Mets hero and two-time World Series winner Ron Taylor dies at 87

Daily Mail17-06-2025
New York Mets hero and two-time World Series champion Ron Taylor passed away on Monday at age 87 in Toronto after a lengthy illness, the team announced.
Taylor made his Major League Baseball debut with the Cleveland Indians in 1962 before joining the St. Louis Cardinals the next year.
It was with the Cardinals in 1964 that he won his first World Series. Yet, Taylor was best known for his time with the Mets.
Taylor played for the Mets from 1967 through 1971, including his infamous run in 1969, which helped the Queens franchise win the World Series.
In 1969, Taylor led the Mets with 59 appearances and had 13 saves. He had a 9–4 record and a 2.72 earned-run average.
'Ron was the only guy on our staff with postseason experience,' said former Met Art Shamsky via news release. 'He had won a championship with the Cardinals in 1964 and brought a winning mentality. We don't win the title without Ron Taylor.'
Taylor ended his playing career in 1972 after the Mets sold his contract to the Montreal Expos, who did not use him in a game.
He made his final few appearances for the San Diego Padres before retiring for good.
Taylor was on the Toronto Blue Jays medical staff from 1977 until his retirement in 2014.
On staff with the Blue Jays, albeit not in the dugout, Toronto won the 1992 and 1993 World Series titles.

New Orleans Saints cause outrage as they hire more male NFL cheerleaders for new season

NFL fans have voiced their outrage after discovering that the New Orleans Saints have hired more male cheerleaders ahead the upcoming season. The franchise confirmed that there will be a total of 13 men on the 2025 Saints Cheer Krewe Roster after three women were replaced following tryouts. The Saints will be one of 12 NFL teams that feature male cheerleaders on their dance squad - compared to just seven teams in 2024 - along with the likes of the Minnesota Vikings, who also confirmed they will have two male cheerleaders this year. Male cheerleaders have been present in the NFL since 2018 but with their growing prominence in the league, some fans have began to take issue with it. Taking to X to respond to a post regarding the Saints' decision, one fan wrote: 'Yet another reason why I stopped watching the nfl'. Another said: 'Which 20 don't have any? Time for a new team.' On a similar note, another fan said: 'I have never been so triggered in my life'. Fans voiced their frustration with the growing trend among cheer squads in the league In a rather dramatic take, one user said: 'Absolutely disgraceful this world gets worse and worse'. This season, the Saints, Panthers, Buccaneers, Chiefs, Colts, Titans, Patriots, 49ers, Eagles, Rams, Ravens and Vikings will all feature male cheerleaders in their squad. The Vikings in particular have faced similar backlash after footage of two of their new male cheerleaders went viral in the past week. Male cheerleaders have been part of the NFL since 2018 - with the Saints' own Jesse Hernandez being one of the first to pioneer the change in the league. Hernandez stepped out as the first male member of the Saints' cheer squad in their history for a preseason game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome seven years ago. Sporting black skinny jeans, white jersey and sneakers, Hernandez was in the center of the formation, lining up with the rest of his squad performing classic Rockette-style high kicks and spins. Along with Hernandez, the Los Angeles Rams also introduced Napoleon Jinnies and Quinton Peron into their cheer squad during the same season. Since then, teams have welcomed the addition of male cheerleaders into their dance squad. It's fairly common for college cheer squads to be co-ed.

Venus Williams receives US Open wildcard

NEW YORK, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Two-time U.S. Open singles champion Venus Williams has received a wildcard entry into this year's tournament, organisers said on Wednesday, as the 45-year-old American continues her age-defying return to the court. Williams became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat Peyton Stearns at last month's Washington Open after a 16-month absence from competitive tennis. She last played in the U.S. Open singles main draw in 2023, losing in the first round to Belgian Greet Minnen. The seven-time Grand Slam winner is also playing in the tournament's new-look mixed doubles tournament with compatriot Reilly Opelka. Other women's singles wildcards included France's Caroline Garcia, in what will likely be the 2022 semi-finalist's last appearance at Flushing Meadows. The 2022 WTA Finals winner announced plans to retire from the sport earlier this year.

College given unprecedented and 'game changing' $300m gift to improve its sports teams

In what appears to be one of the largest gifts in the history of college athletics, Kansas has received a 'game changing' $300million donation from wealthy donor David Booth. Booth, who has a reported net worth of $2.9billion, is the founder of Dimensional Fund Advisors and already has the Jayhawks' football stadium named after him. The Jayhawks athletics department plans use use $75millon of the gift to continue renovations of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and construction of the nearby Gateway District, per ESPN. The other $225million will establish an additional revenue stream for the university. 'I'd say it's transformative and a game changer,' Kansas athletic director Travis Goff told ESPN. 'This gift makes an immediate impact on our top priority in a profound way, and it also provides us with an incredible revenue stream that gives us a chance to really invest in unique ways in the future of Kansas athletics.' Current renovations at the stadium, on southwest, west, and north sides of the venue started in 2023 and are slated to be finished by Kansas' home opener against Fresno State next weekend. The renovations from Booth's latest gift will begin after the 2025 Jayhawks' football season concludes. From 2009 through 2022, Kansas football did not have one season with a winning record, with 2023' s 9-4 breakthrough being the catalyst for gridiron upgrades at the school. Although Kansas reverted to a 5-7 record last year, the financial momentum to have the school compete with the best in college football is now in place. The gift comes less than a month before Kansas reignites the Border Showdown against its greatest rival, Missouri, with the teams facing for the first time since 2011 next month. The Tigers have made several improvements to their home football stadium to catch up to Southeastern Conference rivals, and much outpaced Kansas with the updates to the south and north end zones. The first matchup between the schools will be in Missouri, with 2026's rematch at Booth Stadium, where plenty of renovations will take place between now and then. 'One of life's greatest privileges is being able to give back to the people and places that gave so much to you,' Booth said in a school statement. "KU and Lawrence are a big part of my story, and it means a lot to support the community that invested in me'
