Fundraising event to relocate historic 118-year school
Hundreds of participants, including students, alumni and community well-wishers, flooded the school grounds for the event, which featured 1km and 3km competitive races and family-friendly walk.
The run marks the first major fundraiser for the school's highly anticipated move, aiming to secure a modern learning environment for future generations.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, a proud alumnus, hailed the relocation as 'a transformative leap for education in Sandakan.'
'This isn't just about a new building. It's about building the future,' said Joachim, who also serves as Sabah's minister of Local Government and Housing.
'For 118 years, Sung Siew has shaped leaders. Now, we ensure it continues to do so with facilities that match its legacy.'
The move will expand learning spaces for growing student needs, modernise facilities to foster innovation and preserve the school's heritage while embracing progress.
Joachim proposed making the OSSR an annual event, ensuring sustained support for the relocation and promoting community unity.
Key figures in attendance were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Datu Roslih Datu Siabok from the District Education Office and Sandakan Municipal Council president Walter Kenson.
School leaders present included Board of Governors chairman Vun Soon Chong, Alumni Association president Johnny Lim and Principal Kwok Chee Yen.
The event's success was powered by teachers, parent volunteers, corporate sponsors and over 100 student helpers. While the fundraising tally will be released next week, early estimates suggest strong progress toward the relocation goal.

All GRS assemblymen to defend seats — Joachim

TELUPID (Aug 3): All current state assemblymen under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will continue to represent the coalition in the upcoming 17th State Election, said Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam. He made the affirmation during the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Telupid annual general meeting recently. Dr Joachim, who is acting president of PBS, said the GRS government is capable of guaranteeing political stability in Sabah as it comprises eight local parties that prioritise the state's development. He said this stability has been a key driver of economic growth since GRS assumed leadership of the state. 'GRS must continue to govern Sabah to ensure the continuity of comprehensive economic progress,' he said. Dr Joachim also urged PBS Telupid members to unite and fully support division chief and Telupid assemblyman Datuk Jonnybone J. Kurum in retaining the seat. 'Jonnybone has been vocal in the State Assembly and is committed to the people of Telupid. It is only right that we ensure his re-election,' said Dr Joachim, who is also the Minister of Local Government and Housing. He congratulated organising chairman Marcellus Jeffrey and the PBS Telupid Division committee for the successful event, while also acknowledging PBS chief advisor Datuk Seri Panglima Michael Asang, former Labuk assemblyman, for his continued presence and contributions. 'It should be remembered that Telupid was once part of the Labuk constituency, and Datuk Seri Michael Asang played a significant role in this area,' he added. Meanwhile, Jonnybone thanked Dr Joachim for attending the event despite his tight schedule and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing for allocations to repair the Telupid Native Court building. He also welcomed upcoming legislative amendments aimed at improving the institution.

Sabah teachers face salary cuts over unfair allowance rule
Murkam KUDAT (July 31): The Sabah State Government Teachers' Union (KGKS) has appealed to the Public Service Department (JPA) and the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) to review the strict implementation of the 25-kilometer straight-line allowance claim in Sabah. In making the call, KGKS president Gundohing Murkam Hj Hussien said that implementing the 25km claim in a straight line is not appropriate in this state because of the hilly terrain and the lack of infrastructure such as roads. 'For example, teachers working at SK Penimbawan Tuaran … there are two ways to get there: by boat along the river, which takes between 10 and 15 minutes depending on weather conditions. 'The second way is to use a car and follow the road for 78km. This means that strictly enforcing the 25km requirement is not appropriate. 'After considering the views of all KGKS members through the roadshow program, the union finally agreed to appeal the issue in question,' he said. Murkam said this after gracing the KGKS Science Expedition event at the Kudat District Library Hall yesterday. He stressed that the appeal was made following complaints from several members of KGKS in Sabah whose salaries were cut or who were asked to pay in installments each month, involving amounts up to tens of thousands, due to the enforcement of the 25km straight-line claim rule. The 25-kilometer straight-line claim refers to the maximum distance allowed for travel claims, measured in a straight line (radius) on a map, from the place of residence or accommodation to the official place of duty. This means the distance considered is the shortest distance between two points, regardless of winding paths or other obstacles on the ground. In this case, these 25 kilometers are determined by a straight line on the map, not the actual distance traveled by road. Murkam stated that based on feedback received by KGKS, the members concerned appeared to be shocked receiving letters from the District Education Office (PPD) without discussion or being consulted, stating that they were immediately subject to salary reduction orders. Describing the action as an injustice, Murkam said KGKS sympathized with the plight they were facing. 'Of course, the teachers involved were affected, leading to a decrease in their enthusiasm for work … some teachers were forced to take out bank loans and sell their cars just to pay debts that were not supposed to be borne entirely by them. The procedures for claiming the Regional Housing Allowance (RHA) are through the desk officer at the District Education Office (PPD) to verify the distance of 25km. 'Only after it was approved did the clerk process it and the headmaster approve the teacher's application … anyone involved in this process should be responsible and share the cost of this claim,' he said. Therefore, as the president of KGKS, which fights for the interests of teachers serving in Sabah, Murkam urged the authorities to consider the appeal. He said KGKS also demanded that representatives from JPA and KPM go on the ground to conduct a roadshow to provide detailed explanations about the 25km straight line issue for the benefit of all parties, thus resolving the issue of teachers' salaries being cut unexpectedly.
