Johnny Kenny signs Celtic contract extension
Former Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers striker Johnny Kenny has signed a new contract extension with Celtic, keeping him at the club until 2029. The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international joined on a five-year deal from Sligo Rovers in January 2022 and has had loan spells with Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers, where he netted 25 goals last year. Kenny netted his first goal for the club in May in a 5-1 win at Aberdeen, where Celtic return on Sunday in league action. Rodgers said of the contract extension: "It's good news for Johnny and the club. He's a young player that was signed a few years ago, went away, got experience, has come back and we can really see the difference in his development since he came back in January. "So we think he's still got a load more development to go. He's quick, he's hungry and we think in the future he can be a really good asset for the club." Kenny earlier revealed how important his manager's backing was. "All I wanted to do was commit my future to this club and I'm delighted it's done now," he told Celtic TV. "I feel really proud. I spoke to the manager at the start of the summer and it was a case of tying it all together. "I like to think that I can score goals and the manager believes in me too, so that helps when I'm in and around the box, knowing that the manager backs me. "I want to achieve everything possible at this club. I want to play Champions League football, win every trophy available and score goals. That's my aim." Kenny is currently competing with the likes of Daizen Maeda, Adam Idah and Shin Yamada for first-team action but there appears to be a possibility he will go out on loan again if Rodgers gets the attacking options he is looking for in the transfer market. Rodgers said: "At this very moment he's here and a part of our squad, so I think you look through to the end of the month and obviously there's still work across the squad to do. "But he's had a really good pre-season, worked very hard, this will give him confidence and give him that feeling that he's wanted at the club.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker, the former midfielder opened up about the trauma of both kidnappings, revealing he didn't even tell his manager about the second one. Mikel, now retired, explained the first incident happened when he was playing for Chelsea under boss Andre Villas-Boas. He said: 'My dad has his own business now which I helped him set up, and he was driving home from work with his driver. Advertisement 'A car pulled over in front of them with guns and everything — they got out and took him away.' "I remember AVB asked me, 'Do you want to play the game or not?. "I was finally back in the team, I was playing well — so I told him I'd think about it. "In the end I decided to play but the whole family was crying on the phone." Advertisement Mikel said the negotiations felt 'like buying a car,' with back-and-forth demands until they agreed on a fee. He added: 'I got on the phone with the kidnappers after. It was horrible, my dad was screaming, telling me, 'Whatever they want, just give it to them." remier League stars claim they are being 'held hostage' in 'abandoned airport for 12 hours with no food and water' "I wired the money back home, my brother withdrew it and they were told where to drop it off. They said come back in 30 minutes.' The second kidnapping came when dad Michael was snatched before Nigeria's World Cup match against Argentina. Advertisement He said: 'I was in my room getting ready for the game (World Cup). My phone kept ringing and eventually, I picked up. 'My brother said, 'We weren't going to tell you, but we have to, it's happened again. Dad has been kidnapped." Mikel revealed he was torn on whether to tell anyone, adding: 'I sat there for 30 minutes thinking, 'Should I tell the coach? Should I tell the team?' "In the end, I decided not to. I went out and played.' I couldn't focus. Advertisement "All I kept thinking was, 'How am I going to get my dad out of this again?. "At some point, I blanked out I wasn't even seeing what was going on.' Despite everything, Mikel played the full match keeping the situation completely to himself. Nigeria lost narrowly 2-1, with Lionel Messi on the scoresheet for Argentina. Michael was eventually released but the son Mikel admits the trauma of those moments still haunts him today.
