Pay ₹8 lakh compensation to kin of man who died after falling from moving train: Delhi HC to Railways
The court set aside a decision of the Railway Claims Tribunal (RCT), which had rejected the family's claim for compensation, stating that the deceased was travelling on an expired ticket.
The deceased, Lakhan Anuragi, was travelling with his sister and nephew on the Mahakaushal Express from Mahoba railway station in Uttar Pradesh to Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station on the night of October 3, 2017.
Anuragi reportedly fell off the train near Bhandai in U.P. in the early hours of October 4 and succumbed to his injuries.
Representing the family, advocate Vrinda Kapoor argued that the deceased had travelled with valid tickets, purchased from the railway booking window.
The High Court, in its May 30 judgment, overturned the RCT's decision, stating that the family's long wait at the platform and their reason for not boarding the earlier train — likely due to overcrowding and safety concerns — were both reasonable and indicative of legitimate travel intent.
Rejecting the contention that the ticket expired at midnight, the court held that the ticket, having been issued at 5.26 p.m. on October 3, 2017, remained valid for 24 hours.
'In the absence of any explicit stipulation on the face of the ticket or any statutory prescription to the contrary, it cannot be presumed that the validity of the journey ticket expired at midnight,' the court noted.

Hyderabad: Secunderabad railway station, one of India's largest, is set to enhance its security infrastructure through the implementation of a facial recognition system. The initiative is part of Indian Railways' efforts across seven major stations nationwide. The surveillance system will automatically notify the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) when a known offender enters the station premises, with these cameras continuously monitoring their movements. An alarm will sound in the control room as soon as an offender sets foot in the railway premises. 'Under the Nirbhaya funds, these surveillance cameras costing Rs 4.5 crore shall be positioned at every entry and exit point of Secunderabad station. The Research Designs & Standards Organisation has initiated trial operations and system evaluations. The station requires the installation of around 10 such cameras. Previously, while the city police installed similar cameras, they were removed during station redevelopment activities," said a senior official in SCR. According to officials, this advanced surveillance initiative aims to enhance security across railway stations. The system will analyse facial features and match them with the database of previous offenders. When a match occurs, the control room staff will receive instant notifications and can track the person's movements in real-time through networked cameras. The database will include comprehensive details such as physical descriptions, past criminal records, and patterns of offences. This digital tracking system will particularly focus on pickpockets, luggage thieves, and chain snatchers who frequently target railway passengers. Over the past 18 months, railway stations and trains in SCR jurisdiction documented around 600 theft cases. The facial recognition system will also be deployed at Mumbai, New Delhi, Howrah, Sealdah, Patna, and Chennai railway stations.

Meerut: Drunk army man drives car on platform to help kin board train

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle sped dangerously close to the Naucharndi Express as it was departing, forcing passengers to run for safety. 'He drove very fast, almost parallel to the train. People were shouting and trying to get away,' Rajveer Singh, a witness, said. GRP inspector Vinod Kumar said Sandeep claimed he was trying to help his relatives board the train as they needed to reach Delhi urgently due to a medical emergency in the family. The family had missed the 'Yoga Express' and were returning home when they spotted the approaching 'Nauchandi Express'. In an attempt to help them board the general coach at the front, Sandeep drove the vehicle through the station premises and onto the platform. The car remained on the platform for nearly 20 minutes before RPF personnel and railway staff intercepted and detained the driver. RPF inspector Dharmveer Singh confirmed that Sandeep was heavily drunk at the time of arrest. 'He was taken into custody and will be produced before the court on Saturday. The military police have also initiated a parallel inquiry,' he said. Police said the FIR has been registered under sections 145(B), 147, 154, and 159 of the Railways Act and section 34 of the Police Act. A medical examination confirmed the accused was driving in an inebriated condition. The GRP inspector added that the process for cancellation of the accused man's driving licence has also been initiated. Authorities are now investigating how the vehicle breached platform security.

HC upholds charges against suspended Delhi govt official Khakha
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has reportedly refused to quash the charges framed against suspended Delhi government official Premoday Khakha, who allegedly raped a minor girl several times. The High Court also upheld the charges of causing the minor girl's miscarriage and the disappearance of evidence framed against the official's wife, Seema Rani. It further refused to set aside the charge against his two children and wife under Section 21 of the POCSO Act for failure to report the offence despite having knowledge. 'This court is of the considered opinion that there is no perversity or legal infirmity in the order passed by the sessions court framing charges against petitioner Premoday Khakha for offences under Sections 376(2)(f), 376(3), 323, and 354 of the IPC, and Sections 6 and 8 of the POCSO Act,' Justice Swarana Kana Sharma said in the judgment passed on July 15 and made available on July 28.
