Blue Jays trade for O's RHP Seranthony Dominguez

Reuters7 days ago
July 29 - In between Games 1 and 2 of the teams' doubleheader in Baltimore on Tuesday, the Toronto Blue Jays acquired right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez and cash considerations from the Orioles.
The Orioles received right-handed pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown to complete the trade.
Dominguez, 30, last pitched Sunday, when the Orioles defeated the visiting Colorado Rockies 5-1. He did not appear in the first game of Tuesday's twin bill, a 16-4 Baltimore rout of Toronto.
The Blue Jays are in first place in the American League East and made the deal with their division rival for an experienced bullpen arm.
In 298 career games with the Philadelphia Phillies (2018-24) and Orioles (2024-25), Dominguez has gone 21-22 with 40 saves, a 3.54 ERA and 335 strikeouts across 285 innings. He did not play in 2020 due to injury.
In 2025, Dominguez has gone 2-3 with two saves and a 3.24 ERA in 43 appearances for the Orioles. He's struck out 54 batters for a rate of 11.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
Watts-Brown, 23, has split this season between Double-A New Hampshire and High-A Vancouver. He has gone 2-5 with a 3.54 ERA in 19 starts. MLB Pipeline ranked Watts-Brown as Toronto's No. 10 prospect.

Scott Brown says Ayr will heed Championship warning and sets sights on home comforts

The manager is looking for his Ayr side to set the right tone when Raith visit town this Saturday. Scott Brown insists Ayr can heed their Championship warning with a quick return to form. ‌ United made a slow start at Arbroath on Friday night, in which they laboured for much of the league curtain raiser. ‌ Brown admits Ayr will need to up their game dramatically to be at the sharp end this season - but says the opening day draw has focused minds on what's required. ‌ He told the Ayrshire Post: 'We know how difficult this league can be from one week to the next. Friday night just proved that. 'The thing that frustrated me the most was how we fell into the trap of going long to our two strikers all night. 'We needed to show more composure on the ball and I hoped that getting the early goal would have allowed us to kick on.' ‌ Ayr have a chance to set the tone on home soil when they welcome Raith this Saturday. United were strong at Somerset last season and Brown wants more of the same this time. He said: 'We'll look to use the surface to our advantage and get it down and play. We've got good footballers in the team and we need to make the most of them.' Meanwhile, Brown has acknowledged the ongoing miss that is skipper Ben Dempsey, who has been sidelined since the end of last season with a knee injury. ‌ United's influential captain has seen a specialist in a bid to cure the problem and will not be rushed back as he bids to return. Brown said: "Ben is the captain of the club and a massive player for us. So not having him around is a blow. He sets the tempo for everyone and was tremendous for us last season. 'The priority has been getting him back in with us and we're building him up from there. We're starting to see progress on that now." ‌ Kevin Holt underwent a small operation on his groin last week but is not expected to miss much game time. Stuart Bannigan is back in training following an interrupted pre-season, with Brown keen to see what he adds to the squad. The boss said: 'It's been frustrating for Banzo as he's had a couple of niggles and missed a lot of the work. So that's put him behind. 'But when he does come back in he'll add that bit of experience in there.' Anton Dowds is continuing his long road back from injury but United won't rush the striker, who ruptured his ACL last September. United want to add a defender from Celtic as part of the co-op deal rubber stamped last week. Kyle Ure and Jude Bonnar have already made the move from Parkhead.

SPFL club chairman launches shock blast at OWN fans as he brands scenes at weekend ‘nothing short of a disgrace'

The club chief has branded scenes surrounding a fans' protest on Saturday as 'nothing short of disgraceful.' Accies were slapped with a 15-point deduction in April in relation to multiple SPFL rule breaches. That deduction effectively relegated the club, who finished bottom of the Championship and were consigned to League One football for this season. And less than two weeks ago, the club was hit with a transfer embargo that is due to last until the end of the season. Nonetheless, manager John Rankin was able to add three new players to the squad on the eve of the league kick-off at the weekend there. A cash row between the club's current hierarchy and the owners of New Douglas Park saw Hamilton dramatically LEAVE their home stadium. Upon announcing that shock move in early May, the club revealed they were planning on building a new stadium in the area. They also agreed a deal to play their home matches at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld. It's been a tricky time for Accies fans and a group of them decided to make their feelings known ahead of their opening League One fixture at the weekend. Around a 100 fans, including the Accies Supporters Association chief, protested before the match against Montrose. Players are running the Rangers dressing room - Martin knows EXACTLY what he's doing The stadium move was at the forefront of the fans' anger, with a banner placed outside the ground and T-shirts being worn reading "Hamilton for Accies." The group of fans also chanted for the exits of Hamilton owner Seref Zengin and director of football Gerry Strain. Red smoke bombs were also set off outside Broadwood. Two days on, Hamilton chief Jock Brown has released a furious statement in relation to the protests. He alleges that members of the group 'verbally abused decent supporters' and that police intervention ended up being required. Brown labelled the scenes on Saturday 'nothing short of a disgrace.' The chief also revealed the club are now taking steps to "ban the ringleaders of that shocking behaviour from all our matches." In a statement released to the club website, Brown said: "Our opening league match of the season on Saturday was blighted seriously by people who have the audacity to call themselves Accies supporters. "A 'protest' took place at Broadwood which necessitated police intervention and heaped shame on the perpetrators who verbally abused decent supporters collecting their tickets – including our oldest season ticket holder and a teenage boy, a minor, who were subjected to disgusting foul and abusive language. "I have always supported peaceful protest, so long as it shows complete respect to innocent members of the public. "What happened on Saturday was nothing short of a disgrace. "Not only were our decent supporters abused, but members of North Lanarkshire Council and club staff carrying out their match day duties. "That is all completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. "We are taking steps now to ban the ringleaders of that shocking behaviour from all our matches indefinitely. "We are well aware that Accies fans did not want to move away from Hamilton. "Neither did any member of the board. But we have already explained why staying at New Douglas Park was impossible. "No other location in Hamilton was suitable so the temporary move to Broadwood was necessary. "We have a two-year lease with an option for a further year. During that time we shall do everything possible to identify and develop a new site in Hamilton. "Meanwhile, we trust that all good Accies supporters will share the board's dismay and anger at the appalling behaviour on Saturday." SunSport has contacted Police Scotland for comment. On the pitch, Hamilton won the match 2-0 thanks to goals from Oli Shaw and Charlie Telfer, the latter of whom was playing as a trialist. Hamilton travel to take on Queen of the South in their next match on Saturday afternoon. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Zverev fights back to oust defending champion Popyrin from Canadian Open

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Alexander Zverev rallied from a set down to beat defending champion Alexei Popyrin 6-7(8) 6-4 6-3 in Toronto and move into the semi-finals of the Canadian Open on Monday. Top seed Zverev was unable to convert two set points in a tight first set, but built up 3-0 leads in both the second and third sets to clinch the win in two hours and 42 minutes. The victory took the German's head-to-head record against Australian Popyrin to 4-0 and sent him to his 75th semi-final on the ATP Tour, joining Novak Djokovic as the only active men's tennis player to have reached the mark. "I had to tell myself, even though I lost the first set, I thought we were both playing actually quite well," said Zverev, who won the Canadian Open in 2017. "I had to find a return position in the beginning because he's a very big server, and when he gets into a rhythm, it's very difficult against him. "I did that in the second and third set. Honestly, I can't complain about much. I played one loose game on my serve in the second set, but apart from that, it was pretty good." Zverev next faces Russian Karen Khachanov, who beat Alex Michelsen of the United States 6-4 7-6(3). Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko stormed into the semi-finals of the women's tournament in Montreal with a 6-4 6-2 win over Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro to continue her fairytale run. The 18-year-old, ranked 85th in the world, found herself a break down early in the second set, but won six straight games to become the first Canadian to reach the semi-finals of the Canadian Open since 2019. "I'm so excited to be in the semi-final here. I want to thank everyone for your support once again. It has been unreal," said Mboko, who beat No. 1 seed Coco Gauff on Saturday and is set to enter the top 50. Mboko next takes on Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, who was leading 6-1 2-1 when her opponent, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, was forced to retire from their quarter-final match due to a wrist injury. Rybakina will meet Mboko for the second time in as many weeks, with the ninth-seeded Kazakh winning 6-3 7-5 when the pair faced off in the Washington Open last month.
