Daniel Cormier confident that Ilia Topuria knockout loss did not deter Max Holloway
Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) was knocked out by Ilia Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in their featherweight title fight at UFC 308, marking the first time Holloway was stopped by strikes.
Now Holloway will look to rebound when he defends his BMF title against retiring Dustin Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) in a trilogy bout, which headlines Saturday's UFC 318 event (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
"Max is as good as they come, and he's motivated to hold on to that BMF championship," Cormier told MMA Junkie. "You've got to make sure you're locked in if you want to get a victory in those situations. Always. It's even more than Max knows Dustin is done. Dustin is going to walk away from fighting, and Max still has to be here. He wants to get a victory over Dustin as Dustin retires because he's got to deal with everything that MMA entails."
Prior to the Topuria loss, Holloway scored an iconic knockout of Justin Gaethje in his return to lightweight at UFC 300. This time, Holloway looked like a much more natural 155-pounder than he did when he lost to Poirier on short notice for the interim title at UFC 236.
Holloway is eyeing a rematch with newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Topuria, and Cormier sees that as enough of a motivator for "Blessed" to get back on track.
"If he's anything like the last time we saw him at 155, he's one of the best in the world," Cormier said of Holloway. "The first time he fought he was like, 'I have a spare tire, I was gaining weight just to fight.' When we saw him against Justin he had not looked like that same guy. He had looked like a 155 pounder.
"Now his diet matches everything he needs in order to become a world champ. Because that's exactly what his eyes are set on. He's not thinking, 'Just go win this fight.' You hear the stuff he's saying about Ilia. That loss did not deter him. He still wants to get back in there with Topuria and try to make that right."
Holloway took aim at Topuria's recent run, which saw him knock out Alexander Volkanovski, Holloway, and most recently Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. Cormier explains why he slightly agrees with Holloway downplaying the win streak.
"With the history, I think he's closer to getting that fight," Cormier said. "All those things he said (about Topuria's winning streak) were true. Everything he stated was fact. Problem is, Ilia still did that. You've got to give him credit for what he did.
"That was amazing to watch him do what he did over the course of those three fights and we have to really tip our cap to the champion. Max Holloway wants that fight again, and we'll have to see how long it is before he gets that opportunity."

49ers add former top 10 pick to help with CB depth after injury to starter
The San Francisco 49ers are adding some intriguing depth at cornerback after an injury to one of their starters left them shorthanded. ESPN's Adam Schefter on Sunday reported former New York Giants No. 10 overall pick Eli Apple is signing with the 49ers on a one-year contract. Apple, 29, will get an opportunity at CB with Renardo Green dealing with a hamstring injury. It's been a tumultuous nine-year career for Apple, who has been on six teams during that stretch. He spent two-and-a-half years with the Giants before joining the New Orleans Saints. He was there for a year-and-a-half, then signed with the Carolina Panthers for a year. He was with the Cincinnati Bengals for two seasons and then with the Miami Dolphins in 2023, and the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024. Apple has played in only 14 games with four starts over the last two years. He has 10 pass breakups, one interception and 48 tackles in that stretch. For his career the former first-rounder has six interceptions and 61 pass breakups in 102 games (82 starts). According to Pro Football Focus he has allowed 32 touchdowns and allows a quarterback rating of 100.4 when targeted. He'll now join a cornerback group that has a ton of uncertainty. Green isn't expected to miss a ton of time. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said he anticipates he'll be back for the second week of the preseason in mid-August, but the 49ers need more CBs to take some practice reps. However, given the murkiness on the depth chart, there's a real chance Apple could play his way into the conversation for a roster spot if he steps into a young CB room and performs in camp and the preseason. Stephen Thompson responds to Muslim Salikhov's 'old guys' callout at UFC on ABC 9
Stephen Thompson is down for a matchup of the oldest active fighters in the welterweight division after being called out at UFC on ABC 9. Following a 42-second upset knockout of Carlos Leal on Saturday's card in Abu Dhabi, Muslim Salikhov called for a showdown against Thompson (17-9-1 MMA, 12-9-1 UFC) in what would be a pairing of two of the division's most decorated strikers. It didn't take long for the 42-year-old "Wonderboy" to respond to the callout from 41-year-old Salikhov (22-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC), and he seemingly obliged immediately (via X): Thompson is coming off a controversial split decision loss to Gabriel Bonfim at UFC on ESPN 70 this month in what was the second-to-last fight on his current UFC contract. Although Thompson admitted in a pre-fight interview with MMA Junkie that he's unsure if he'll be signed to a new deal, a clash with a fighter of similar age and style would be fitting matchmaking.

Ex-Steelers QB Kenny Pickett injured at Browns training camp
Browns QB Kenny Pickett injured his hamstring near the end of Saturday's practice and is expected to re-evaluate the injury later this week, per sources. Pickett was coming off a strong couple of practices, per sources, and at least for the short term, there now will be more reps… Former Steelers QB Kenny Pickett has suffered an unfortunate hamstring injury at Browns training camp — opening the door for the starting competition to get additional reps. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pickett suffered his hamstring injury at the end of Saturday's practice — and is set to be re-evaluated later this week. The Steelers traded Pickett to the Eagles last offseason — who then sent him to the Browns, where he's involved in a four-way competition for the starting QB position in Cleveland. Pickett was splitting reps with QBs Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders for the Browns' starting spot — and despite a strong early showing at camp, the ex-Steeler will likely fight an uphill battle for the job while nursing his hamstring. Here's to hoping the former first-rounder can return quickly and earn the role for Cleveland — as the Week 6 revenge game, when the Browns visit Pittsburgh, hinges on Pickett under center.
