O'Brien: Shelbourne will not sit on lead at Tolka Park against Riejka

RTÉ News2 days ago
Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien has denied any notion his side will sit on their lead over Rijeka going into Tuesday night's Europa League third round qualifying second leg at Tolka Park.
The Reds hold a 2-1 advantage from last week and know they must be at their best again to progress to the play-off round and guarantee Conference League football this winter.
Shels soaked up limited pressure in the first half of the opening leg and fell behind to a penalty early in the second period.
From there they were scintillating going forward and brought the advantage back to Drumcondra, despite Rijeka creating more in the closing minutes.
O'Brien knows there will be periods they must dig deep for the conclusion of the tie but is certain it will not be their overall approach.
The Reds manager said: "If you look at the game last week, there was very little in it.
"I suppose they had a few chances. We had a few chances. They obviously had the majority of possession.
"We're coming in here tomorrow with a small advantage but we're here to attack the game. I don't see football about sitting in and hoping for the best. It's about attacking the game in front of you and I think the players that we have want to do that.
"For me, as a gameplan of just sitting in hoping for the best, I wasn't like that as a player so I'm not going to do that now as a coach."
Speaking in Rijeka after the game, O'Brien opined that the Croatian outfit were still expected to go through despite the deficit.
He tempered that stance today in a belief that the Premier Division champions can overcome any side at their treasured home venue.
He explained: "If you look at the overall [picture] before a ball had been kicked and where they're at and where we're at, they were favourites and they are [still] favourites.
"But again, it is two halves done and two halves to go. We're coming here to our place.
"We'd be back ourselves to beat anyone here."
One plus for the Reds is they will have a sold out crowd in Tolka Park and with no away fans present as Rijeka are currently serving a supporter suspension on the road from UEFA.
Asked if it was an advantage for his team, he said: "I think so. There was a great atmosphere over there last week. We had great fans there as well but at home with the whole place rocking for you, it does give you that little bit more I suppose
"It does give you that little more buzz and a little bit more energy sometimes.
"Sometimes you may have to suffer out of possession and the pump may come on and then we have to suck it up sort of thing.
"To have the fanbase there and being really loud and you know that they are supporting you, it is always that little added bonus.
"We have to make the most of that. We have to give the fans something to cheer about and I'm sure at the start there's going to be a real excitement ahead of the game because of what is at stake.
"It's about the boys going out and putting their best foot forward and putting on a show.
"They have to make sure the crowd is engaged in the game."
In team news, the Reds will be without Sean Gannon, Tyreke Wilson and Sean Boyd.
O'Brien declared Milan Mbeng fit for the game despite missing out on a place in the squad in the 2-2 draw with Bohemians last week.

'He has all the right qualities' - Romero replaces Son as Spurs captain

CRISTIAN ROMERO HAS been named as Tottenham's new captain after the departure of club legend Son Heung-min. Son, who had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, joined LAFC earlier this month. Romero had acted as vice-captain for the previous two years and started the Europa League final win over Manchester United as skipper before Son came off the bench in the second half. Advertisement The 27-year-old Argentine will lead his side out when Tottenham take on European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank told the official club website. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season. 'I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team.' Stephen Bradley confirms Jack Byrne is not injured after deregistration for crucial Euro tie

STEPHEN BRADLEY HAS confirmed that Jack Byrne is not injured after he was deregistered from the Shamrock Rovers squad for their Uefa Conference League third round qualifying tie with Ballkani. Competition rules allow for players in the squad to be added or removed for each stage, and The 42 understands that a disagreement between the head coach and player on the training ground prior to the Premier Division game with Derry City on 3 August has led to the 29-year-old's exclusion for the time being. Advertisement Byrne played in both legs of the previous round and also scored the fourth goal in a 4-0 win over St Joseph's. Rovers now trail 1-0 after last week's defeat in Kosovo and go into tomorrow's second leg hoping to overturn the deficit without the 29-year-old playmaker. 'No, he's not injured,' Bradley said. 'It's important we have a big game tomorrow. We'll be focusing on the team and the squad that's available to win the game tomorrow. 'There'll be no other talk today. Like I said, focus on the game, focus on the group, focus on winning this game. It's a big game for us and that's all I'll be talking about.' Bradley insisted that the matter has not been a distraction. 'No. We focus on what we do, we focus on the group, we always have, I've said for years, it's always been a focus on the group and that doesn't change. 'We go Thursday-Sunday, you see what they are like on Sunday and how in tune they are with the game. These players move on, focus, move on, focus, that's what they do.'

Joey O'Brien urges Shelbourne players to heal the hurt by progressing in Conference League

Joey O'Brien wants his Shelbourne players to channel their hurt from Europa League defeat into hunting for continental glory elsewhere this year. Shelbourne exited Uefa's second-tier competition on a 4-3 aggregate following a roller-coaster third qualifying round, second-leg clash with Croatian side Rijeka at a rocking Tolka Park on Tuesday night. Ahead following a rousing come-from-behind 2-1 first-leg win on the Adriatic coast last week, Shelbourne found themselves 2-0 down midway through the second half of the return leg to a couple of simply sublime strikes from Toni Fruk and Tiago Dantas. An 86th-minute Mipo Odubeko penalty, awarded after a lengthy VAR check, drew Shelbourne level in the tie before Ante Orec, who had fouled John Martin for the spot kick, won it with a goal right on 90 minutes. READ MORE While the better team emerged victorious, it was a heartbreaking way to lose in front of a raucous home crowd. 'We saw them celebrating [on the final whistle] and we want that in two weeks' time. We'll use this hurt and turn that into hunting,' said head coach O'Brien. 'We're bitterly disappointed but we're still in it [Europe] and we want to go through. Photograph: Niall Carson/PA Wire 'When we scored the penalty, we had the momentum with us and we had a chance after it and we didn't take ours and they took theirs. 'I felt they had a lot of chances, but they didn't really trouble us too much. And then the [first] goal, it was a bit of quality. The second goal too was a bit of quality.' O'Brien will head to Belfast on Thursday night to get a first-hand view on Shelbourne's next opponents in the Conference League playoffs. That will be either Linfield, whom the Reds knocked out in the Champions League first qualifying round, or Vikingur of the Faroe Islands, with the Irish League champions trailing 2-1 ahead of their second leg at Windsor Park. The winners then enter a playoff for a place in the Conference League league phase and its guaranteed minimum prize fund of €3.8 million. Shelbourne will be at home in the first leg, with the club again hoping to be allowed to stage it at their Drumcondra home rather than moving to Tallaght Stadium. 'We looked fitter, looked stronger towards the end of it,' said O'Brien of his side's improved second-half display. 'The second goal they score, it's an unbelievable shot and an unbelievable goal. Shels' Kerr McInroy dejected after Rijeka scored their second goal at Tola Park. Photograph: Ryan Byrne/Inpho 'The lads stuck at it. I was immensely proud of them, how they kept going. We got the peno then late doors and, here, we were ready for a barnstorming finish. We had the chance [through Milan Mbeng] and we didn't take it. They went up and got a little bit of luck, I suppose, with a breaking ball. A good finish. It was a sickener. 'I thought our lads put in a monster effort and were right there at the death, but it wasn't good enough.' One of them was midfielder Kerr McInroy, who had a big chance saved by Rijeka goalkeeper Martin Zlomislic at 1-0 down. 'We're just disappointed with the result,' said the 24-year-old Scot. 'They are a top side and they showed that with the goals. 'We're disappointed to go out, but we are aware that we have another chance to get group stage football in the next couple of weeks. 'They were really good, the goals showed the level and quality they've got. But I thought we did well against them across the two legs. We stopped them playing, but the goals killed us. 'We've enjoyed these last few weeks and it's given us the hunger to go and get more over the next few months. We know we've now got a playoff game to give us the opportunity to do that. 'It's good for me and everyone else to challenge ourselves against different teams, different countries and different levels of players.'
