SFI blames split in Left votes for JNUSU loss; calls for stronger unity against ABVP
NEW DELHI: After failing to make a significant impact in the central panel this year, the Students Federation of India (SFI) issued a statement attributing the JNUSU results to a fragmented opposition to the ABVP. The SFI emphasised the need for a stronger unity among Left and progressive forces to eliminate the ABVP from the varsity.
Aishe Ghosh, Secretary of SFI Delhi, explained, 'The two biggest progressive student organisations, SFI and AISA, contesting from different panels, led to a split in votes, reducing the margin of victory in the central panel.' Meanwhile, Sooraj Elamon, President of SFI Delhi, reiterated that the SFI has always been committed to forging unity against the ABVP-Admin nexus to protect Jawaharlal Nehru University from the Hindutva-Corporate onslaught on public education.
Elamon further highlighted SFI's successes, saying, 'SFI won four council positions, with the highest votes in the School of Languages and the School of Arts and Aesthetics, where Ajaypal and Krishnapriya secured 488 and 66 votes respectively. We also triumphed in the School of Biotechnology and the School of Physical Sciences, with Comrade Pratibha winning unopposed and Comrade Abhishek securing second place with 121 votes.'
Elamon stressed that the support for progressive values was clear, pointing out that ABVP has failed to increase its vote share since the last elections. He added, 'It is the failure to build a united struggle that paved the way for ABVP's victory. We hope left and progressive forces will learn from this and forge stronger unity inside and outside the council to lead the student resistance against the NEP, privatisation, centralisation, and communalisation of education.'
Historically, JNU's left-wing student organisations—AISA, SFI, DSF, and AISF—dominated JNUSU polls from 2016 to 2019. However, SFI's dominance in JNU politics has fluctuated, peaking in 2006-2007 and diminishing by 2014. Last year, these left organisations had fought together with the left parties making a clean sweep.

End intermediate studies in colleges, education dept to all dist authorities
Ranchi: The state school education and literacy department has asked all districts to work towards phasing out intermediate education in colleges. It added that Class XII students of these institutes should be enrolled in govt +2 high schools, intermediate colleges, and other approved affiliated colleges. In a letter issued to all deputy commissioners (DC), joint directors of education, and district education officers, the department's secretary Uma Shankar Singh said the order was issued to implement the National Education Policy. "The governor's secretariat has directed that conducting intermediate classes in constituent colleges is against NEP and has instructed for taking necessary steps in this regard," he said. Notably, students who cleared matriculation examinations are jostling for admissions after many constituent colleges in Ranchi have scrapped intermediate courses this year. Singh further said that class XII students should be shifted to schools located within a five-kilometre radius, keeping their convenience in mind, adding that their 100% enrolment must be ensured. "In case of problems, the authorities should contact the Jharkhand Academic Council and tackle them in a time-bound manner. The DC have been directed to supervise the implementation of the order," Singh added. The order came days after chief minister Hemant Soren formed a three-member committee comprising Ministers Ramdas Soren, Sudivya Kumar, and Dipika Pandey to discuss issues related to the enrolment of students and the future of teachers and staff in constituent colleges. Meanwhile, Jharkhand Angibhoot Mahavidyalaya Intermediate Anubandh Sikshak Sangh Secretary Ramanuj Pandey said, "The decision has come when the matter in this regard is pending before Jharkhand High Court. Moreover, the three-member committee has not made any recommendation so far. The decision would create uncertainty in the minds of students for a short period as they would not be sure where they would be enrolled. " Pandey added, "The secretary's letter has not mentioned anything about the absorption of teachers and staff engaged in the intermediate section of constituent colleges."

Teach students about Keeladi: Minister to teachers
Trichy: School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi urged teachers to teach students about Keeladi and its historical importance while the Union govt is resisting to present the real history of Tamil culture. Speaking at an introductory event of his new book on National Education Policy (NEP) at Jamal Mohammed college on Friday, the minister said the book was written to oppose the NEP as it was against students, parents and every other stakeholder. Nagapattinam VCK MLA Mohamed Shanavas, who spoke before the minister, also accused the Union govt of attempting to "erase" and attack Tamil Nadu's rich history. "It's there for everyone to see. Despite enough scientific evidence, the Union government continues to undermine the Keeladi finding and question it," he said. About 350 teachers and headmasters from across the district, along with around 100 other attendees, participated in the event.
