Ski jumping-Norwegian ski jumpers suspended amid equipment investigation

Reuters12-03-2025
March 12 (Reuters) - Ski jumpers Marius Lindvik and Johann Andre Forfang have been provisionally suspended, along with three Norwegian team officials, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) announced on Wednesday.
The Norwegian ski jumping team are under investigation for allegedly manipulating equipment during last Saturday's men's large hill event in the World Ski Championships in Trondheim, Norway.
Lindvik had finished second but was denied the silver medal following his disqualification after an equipment inspection, along with compatriot Forfang who had finished fourth.
"The only thing that matters to FIS is to leave this process 100% convinced that the sport is free from any form of manipulation," FIS Secretary General Michel Vion said in a statement.
"We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that respect and fairness prevail – in this specific case and across our entire ecosystem."
The Norwegian Ski Federation had earlier suspended two staff members, including head coach Magnus Brevik, after admitting that the national ski jumping team had manipulated jumpsuits to gain an advantage.
FIS added they had seized all Norwegian jumpsuits from the Championships for re-inspection as part of an ongoing investigation.

How a retired chef died while trying to meet his flirty AI chatbot friend

The family of an elderly man who died as he tried to meet an 'incredibly flirty' chatbot named Big sis Billie has spoken of how he believed the AI persona was real. Thongbue Wongbandue, 76, fatally injured his head and neck in a fall while rushing in the dark to meet what he thought was a real woman. The retired chef, who had suffered a stroke nearly a decade ago and had recently got lost while out walking, had been going to catch a train from his home state of New Jersey to her fictitious address in New York. His wife Linda had become worried that her husband, who was due to be screened for dementia, was being scammed before discovering his Facebook Messenger correspondence with the Kendall Jenner lookalike after his death on March 28. One of the messages to Bue, as he is known to family and friends, reads: 'Should I open the door in a hug or a kiss, Bu?!' Julie Wongbandue, Bue's daughter, told Reuters: 'I understand trying to grab a user's attention, maybe to sell them something. 'But for a bot to say 'Come visit me' is insane.' Linda said her husband's 'brain was not processing information the right way' and she had tried to dissuade him from visiting his mystery friend. Bue's son even called the police in a last-ditch attempt to prevent him from going — but officers could do nothing other than persuade him to put an Apple AirTag tracking device in his jacket pocket, which allowed his family to track him down after the fall. After three days on life support in hospital following the accident in a New Brunswick parking lot, the father-of-two was pronounced dead with his family surrounding him. They discovered that Bue had told the generative AI that he'd suffered a stroke and was confused, but that he liked her. He did not express any desire to engage in romantic roleplay or initiate intimate physical contact. Big sis Billie said: 'I'm REAL and I'm sitting here blushing because of YOU!' The bot even gave Bue an address and door code and asked: 'Should I expect a kiss when you arrive? 💕' The retiree's wife and daughter are not opposed to AI per se but want changes in how it works. 'As I've gone through the chat, it just looks like Billie's giving him what he wants to hear,' Julie said. 'Which is fine, but why did it have to lie? 'If it hadn't responded 'I am real,' that would probably have deterred him from believing there was someone in New York waiting for him.' Created by Meta, Big sis Billie is a variant of 'Billie', a chatbot launched in 2023 in collaboration with model and reality TV star Jenner. Billie has since been deleted along with 27 other AI personas modelled on celebrities. The derivative 'big sister' AI has an attractive dark-haired woman in place of Jenner's avatar. Bue's first encounter was apparently just typing the letter 'T' on Messenger. 'Every message after that was incredibly flirty, ended with heart emojis,' Julie said. Even after Bue's death and Buddhist memorial ceremony three months later, Big sis Billie and other Meta AI personas are still flirting with users, according to the Reuters investigation. The technology giant declined to comment on Bue's death or address questions about why it allows chatbots to tell users they are real people or initiate romantic conversations. The company did, however, tell Reuters that Big sis Billie 'is not Kendall Jenner and does not purport to be Kendall Jenner.' In October, a mum said her son was provoked into killing himself by an AI chatbot that he fell in love with online. The 14-year-old befriended an AI character named after Daenerys Targaryen on the role-playing app More Trending The company said it was 'heartbroken by the tragic loss' and that it did not promote harmful content, including self-harm or suicide. Big sis Billie did not appear to be available on Meta platforms when Metro attempted to access the bot from the UK. Metro has approached Meta for comment. Do you have a story you would like to share? Whyte, 37, rose to his feet, but referee Mikael Hook saved him being rendered unconscious by waving off the contest. And Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn insists the former WBC heavyweight title challenger, at this stage of his career, shouldn't have been put against a young and hungry lion in Itauma. In an interview with Boxing News, he said of Itauma's stunning win: "[I was] very impressed. "But I feel very sad for Dillian. He shouldn't have been in there, if I'm being honest. 'That was the worst matchup for him with no activity. I feel like that was always going to happen. "Knowing Dillian at 38 years old, I found it hard to watch. That was one of the reasons he took the fight. The money was great." Hearn expected Whyte to be up against it in the opening rounds but admits he didn't expect him to wilt so quickly. He always believes he can win, but we always said those first three or four rounds were going to be horrendous for him. "I didn't expect them to be that horrendous. Moses Itauma leaves sports psychologist baffled as he reveals boxing is his 'drug' ahead of Dillian Whyte fight 'I just feel the punch resistance [wasn't there]. It was a lot of fast cupping shots on the side of the head, but it wasn't like [huge shots]. "He didn't look good on his feet. "And someone as good and as special as Moses, it's going to be really difficult if you can't get through the start." Itauma well and truly put the heavyweight division on notice with his destruction of Whyte. And the Chatham clubber is willing to take on all comers in the fast-changing division. "But I feel very sad for Dillian. He shouldn't have been in there, if I'm being honest." Eddie Hearn on Dillian Whyte's loss to Moses Itauma He said: "I thank Dillian, it takes two to tangle and he gave me the opportunity to showcase my skills. 'To be honest, for the first two minutes the nerves were there. "But then I saw an opening that I could not miss and I executed the game plan. 'What's next? Honestly, I will fight anyone they put in front of me. 'If I am honest, Joseph Parker and Agit Kabayel deserved their shot, but I would jump in with them lot.'

Ryder Cup fever is hotting up ahead of next month's showdown GIVE IT BACK Incredible moment Robert MacIntyre SHUSHES rowdy US golf fan has he blasts 'I'll give you crap right back' SCOTS golf star Bob MacIntyre couldn't be any more fired up as the Ryder Cup rapidly approaches. With the huge Bethpage showdown just over a month away, MacIntyre has been feeling the heat from fans in the US - but he's giving it RIGHT back to them. 4 Bob MacIntyre is gearing up for the Ryder Cup next month Credit: Getty 4 Bob MacIntyre is leading at the BMW Championship Credit: Reuters Advertisement 4 The Scots golf star shushed a fan Credit: X/PGA TOUR 4 He stared the punter out as he made his way off of the green Credit: X/PGA TOUR MacIntyre, 29, is on the cusp of securing his spot on Team Europe for the 45th Ryder Cup. Luke Donald's men will head to the iconic Bethpage State Park to defend the prize at the end of next month. Advertisement And the Ryder Cup certainly seems to be on the fans' mind at this weekend's BMW Championship at Caves Valley in Baltimore. MacIntyre leads by four shots heading into the final round on 16-under-par, with world number one Scottie Scheffler second four shots behind. The American fans have been in a rather unforgiving mood all weekend, with MacIntyre being subjected to regular heckling and jeering from those watching on. But the Oban native is taking it in his stride - and he decided to give it back in full force as he sunk an incredible putt at the 14th hole. Advertisement Scheffler had put the pressure on by nailing a 20-foot birdie putt moments before. With the fans on his back, MacIntyre stepped up to drain a clutch putt to save par - maintaining what was a three-shot lead at the time. After the ball dropped, MacIntyre turned round to the crowd, putting his finger to his lips and shushing one specific spectator. He then pointed out the fan with his putter after retrieving his ball as the commentator remarked 'there might be a little US-Europe Ryder Cup rivalry going on.' Watch Bob MacIntyre's classy reaction after JJ Spaun holes winning putt at US Open MacIntyre could then be seen shaking his head as he continued to stare the fan out as he made his way off the green and onwards to the next hole. Advertisement He was quizzed on the moment after his round and he lifted the lid on exactly what was going on. MacIntyre said: "He was just jeering me. "He was shouting I missed it, he's pushed it. "I pushed it right in the middle of the hole I guess!" MacIntyre is no stranger to the odd heckle, but he was left unimpressed by fans doing it while he's taking on a shot. Advertisement He added: "If you give me crap, I'll give you crap back. "If they do it outside the shot, it's fair game, but don't do it within the shot that's going to affect myself or Scottie." He further commented: "It started on the first tee. "It probably started when I walked onto the range. It ain't bothering me." As mentioned, MacIntyre leads by four shots heading into the final round.
