An off-duty NYPD officer, identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, was among four people killed in a mass shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening.
Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and a four-year veteran of the police force, was hailed as a hero by city officials.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams remembered Officer Islam as a devoted public servant and family man. 'We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence, including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam,' he said at a press conference. 'He was saving lives, he was protecting New Yorkers… He loved this city, and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person who believed in God.'

Islam is survived by his wife—eight months pregnant—and two sons. Mayor Adams said he met with the grieving family and told them: 'He was a hero, and we admire him for putting his life on the line.'

Fear drives a 1,400-km ride, Malda bros back home from Ggn in autos

1 2 Malda: Israil and Ashraful had driven their autorickshaws in Gurgaon for years. They never could have imagined that those 3-wheelers would ever have even a 100-km-long run. However, times are such that things so outlandish are turning into stark reality. On Monday, the brothers reached their Malda homes in their autos, driving 1,400 km over two-and-a-half days. The reason? The mortal fear associated with being a migrant Bengali-speaking worker in Haryana. It was 16 years ago that Israil Mia and Ashraful left Gazole in search of work. They tried their hands at different odd jobs in Gurgaon, saved money and then bought two autos. Their wives worked as domestic helps in Gurgaon's Sector 49. Israil's 9-year-old son also lived with them. However, things changed about a fortnight back. A relative, suspected of being an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant, was detained by police. However, even though cops released him two days later, trouble started for the two brothers. "The landlord had already given us notice to vacate the room. We have Aadhaar card and EPIC but were still afraid that police would pick us up. In such uncertainty, we decided to leave Gurgaon. But we couldn't leave our autos behind. That's when we decided to drive back home in autos," said Israil. Their families and some essentials packed into the autos, the two brothers left Gurgaon on Aug 1. The journey, however, wasn't bereft of uncertainty. At each police checkpoint on the highway, they feared for the worst. While driving through UP, the brothers even had to bribe some cops so that they could pass. "We were scared and hardly took any rest on the road," said Ashraful. Finally, at South Dinajpur's Buniadpur, traffic cops guided them to the way home. There, district administration reached out to them. DM Nitin Singhania said, "We will help them in all possible ways." Now, safe at last, the brothers are worried about their future. They want to return to Gurgaon for work but said they would wait until the police harassment ends.

7 held for attack on Suvendu's convoy in Cooch Behar

1 2 Kolkata/Jalpaiguri: Seven people were arrested by Cooch Behar Police on Wednesday in connection with the attack on the convoy of Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Sources said the arrested included TMC workers and Trinamool Yuva functionaries. The arrested were remanded to five days' judicial custody. Meanwhile, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya moved a notice in Rajya Sabha under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of State (Rajya Sabha), seeking a discussion on the attack, which he described as "an attack on democracy". Adhikari's convoy came under attack in Cooch Behar on Tuesday, when he arrived to attend a protest rally and submit a memorandum to the SP regarding alleged assaults on BJP workers. As the convoy reached Khagrabari, a group of alleged TMC supporters attacked the convoy. In his complaint, Adhikari named 41 persons, including state minister, Udayan Guha. "We are not going to leave them. If Udayan Guha was directly involved in the incident, the police's role cannot be ruled out," Adhikari said at a meeting on Wednesday. "Not a single Rohingya or Bangladeshi Muslim was named in complaint or arrested. His comments were baseless and he should apologise. Those who disrespect Bengalis and the Bengali language will be shown black flags," Guha said.
