'People love the underdog' - Cherries fans as far as the USA

BBC Newsa day ago
Life-long Bournemouth fan David Cordell, who lives in the United States, spoke to BBC Radio Solent's Fern Buckley about the club's pre-season tour, and says it is a sign of how far the Cherries have come.Bournemouth are in the USA ahead of the Premier League Summer Series which they are competing in alongside other English top-flight sides."We have Bournemouth fans all over the country - we're not as big as Manchester United or Liverpool, obviously, because we haven't had the same success. But a lot of people choose Bournemouth because we are the underdog."We try to persuade people to join us, who don't want to support one of the big six clubs. We play in the same colours as Atlanta so we get a lot of supporters from there."To see Bournemouth becoming a regular Premier League team under a great owner is very lucky and I hope Bill [Foley] will take us to places we've never dreamed about. On growing their fanbase: "We try to do some meet and greets. We have Steve Fletcher [former Bournemouth forward] coming to meet us before the game on Saturday and the club is organising a training session for fans in Chicago. It's good fun and really nice to get to know other fans.On the pre-season tour: "It would be nice to win some silverware, but this is all about preparation for the new season. The Cherries play Everton in New Jersey on Saturday (21:00 BST), before then taking on Manchester United in Chicago on 30 July (02:30) and finally West Ham in Atlanta on 3 August (19:00).Listen to the full interview on BBC Sounds.

Morgan Gibbs-White signs new Nottingham Forest contract after Spurs transfer fury

Morgan Gibbs-White had been wanted by Tottenham earlier this summer, but Spurs' bid of £60m drew fury from Nottingham Forest who accused the London club of an illegal approach Morgan Gibbs-White has remarkably signed a new three-year contract with Nottingham Forest after being the subject of a £60million bid from Tottenham Hotspur. ‌ Spurs thought they had triggered a release clause when they bid for Gibbs-White earlier this month, only for Forest to react furiously and consider legal action over what they saw as an illegal approach. ‌ Forest felt that Spurs hadn't been granted permission to speak to the England midfielder, and felt that there had been a breach in confidentiality regarding the terms in his contract. ‌ Spurs and new boss Thomas Frank had still hoped to proceed with the signing, but on Saturday evening Forest stunned fans by announcing that Gibbs-White had signed a new three-year deal. The club said: "A central figure in Forest's Premier League resurgence and a fan favourite at the City Ground, Gibbs-White has underlined his long-term commitment to the Club by agreeing to fresh terms. "The deal underlines the ambition of Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, whose vision for European success and sustained Premier League progress continues to shape the club's future." Gibbs-White said: "I've felt at home at Forest from the moment I arrived. The support from the fans, my teammates, and everyone around the club has been unbelievable. "I believe in what we're building here – and with the backing of Mr Marinakis and the enormous ambition he has, I want to be part of making something special. I'm excited for what's to come." ‌ Forest owner Marinakis, who posed with Gibbs-White in photos celebrating the new contract, said: "Morgan is a special player – not just in terms of talent, but character and mentality. He represents everything we want this football club to be: he is a winner, talented, ambitious, fearless, and proud. 'There was significant interest from various clubs, but we were determined to build our future with Morgan at the heart of it. I promised our fans we would not only compete, but grow stronger and stronger every season. Today is another big step in that journey." Al-Ahli, the reigning AFC Champions League holders who had Premier League winner Riyad Mahrez and England striker Ivan Toney in attack, had the better of the first half. Phillies INF Edmundo Sosa injured vs. Yankees

July 26 - Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Edmundo Sosa exited Saturday's game against the host New York Yankees in the seventh inning following a scary collision with left fielder Brandon Marsh. With two outs and the Phillies holding a 9-3 lead, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a pop up to shallow left field. As Sosa backpedaled and called for the ball, Marsh charged in and appeared to hit the infielder in the back. Sosa sustained a back contusion, per the team. Sosa was checked out by a trainer for a few minutes before exiting under his own power. When his spot came up in the eighth, Sosa was replaced by Otto Kemp. Sosa, who was making his 15th start at third base, hit a two-run homer in Philadelphia's four-run seventh inning. Sosa is hitting .270 with four homers and 25 RBIs in 56 games this season. --Field Level Media
