Punchestown Festival 2025 day 1 tips: Robbie Power's selections for Tuesday

Punchestown Festival 2025 day 1 tips: Robbie Power's selections for Tuesday

Fact To File is strongly fancied to land the William Hill Champion Chase (6.00), the feature race on day one of the Punchestown Festival.
Dropping to two miles shouldn't be an issue for the Ryanair Chase winner and a big galloping track like Punchestown should play to his strengths.
It's a great clash between him and Champion Chase victor Marine Nationale and it should be really exciting to see, but I do think it will be JP McManus' green and gold silks that are carried to victory by Mark Walsh for Willie Mullins.
The Closutton trainer has a really good record in this race, having won five of the last six renewals, and he could land another here.
Another Mullins runner, Kopek Des Bordes, can maintain his unbeaten record by following up his Supreme Novices' Hurdle win with another victory in the KPMG Champion Novice Hurdle at 4.15.
It's very hard to oppose him under Paul Townend, but stablemate Salvator Mundi is a course and distance winner, which will help, as will the drying ground.
But on drying ground at Cheltenham he was no match for Kopek Des Bordes and I think the Monabeg Investments Limited-owned runner will come home in front again.
The Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase comes next at 4.50 and this is a very competitive Grade 1, in which you can make a case for a number of runners.
Lecky Watson was very impressive at Cheltenham when finishing eight and a half lengths ahead of Ballyburn in the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase.
All of Slade Steel's really good form is on soft ground, but we think he'll appreciate nicer ground and stepping up to three miles will definitely suit him.
But Ballyburn could be very hard to beat. I think they got the tactics totally wrong on him in Cheltenham.
I can see them letting him gallop along in front today and if gets into a rhythm he will be very difficult to get past for the Mullins team.
I wouldn't have a strong knowledge on the form of the point-to-pointers in today's opening race (2.30), but one that looks interesting is Richard O'Keeffe's runner, Turnupdevolume.
He won a point-to-point a little over two weeks ago and jockey Barry Thomas Stone takes off a valuable seven pounds here.
There's a really strong British challenge in the Albert Bartlett Triple Crown Series Final Handicap Hurdle and a number of runners from across the Irish Sea look very interesting in it.
One that really stands out is Boyles Hill for Welsh trainer Evan Williams, with his daughter Isabel, who is a very capable jockey, taking the ride.
This six-year-old has won his last two starts and Evan Williams wouldn't be sending one over here if he didn't think he had a very good chance.
Lark In The Mornin is at the top of the market for the Killashee Hotel Handicap Hurdle at 3.40 despite being a little bit disappointing at Cheltenham when finishing third last in the County Hurdle, although he wasn't beaten that far.
But the one I'm siding with is Serienmond, who won at Leopardstown in March before finishing third at Fairyhouse last week when only beaten 2¼ lengths by winner Lord Erskine.
The strongest line of form in the Goffs Defender Bumper at 5.25 is Santo Sospir for Gordon Elliott and Harry Swan after winning here earlier in the season.
But it is very interesting that Nicky Henderson has brought over Laguna Beach in the colours of Michael Buckley and he could run a very big race.
And in the last race on the card at 6.35 Starting Fifteen is fancied for Emmet McNamara after finishing second on debut at Limerick in March.
Bet of the day - Fact To File - 6.00

Liam Dowling runs two dogs in Irish Oaks semi-finals at Shelbourne Park on Saturday

Indeed, Ballymac Danica and Ballymac Marcia finished first and third for him in the first of the quarter-finals last Saturday and they are drawn separately in the semi-finals this Saturday, with Ballymac Danica housed in trap 2 in the second semi-final and Ballymac Marcia housed in trap 6 in the first semi-final. *********************** There was no joy for the three Kerry-owned runners in the final of an open 750 sweepstake (winner, €5,000) at Curaheen Park last Saturday. Wellstreet Cath finished third behind the winner, Darbys Dancer, for a consolation prize of €1,000, while Ardfertmacsarah and Daleroad Poppy finished fourth and sixth, respectively, for consolation prizes of €650. There was, however, a brilliant win for the Liam Dowling-trained Solo And Go on the supporting programme. Big Kerry football involvement there. *********************** THE semi-finals of one of the biggest events of the year at Tralee, the Callaway Pro Am @ Stud Race of Champions, take place this Friday and the word is well out about a great starting line-up. Fastest winner was the Millstreet-owned Millridge Cora, which clocked an estimated 28.83 in an A2 525, while the other winners on going which varied from .30 slow to .10 slow were: Riverfield Tiger, 29.18; Outer Banks, 29.22; Quivers Disco, 29.80; Confident So So, 29.69; Quivers Buzz, 29.20; Manhattan Sally, 29.66; Pinewood Alannah, 29.38. *********************** TRALEE is such a great venue for benefit meetings, especially when the proper work is put in by those organising them, and the Oakview venue will be fairly humming this Saturday night by way of a benefit meeting for Scoil Iosagán, Ballybunion. Awesome £650,000 horse with ‘a hell of an engine' instantly made Royal Ascot favourite after astonishing debut

THIS awesome £650,000 horse with 'a hell of an engine' was instantly made a Royal Ascot favourite after an astonishing debut. Word had been strong for Karl Burke's Wathnan-owned two-year-old filly Zelaina ahead of her bow over 5f at Nottingham. 1 Zelaina was instantly made a Royal Ascot favourite after absolutely blistering debut at Nottingham Credit: Getty But even jockey James Doyle was taken aback by the ease with which she obliterated rivals after bursting out the gates. Making all, she sauntered over the line ahead of 4-1 Secret Oath, the three-quarter length margin of victory flattering the runner-up. Punters branded the breeze-up buy an 'absolute weapon' and said she was 'the one we were waiting for' - as bookies immediately made her favourite for the Queen Mary. Burke and Doyle teamed up to win it with Leovanni last year. And Zelaina is now Ascot-bound for the Group 2 on Wednesday, the second day of the five-day festival. Clearly buzzing afterwards, Wathnan's retained rider Doyle said: "She'd been doing the right things at home. "She wasn't 100 per cent coming here, she's a had a couple of things that meant she needed an easy time. "But Karl said she's very fast and she's shown she has an engine. Most read in Horse Racing "She caught me by surprise out the gates - then up into that stride and away she went. "She's quite hot so we'll do a few things to iron that out ahead of Ascot. "But she's got a hell of a big engine and a plenty of pace. "I was the last person to pull up but she just stood so I let her relax then just trotted her back. "She took quite a blow at the furlong pole but I expect her to come along fitness-wise. "She didn't have the perfect prep coming into today… so expect her to improve a lot." Bookies introduced Zelaina as 4-1 joint-fav alongside Lady Iman. But they were immediately forced to cut her and now she is a best 7-2 fav with the likes of William Hill. The Coolmore-owned monster, who is two from two and won from a nightmare position in the Marble Hill Stakes last time, had been as short as 11-10 for the Coventry Stakes on day one. For many he was one of the big bets of the meeting, with second-fav Treanmor being as big as 6-1. But a tweet from Ballydoyle read: "Gr.3 Marble Hill Stakes winner Albert Einstein unfortunately will not run at Royal Ascot due to a sprained joint. He will have an easy three weeks."
