'Superman' actors who played queer characters in movies and TV shows
Superman, released in theaters on Friday, July 11, is breathing new life not only into a character that had been struggling to resonate with the general public for quite a few years on the big screen — but this new film is also the official launch of the brand-new DC Universe, otherwise referred to as the DCU.
If you need a reminder: The previous franchise of interconnected films based on DC comic books was called DCEU (DC Extended Universe) and included Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. That continuity is, now more officially than ever, completely dead.
After a string of hits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the Guardians of the Galaxy films, filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran are now leading DC Studios and starting things from the ground up — a clean slate dubbed as DCU.
2025's Superman features several exciting characters being played by very talented actors. So whether you're curious to learn more about these actors you've never seen before, or want to remember where they might've caught your attention for playing a queer character, we're excited to help.

(L) Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl in Superman; (R) Isabela Merced as Dina on The Last of Us.
Isabela Merced, who plays Hawkgirl in this new Superman film, is a rising Hollywood actress who became an even bigger name in 2025 following her performance as Dina on The Last of Us season 2. On the HBO series, Dina is more than just a love interest for Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) — she's a character that stands on her own, and also happens to be a loyal partner to Ellie at a time when she needs it the most.
On that note, it's worth noting that Merced identifies as queer in real life — not just her character on The Last of Us. "I've been queer my whole life, so I never really thought about it," Merced told The New York Times in April. "But I remember playing the game and seeing the scene in the dance and thinking, 'That's so cool.'"

(L) David Corenswet as Clark Kent in Superman; (R) David Corenswet as River Barkley on The Politician.
David Corenswet starred in the first season of Ryan Murphy's The Politician as River Barkley — a wealthy, popular, and troubled character who had a love affair with his school mate, Payton Hobart (played Ben Platt).
In front of everyone else, River had a longtime girlfriend and considered Payton as a rival for his political aspirations. Between just the two of them, however, River and Payton actually had a romantic connection and a deeper relationship than what other could see.
River had a tragic death in season 1 and only appeared as a recurring character in season 2. But, given how queer-inclusive The Politician was, Corenswet stood out to gay audiences for playing that character. Now, that actor is none other than Clark Kent himself.

(L) Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in Superman; (R) Rachel Brosnahan as Rachel Posner on House of Cards.
While viewers may recognize Rachel Brosnahan for her performance as the titular character on Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the actress — who plays Lois Lane in this Superman movie — has a long list of acting credits… Some of which are queer!
For instance, Brosnahan starred as the iconic Rachel Posner on House of Cards: A sex worker who used Doug Stamper (played by Michael Kelly) for money but identified as a queer woman. Overall, Brosnahan appeared in the first three seasons of the Netflix series.

(L) Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in Superman; (R) Rachel Brosnahan as Abby Isaacs on Manhattan.
As Abby Isaacs on WGN America's Manhattan, Brosnahan delivered another great performance of a queer character. Set in the 1940s, there was certainly a bigger focus on that character for just being the wife of Dr. Charlie Isaacs (played by Ashley Zukerman).
And yet, viewers fell in love with Abby as a result of Brosnahan's nuanced and lived-in performance.

(L) Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in Superman; (R) Nicholas Hoult as Tony Stonem on Skins.
Now that's what we call a "twink death."
From starring on the original, British version of Skins as a bisexual character named Tony Stonem to now embodying one of the most iconic super-villains of all time — Lex Luthor — in Superman, Nicholas Hoult continues to understand the assignment, no matter what project he's attached to.

HOYTS Cinemas and IMAX Relaunch Partnership with Up to Five New IMAX With Laser Locations Across Australia
SYDNEY & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) and HOYTS Cinemas, one of Australia's leading cinema chains, today announced a new agreement for up to five state-of-the-art IMAX® with Laser systems throughout Australia. The deal reignites the partnership between the two companies, which have not operated an IMAX location together since 2019. The first new IMAX location is slated to open in Melbourne later in 2025, in advance of the release of 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. Up to an additional four locations will be identified for future expansion. 'As the pioneer of IMAX screens in multiplex cinema in Australia, HOYTS is delighted to partner with IMAX again. Our foundation site at Melbourne Central will be open for 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' with more sites to be announced shortly,' said Damien Keogh, CEO and President of HOYTS Group. 'Every one of our cinemas has touch points that elevate them from a usual experience: from the quality of our recliners, through to state-of-the-art technical enhancements. The opportunity to see things on IMAX is really going to enhance HOYTS' reputation as the premier destination for film experiences.' 'Australia continues to be a priority for IMAX, and this agreement with HOYTS Cinemas to expand and diversify our footprint is just the latest sign of our strong momentum in this thriving moviegoing market,' said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. 'HOYTS is an exceptional, well-established exhibitor in Australia and New Zealand, and we're looking forward to getting back in business with the company to further satisfy surging demand for the IMAX Experience.' IMAX has seen unprecedented growth in Australia, driven by strong box office performance and exceptional moviegoer demand. The company's footprint in Australia has grown from just one location in 2022 to four currently in operation and another ten set to open in the next several years. Australia currently ranks as the tenth market overall for IMAX box office — a stellar result from just four locations in the country and ranking behind powerhouse IMAX markets like the U.S., China, Japan and the UK. Last year, IMAX notched its highest grossing year since 2015 in Australia, and the country was the top market overall by per-screen-average (PSA) for IMAX, with an average of nearly $4.5 million per screen. The deal comes as IMAX continues a hot streak of Filmed for IMAX titles – in Australia, IMAX delivered nearly 6% of last weekend's debut of 'Superman,' despite only having four locations in the country. Earlier this summer, 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' was among the top opening weekends ever for IMAX in Australia, delivering over $400K in box office. Overall, IMAX indexing in Australia has grown dramatically, going from 2.6% of the overall box office in 2024 to 4.4% in 2025 to date, with several Filmed for IMAX titles to go including next week's debut of Disney/Marvel's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' The new HOYTS IMAX locations will be equipped with IMAX with Laser, IMAX's most advanced cinema experience. Developed from the ground up for maximum immersion, IMAX with Laser delivers crystal-clear 4K images, precision audio, and state-of-the-art projection technology, setting a new standard for moviegoing. The system features a groundbreaking optical engine, custom-designed lenses, and proprietary IMAX technology that delivers brighter images, deeper contrast, and the widest range of colors exclusively to IMAX screens. About HOYTS Since opening the doors of its first cinema in 1909, HOYTS has gone on to become one of the world's leading entertainment companies, with more than 500 screens and over 60,000 seats across the network. ‘Superman' Can't Save Hollywood From Superhero Fatigue
James Gunn's much-discussed reboot of Superman is a hit, rustling up $125 million domestically and another $95 million from 79 international markets, but the coverage of its success isn't merely that of a blockbuster. ''Superman' Saves the Day for DC Studios,' announced the Hollywood Reporter, while a New York Times headline noted, 'With $217 Million in Ticket Sales, 'Superman' Helps Save Warner Bros., Too.' In a high-profile relaunch with such oversized stakes, it's tempting to latch on to a 'Superman saves the day' narrative. Perhaps, in light of these record-breaking returns, not only Warner Bros. Discovery and DC but the comic book movie itself has been brought back from the precipice of death. Hollywood executives would be wise to temper their excitement about the subgenre, though, because the truth is a bit more complicated.

Bonded Pair of 15-Year-Old Shelter Dogs Desperate To Be Adopted Together
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Two 15-year-old dog siblings have melted hearts across the internet, as their shelter hopes to find them a forever home—ideally, together. Oliver and Savannah were placed in the care of Frosted Faces Foundation, a California-based nonprofit that specializes in senior dog rescue, in March after their owner passed away. A heartwarming TikTok video of the elderly pups sleeping side-by-side, shared by @peakepups, has racked up over 33,200 likes and more than 178,300 views on the platform. "Over the past three-plus months, while on-site and in a foster home, we've gotten to know them very well; their sweet personalities, resilience, and all the ways they are different," Kelly Smíšek, from the Frosted Faces Foundation, told Newsweek. "While we would love to see Oliver and Savannah find a forever home together, what matters most is that they spend their remaining years as cherished family members," Smíšek added. @peakepups Oliver Joe and Savannah Joe are 15 years old and available for adoption through @frostedfaces in Ramona, California. They have a $0 adoption fee and cover medical for life at their on-site vet. Their adoption application is linked in our bio. ♬ The Winner Is... - DeVotchKa Version - DeVotchKa Smíšek described Oliver as a happy and affectionate dog who still behaves much younger than his age. He enjoys morning greetings, car rides, and even stand-up paddleboarding. Back scratches are a particular favorite. Oliver is spending time with a temporary foster family as part of Frosted Faces' "Frosted Fling" program, while Savannah has returned to her previous foster home. Both are said to be thriving in their respective placements. Oliver's temporary caregiver shared further insights into his personality, noting: "Oliver is a gentle, easygoing pup who gets along wonderfully with dogs, cats, and people alike. At 15, he's still full of youthful energy and spirit—his cheerful, bouncy gait makes every walk feel like an adventure," she said. Oliver is full-potty trained and while not a lapdog, loves affection and pets. "Oliver is truly a sweet soul with a warm heart—wise beyond his years but still young at heart," she added. A split image showing the senior dogs, Oliver and Savannah, up for adoption A split image showing the senior dogs, Oliver and Savannah, up for adoption Frosted Faces Foundation/Frosted Faces Foundation Savannah, meanwhile, is described as a quiet and gentle soul who, despite being both blind and deaf, is incredibly adaptable. She loves to rearrange the room, by scooting her bed across the floor until it is the way she likes it. The pup is also a great car passenger. "Savannah is a quiet, sweet, super mellow girl. Although, she is blind and deaf, she had no trouble mapping my home and yard," her foster carer said. "Savannah comes up often to boop my leg for pets or to get picked up. She loves to be held, especially cradled like a baby, and she sleeps through the night in my bed," her foster carer added. The Frosted Faces Foundation offers lifelong veterinary care coverage for the dogs, and there is no adoption fee—just a commitment to provide them a loving home. Bonded pairs such as Oliver and Savannah can be more challenging to place, but the emotional rewards are significant. Rescue in Style says that bonded pairs often offer built-in companionship; reduce anxiety for each other; and help new adopters adjust more quickly. While some may worry about double the responsibility, many find that the bond between the animals creates a more-harmonious household dynamic. There are also distinct benefits to adopting senior dogs. As pet-food manufacturer Purina highlights, older dogs are typically calmer, require less-intensive exercise, and are often already trained. Their personalities are fully formed, making it easier for adopters to find a good match. Perhaps most importantly, giving an older dog a loving home in their twilight years is one of the most-rewarding experiences for a pet owner. The video has struck a chord with TikTok viewers, many of whom shared their hopes for the siblings' future. "My sweet senior dog just passed, I would love to give these guys the best in their final years. Do you allow out of state adoptions? I can come see and meet them, I am in Vegas," posted one user. "Someone pls [please] help them and keep them together. Their owner died and it's tough for them … my heart is broken for them! Hope they live out the rest of their lives together in happiness," commented another. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
