Installing LED street lights halts in Tvm KSEB division

Time of India02-05-2025

Thiruvananthapuram: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy moved through city roads, especially Vellayambalam-Kowdiar road on Thursday night, malfunctioning street lights cast a shadow on city corporation's delayed LED installation drive.
Corporation has been dragging its feet on the city-wide LED street light installation project in the state capital, drawing criticism from residents and opposition councillors. The installation process came to a standstill in KSEB's Thiruvananthapuram division for the past few months. While Neyyattinkara division completed the installation, work in Thiruvananthapuram and Kazhakkoottam divisions remains significantly behind schedule. LED lights are being installed in 58 wards of Thiruvananthapuram division, 32 wards in Kazhakkoottam division and 10 wards in Neyyattinkara division.
Residents in affected areas expressed frustration over the delay. "In our colony near Sreekaryam, half the street lights are either broken or still old sodium vapour bulbs. We were promised LED replacements last year," said R Suresh, a resident of Kazhakkoottam.
Opposition BJP members raised the issue in the corporation council meeting on Tuesday. They accused the ruling front of inefficiency and poor project management. Opposition leader and BJP councillor MR Gopan said that the LED streetlight installation project was a complete failure. "BJP voted against this project when the proposal came on the agenda in the council meeting a year ago. It is impractical for a company to maintain street lights for 10 years, as the contract period is 10 years. Currently, the wards in Thiruvananthapuram and Kazhakootam KSEB divisions are in the dark. However, we will start a protest against this," he said.

Meanwhile, works standing committee of the city corporation decided to terminate the contract with AR Constructions due to the delay. They decided to float new tenders, appointing two contractors.
According to Medayil Vikraman, works standing committee chairman, the contractor subcontracted the work to KSEB contractors owing to shortage of labourers in the company. "Since the work was outsourced to the KSEB contractors, they demanded money to replace faulty ones. As per the contract, money can be given to the contractor only after completely replacing old lights with new LED lights. In the other two divisions, we handed over the money as they completed the work successfully. However, in Kazhakkoottam division, new light installation is yet to begin, and it will start soon," he said.
The corporation had given the contractor of Thiruvananthapuram division until Wednesday to complete the replacement and installation of new LED lights. However, sources said that the works haven't been completed.

Pawan Kalyan reaches Madurai to attend Murugan Devotees' conference as chief guest

Deputy Chief Minister and JSP chief K. Pawan Kalyan arrived in Madurai on Sunday (June 22) to participate in the Muruga Bhaktargal Maanaadu (Conference of Murugan Devotees), marking a significant cultural and political moment in the southern region. Mr. Pawan Kalyan received a grand welcome at the Madurai airport from senior BJP Tamil Nadu leaders, including State president Nainar Nagendran, party observer Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy and other prominent functionaries. His visit underscores growing collaboration between BJP and JSP, especially as both parties work to strengthen their base across southern India. Mr. Pawan Kalyan will offer prayers at the historic Tirupparankundram Subramanya Swamy Temple, one of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan. Following the darshan, he will take part in the Murugan devotees' conference as the chief guest, addressing spiritual leaders, devotees and attendees from across Tamil Nadu and beyond. Among those who welcomed Pawan Kalyan were BJP State vice-president Chakravarthy, State leader Amar Prasad Reddy, BJP Madurai district president Mari Chakravarthy, State general secretary Ram Srinivasan and veteran leader Radhakrishnan, according to a press release. The event holds political significance, with Mr. Pawan Kalyan's participation seen as a gesture of cultural outreach and solidarity with Tamil spiritual traditions. Political analysts view the visit as part of a broader strategy to enhance the BJP-JSP alliance's presence in Tamil Nadu, where cultural reverence and political messaging often go hand in hand.

Congress govt. shielding KCR family on KLIP row: Bandi Sanjay Kumar

Alleging massive corruption in Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) under the previous BRS government led by KCR, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar hit back at the ruling Congress dispensation accusing it of being a shield for KCR family. 'Some people are spreading false propaganda that the BJP has changed its stance on Kaleshwaram and colluded with BRS. Our party's stand on the Kaleshwaram project is very clear, and our demand is for a CBI inquiry into the Kaleshwaram project,' Mr. Sanjay told the media in Karimnagar on Sunday. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself said that the Kaleshwaram Project became an ATM for KCR's family. That is BJP's stand too. If any party leader speaks against the BJP's stand, it's wrong. The high command will deal with them,' he said in reply to a query. Has Congress leader Rahul Gandhi forgotten his earlier demand for a CBI probe into the Kaleshwaram fiasco during the last Assembly elections? he asked. 'We don't trust the Congress government's current investigation into Kaleshwaram project. Our main demand remains a CBI inquiry,' he added. Citing the copies of the Central Water Commission (CWC) report, he said the CWC reported that Tummidihatti has water availability of 165 tmc ft based on the scientific assessment of the data from the past 33 years (1986 to 2013). 'But those at the highest echelons of power in the previous BRS government altered the design and looted public money by inflating the ₹38,000 crore project to ₹1.2 lakh crore,' he charged. 'The project failed to bring any tangible results.' If BRS claims that the Kaleshwaram project was built with Cabinet approval and sub-committee recommendations, why aren't they making those documents public? Mr. Sanjay asked. Taking a dig at KCR, he said that Mr. Rao, who called himself a top engineer, alone made all decisions including on Kaleshwaram during his tenure as Chief Minister. Stating that the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) is a statutory body, the Union Minister said the BJP's view is that any future action on the Kaleshwaram project must be guided by the expert committee report.

'Decisive leadership': Nikki Haley, Mike Pence approve of Trump's 'Operation Midnight Hammer' on Iran

Nikki Haley and Mike Pence praised Trump's decision to attack Iran. Republicans who moved away from Donald Trump , including his vice president during his first term, Mike Pence , endorsed his attack on Iran, which was codenamed 'Operation Midnight Hammer'. Even Nikki Haley , the former US ambassador to the UN, and the Republican leader who did not endorse Trump ahead of the 2024 election, praised Trump's action against Iran -- while the Make America Great Again group remained split over Trump's decision to attack Iran. "Well done," Nikki Haley wrote to the president's announcement of completing a successful attack in Fordown, Nantanz and Esfahan in Iran. — NikkiHaley (@NikkiHaley) Mike Pence said Trump made the "right call" to deploy American forces to strike Iran's nuclear sits and he should be commended for his decision leadership. "Iran could never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. Thanks to the resolve of our Commander in Chief and the courage and professionalism of our Armed Forces, America, Israel and the Free World are safer as a result. Iran should now stand down and abandon any thought of retaliation against Americans or be prepared to face the consequences. Tonight President @realDonaldTrump proved again that the United States of America is the Leader of the Free World and America Stands with Israel. Thank You Mr. President and God Bless Our Troops," Mike Pence posted. 'This is not Constitutional' Rep Thomas Massie (R-KY), who repeatedly urged Trump to avoid getting dragged into the Israel-Iran war, said the president's bypassing the congressional authority to launch such military strikes was not Constitutional. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo Republican leader Marjorie Taylor Greene said the Israel-Iran war was not a US fight. "Every time America is on the verge of greatness, we get involved in another foreign war. There would not be bombs falling on the people of Israel if Netanyahu had not dropped bombs on the people of Iran first. Israel is a nuclear-armed nation. This is not our fight. Peace is the answer," MTG wrote. Trump's former adviser Steve Bannon, who played a crucial role in Trump's Iran decision, was appalled by Trump's post-strike thanking of Netanyahu. Bannon said Netanyahu is the last guy to thank.
