KSRTC adds new luxury buses on Mangaluru

Time of India4 days ago
MANGALURU: The Mangaluru division of
KSRTC
launched the new Volvo Multi-axle seater 2.0 and Ambari Utsav buses sanctioned by the govt on Sunday. Rajesh Shetty, Senior Divisional Controller of KSRTC Mangaluru Division, said that the division was sanctioned two Volvo Multi-axle seater 2.0 and three Ambari Utsav buses.
The new buses will operate between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, via Puttur - Mysuru and Hassan routes. For the first time, the division introduced a day journey AC sleeper bus, which will start from Mangaluru at 1 pm to reach Bengaluru at 8 pm. An AC sleeper bus was also introduced on the Puttur – Sullia – Mysuru road, he said.
The division, which started in 1982, has been operating 550 schedules with 595 vehicles covering an average of 2.17 lakh kms, providing services to 1.2 lakh passengers every day, he added.
Speaking after flagging off the buses, MLC Ivan D'Souza said that the govt sanctioned additional luxury buses for the division, keeping in mind the convenience of passengers in the region. He said the implementation of Shakti schemes that offer free travel for women and other guarantee schemes helped Karnataka reach the number one position in terms of per capita income in the nation. When the govt transferred the scheme benefits directly to the people, it helped the state grow, he said.

The MLC lauded the efforts of Mangaluru division officials for proactively submitting proposals and getting the same approved by the govt. 'People will get the benefits of govt schemes effectively only if officials work proactively. The division will also get electric buses soon. I have also drawn the attention of the govt to develop the Mangaluru division of the KSRTC during the last Legislature Session. There are ample opportunities for the division to expand its operations, including commercial activities.
Bus stations in many cities have already been upgraded with high-tech facilities. However, we are lacking pace when it comes to development. I will raise the issue again in the next Legislature session to ensure that the bus station in Mangaluru is developed by providing high-tech facilities,' he said.
Dakshina Kannada district Guarantee Scheme Implementation Authority President Bharath Mundodi and others were present.

New-age tech may replace banks as market leaders: Sridhar Sivaram

"Once a consumer down-trades, it takes a long time for them to return to the original brand. A lot has been written about this. It's not that the middle class has shrunk—as one CEO claimed—it's that their pockets have shrunk," says Sridhar Sivaram , Enam Holdings . But does it have that kind of depth? The same question applies to pharma as well—does it really have the depth to rival banks purely in terms of market performance? Sridhar Sivaram: Yes, that's the question. If we go back, say 20 years, banks weren't 40% of the index. Index composition evolves over time—gradually. So, we don't know for sure if it has the depth yet. New sectors will emerge. As some participants believe, it could be the new-age economy that takes over. I don't know—maybe. People have different views. Personally, I find it hard to believe that financials will continue to be the leader. It could be another sector—maybe the new-age technology companies . A lot of them are going to get listed in the next few years; some have already made it to the index. So, they could lead. But at this point, it's all crystal-ball gazing. Rationally, with an aging global population and India also getting there in about 30 years, pharma makes sense as a theme. But what specifically within pharma excites you right now? Sridhar Sivaram: Pharma is very bottom-up. Each company has its own dynamics. But CDMO—Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisations—is something we like. This whole segment that supports big pharma with research and manufacturing is quite attractive. A number of new companies have entered this space, and even older players are moving into it. There are also many opportunities arising due to the patent cliff in the US. A lot has been written about GLP-1 drugs and what might happen when those patents expire—that presents a huge opportunity. Many Indian pharma companies are linked to that. Now, there's good, bad, and ugly here. Some believe these drugs have side effects—but that's for the regulators to evaluate. Our point is that there's significant opportunity. Also, if you look at companies like Glenmark, which recently announced the out-licensing of one of its products using newer technologies, others are likely to follow. So, beyond CDMO and generics, Indian pharma could enter a whole new era of drug discovery. Live Events Because R&D has historically been a pain point for Indian pharma companies, right? Sridhar Sivaram: Yes, exactly. R&D investments have traditionally focused on short-term gains—next quarter or next year. But new drug discovery takes four to five years, sometimes even longer. However, with the recent successes of a few companies, we believe more players will begin investing in that space. That's how we're approaching it. We were just talking about new-age tech companies—some of them have already made it to the index. But on the consumption front, staples haven't shown great earnings so far. Do you think this signals a shift, where new-age companies might outpace staples? Sridhar Sivaram: On staples, my personal view is that they're too focused on protecting margins, and that's coming at the cost of volume growth. If you look at companies like DMart or Jio, they have their own private labels, which are taking away incremental growth. Go to any of these stores and you'll see clones of well-known brands in different forms. And the quality isn't bad. Once a consumer down-trades, it takes a long time for them to return to the original brand. A lot has been written about this. It's not that the middle class has shrunk—as one CEO claimed—it's that their pockets have shrunk. So they're down-trading, while these staple companies continue to obsess over margins. If you keep focusing on margins and give up market share, it's well documented that regaining that share is difficult. It's up to these companies to decide what they want to do. As investors, we have many options. I don't have to be invested in a company growing at 4-5% volume and trading at valuations north of 50 times. Why should I? Of course, there are investors with index benchmarks—they may not have a choice. But we don't have those compulsions. But as you say the middle class pockets are shrinking, we're also seeing a strong trend of premiumisation—whether it's autos, luxury real estate, or even within consumption. Luxury goods are outperforming staples. So how do you reconcile this argument—shrinking pockets but rising premiumisation? Sridhar Sivaram: If you look at the actual volume of premiumisation, it's largely confined to the top 3% of India. That's not India. The remaining 97% has completely different dynamics. You need to travel to rural India to understand this. Most of us live in cities and assume that's the whole picture, but it isn't. The average annual income in many parts of rural India is ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,20,000. You can't sell premium goods there. That's why local brands—offering lower price points—are eating into the sales and margins of larger companies. They understand the price sensitivity of these markets better and are delivering accordingly.

$220 million worth of deals under scanner: After 25% tariffs, US sanctions 6 Indian firms; move taken over oil trade with Iran

Ai-generated image The US levied sanctions against several Indian businesses, accused of engaging in petroleum and petrochemical trade with Iran, as part of a larger enforcement targeting 20 global entities. On Wednesday, the US State Department unveiled the sanctions against 6 India-based companies, claiming these firms deliberately participated in "significant transactions" involving the acquisition and sale of Iranian petroleum products, breaching American restrictions on Iran. Among the sanctioned Indian enterprises are prominent petrochemical traders. The heaviest accusations fell on Alchemical Solutions Private Limited, which allegedly imported Iranian petrochemical goods valued above $84 million during January-December 2024. Global Industrial Chemicals Limited reportedly acquired Iranian petrochemicals, including methanol, worth over $51 million from July 2024 to January 2025. Jupiter Dye Chem Private Limited's imports of Iranian products, including toluene, totalled more than $49 million in this period. Ramniklal S Gosalia and Company allegedly procured Iranian petrochemicals valued above $22 million, comprising methanol and toluene, as stated by the US Justice Department in a press release. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ranked: The 25 Best Cities To Live In The World Learn More Undo US Records further claim Persistent Petrochem Private Limited imported Iranian petrochemicals, mainly methanol, worth approximately $14 million between October and December 2024 while Kanchan Polymers allegedly obtained Iranian polyethene products valued at over $1.3 million. The sanctions freeze all US-based assets of these firms or those controlled by US persons. American entities are barred from business dealings with the sanctioned organisations. The restrictions extend to any entity with 50 per cent or greater ownership by the sanctioned companies. These measures align with the US's ongoing "maximum pressure" strategy against Iran, focusing on the country's covert vessel network and intermediaries facilitating global Iranian oil and petrochemical distribution. American officials allege that Iran utilises revenue from these exports to support what they term "destabilising activities" in the Middle East and terrorist organisations. India's historical trade relations with Iran have persisted, although Iranian oil imports have decreased substantially since 2019 following earlier US sanctions. Sanctioned companies may appeal for removal from the US Treasury's Specially Designated Nationals list. The US administration states that sanctions aim to "bring about a positive change in behaviour". Organisations seeking to challenge their designation may submit appeals to the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, according to official documentation from the US State Department. In addition to the sanctions against the above Indian-based companies, few others with Indian connection have also been named by US Treasury. Tanais Way General Trading LLC is among the sanctioned and has exported shipments of Iranian-origin polyethylene to India-based Kanchan Polymers. Additionally, Cora Lines Inc., sanctioned by the US Treasury, is a subsidiary of Teodor Shipping L.L.C., which is controlled by a UAE-based Indian national. The enforcement action also encompasses firms in Turkey, the UAE, China, and Indonesia, which US officials identify as part of a worldwide network enabling Iranian oil and petrochemical commerce.
