thornton can develop into a productive receiver, even if he hasn't done it yet.

"I think Dont'e is unique in terms of he's just a hair under 6-5 and he ran 4.3. There's not a lot of humans on this planet that do that," Kelly said, via Raiders.com. "And I think if you had a draw up an outside receiver, you would pick that type of body type, someone that's got length, someone that's got a huge catch radius, but also has speed. Sometimes you can get a big guy like that, but he can't really run, so they can stay with him. So, you add that speed element to him, his ability to sink his hips, his ability to get in and out of cuts."
The Raiders have a long history of valuing physical attributes like size and speed, and General Manager John Spytek said Raiders owner Mark Davis knows his father, Al Davis, would have loved Thornton.
"Mark joked that was the Al Davis pick of this draft," Spytek said. "The height, weight, speed, raw traits, athleticism, speed, and I think it's just focusing on what he can do and what he can be. . . . You watch his target tape, I think it's pretty impressive. And we think he hasn't hit his ceiling yet."
The Raiders think they added a uniquely talented receiver when they brought Thornton to Las Vegas.

The Nationals loaded the bases in the third on two walks and a catcher's interference. Their first hit of the night was an RBI infield single by CJ Abrams, and Bell followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Senga has allowed 18 earned runs over 27 innings in his past six starts for a 6.00 ERA. ATLANTA (AP) — Hurston Waldrep struck out a career best-tying seven in seven innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Wednesday night. Marcell Ozuna scored from third base in the fourth inning on an infield error as Atlanta took the rubber game of the three-game series. Raisel Igelesias pitched the ninth for his 21st save. Chicago has now lost six of its last seven games and 13 of its last 16. Waldrep (4-0) in the fifth start of his career allowed just four hits and walked one. MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcántara pitched two-run ball for seven innings, rookie Máximo Acosta homered for his career hit and the Miami Marlins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Wednesday night. Heriberto Hernández had three hits and two RBIs and Troy Johnston singled twice for the Marlins, who avoided a three-game series sweep. Alcántara (7-11) scattered five hits and struck out a season-high nine. It was the 29-year-old right-hander's third outing of the season that lasted seven innings. Acosta, who was hitless in eight at-bats since being called up Monday, hit a fastball from Cardinals starter Andre Pallante 418 feet over the wall in center in the sixth inning to increase Miami's lead to 5-2. The Cardinals had cut their deficit to 4-2 in the top of the inning Willson Contreras' solo homer, his 17th.
