Sabrina Carpenter hits back with cheeky alternative to provocative album cover
Sabrina Carpenter is barking back at the backlash surrounding her suggestive album cover.
The outspoken pop star is set to release her new album "Man's Best Friend" on Aug. 29, but the 26-year-old "Espresso" hitmaker took to social media Wednesday, June 25, to sarcastically slam critics of her provocative album cover.
In her caption, Carpenter wrote that she "signed some copies of Man's Best Friend for you guys & here is a new alternate cover approved by God available now on my website" alongside a white heart emoji.
The breakout singer's June 11 album announcement garnered criticism with its imagery showing Carpenter, dressed in a black dress and high heels, kneeling on the ground in a dog-like pose while an unidentified man stands off to the side and pulls her by the hair.
Sabrina Carpenter sparks controversy with provocative 'Man's Best Friend' album cover
In the new photos, Carpenter faces the camera and looks away in two separate shots – one close-up and another full-body photograph – as she stands and holds onto a man, with her hands on his arm and back.
"Man's Best Friend," Carpenter's seventh studio effort, follows the release of her breakthrough 2024 album "Short n' Sweet," which catapulted her to superstardom after the former Disney star worked for years in the music industry.
The album, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, spawned the hit singles "Espresso," "Please Please Please," "Taste" and "Bed Chem," as well as solidified the singer's playful pin-up girl image.

The Social Network Part II Is Coming and Aaron Sorkin Is Taking on a New Role
It's been 15 years since The Social Network hit theaters, giving moviegoers an iconic look at the shady history of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg. And after years of rumors about a sequel, it sounds like Part 2 is finally happening. Aaron Sorkin, the writer of The Social Network, is set to both write and direct The Social Network Part II, according to a new report from Deadline. The original movie was directed by David Fincher, known for movies like Fight Club (1999), Gone Girl (2014), and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Sorkin's directing credits include Molly's Game, Being the Ricardos, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. The movie will be based on The Facebook Files, a series of articles from the Wall Street Journal that explored the documents leaked by Meta whistleblower Frances Haugen in 2021. Gizmodo wrote our own series of articles based on the same files. According to Deadline, Sorkin will focus on the violence that was inspired by Facebook's platform, including the social media platform's role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attempted self-coup by Donald Trump at the U.S. Capitol. But unnamed sources were quick to tell Deadline this wouldn't just be a Jan. 6th movie. There are plenty of other angles to approach the topic of violence linked to Facebook, including the company's role in amplifying hate in Myanmar in 2017, contributing to that country's genocide of Rohingya Muslims. The news outlet notes the movie will look at 'Facebook's effect on teens, preteens, violence, and countries outside the U.S.' The movie isn't in production yet, and while Jesse Eisenberg played Zuckerberg in the first movie, it's not clear whether he'll return. Deadline even says it's unknown how big of a role Zuckerberg will have in the new movie, suggesting it's possible that we spend a lot more time with characters outside the company rather than a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of Facebook. The original movie was a box office hit, raking in $226 million globally and earning 8 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The Social Network went on to win three Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Score. There's no word yet on whether Trent Reznor will supply the soundtrack for the Social Network sequel, another thing that, like Fincher, really set the first movie apart. The original Facebook movie was Reznor's first dedicated soundtrack for a film, and he's gone on to compose other hit soundtracks with his producing partner Atticus Ross for movies like Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011), The Killer (2023), and the 2019 HBO series Watchmen.

I just got a first look at Coca-Cola's new Star Wars cans and AR holograms — and both are cooler than you'd expect
Blue milk might be Star Wars canon, but for fans like me here on Earth, Coca-Cola is a little more iconic. Now, Star Wars and Coca-Cola are coming together in a new collaboration featuring 30 collectible character cans and an AR experience that turns you into a hologram — and I got an early look at it all. In what's being called the 'Refresh Your Galaxy' campaign (the corresponding, easter egg-laden video can be watched here), Coca-Cola is releasing a limited-edition collection of new cans and bottles featuring bespoke character designs from all corners of the Star Wars universe. There are classics like Darth Vader and C-3PO, all the way through icons from Disney+ series like Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano. There are some particularly charming nods across the lineup of Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero cans and bottles. My favorite is a toss up between Leia from the sequel trilogy (I still get emotional over the late Carrie Fisher) and K-2SO, the hilariously blunt former Imperial security droid we met in Rogue One but more recently got to seem more of in Andor Season 2. Here's what (or should I say, who) to expect to see in full collection: It's worth noting that some characters will only be available on Coca-Cola products sold at Disneyland and Disney World parks: The Mandalorian and Grogu; First Order Stormtrooper; and Chewbacca. In other words, avid collectors may want to plan a trip to Galaxy's Edge for sometime after July 7, which is when the collaboration will officially roll out. (And yes, a 7/7 launch date is almost definitely a nod to A New Hope's 1977 release.) But that's not all. Refresh Your Galaxy includes a new augmented reality experience accessed by scanning a can or downloading the special campaign app. It lets you record yourself as a Star Wars-style hologram, complete with glowing blue projection lines and subtle signal interference as though you're being projected by R2-D2. As part of the experience you can choose a character type like Jedi, Sith or even Twi'lek, then record a short message and watch it beam into surroundings through a smartphone camera. I always knew I'd make an excellent Stormtrooper, but that didn't make seeing my face under the helmet any less awesome. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Together, the collectible cans and AR hologram feature hit that sweet spot between nostalgia and innovation that, to me, keep fans of all ages in mind. Whether you're into the thrill of tracking down every character design for a collection or just want to drop a hologram version of yourself into your group chat reporting from the Black Spire Outpost, this campaign is one of the most thoughtful Star War collaborations of recent years.

Matthew Schaefer as Superman? Top NHL Draft prospects get DC superhero treatment in new card set
With the 2025 NHL Draft orbiting near the theatrical release of DC Studios' new universal beginnings under director and co-studio head James Gunn and his new 'Superman' film in July, Upper Deck saw a chance to combine two of its biggest partners (the NHL and DC) into one of its popular and nostalgic trading card formats. Advertisement Starting today, alongside tonight's NHL Draft, Upper Deck is releasing a new set of Fanimation cards, made famous in the early '90s with a basketball set that included Michael Jordan's Agent 23. The new Fanimations feature five of this year's top NHL prospects and are being released on the company's e-Pack platform. Each prospect has been turned into a superhero inspired by some of DC's classic characters, with illustrations by artist Carlo Barberi. Matthew Schaefer (Superman), Michael Misa (Batman), James Hagens (The Flash), Porter Martone (Green Lantern), and Caleb Desnoyers (Nightwing) were all drawn wearing hockey uniforms influenced by some of DC's heaviest hitters. Last week, Upper Deck announced an exclusive trading card and memorabilia deal with Schaefer, who is projected to be selected No. 1 overall by the New York Islanders. Upper Deck has similar deals in place with Misa and Hagens, as well as trading card exclusivity with Martone, Desnoyers, Roger McQueen, Kashawn Aitcheson, and Carter Bear. A design team at Upper Deck assigned the superhero influences for each prospect without collaboration with the players so that the debut of the cards would be a surprise for each new Upper Deck signee as they enter the beginnings of their NHL careers. 'They're not the (actual DC) characters, but we wanted to blend the world and present the prospects inspired by those characters, so the people who know those characters will really be able to see how their cards are inspired by those various (DC) characters,' said Upper Deck president Jason Masherah. Upper Deck began a new partnership with DC earlier this year, as Marvel moved to Topps. Upper Deck's first set under the new agreement was DC Annual, and it says there are more DC projects currently in development. Masherah sees this new set as a chance for the company to go back to its comic book roots with the Fanimation brand, with a sense of irony attached. The original Fanimation cards were illustrated by one of the biggest artists in the history of the comic book industry, Jim Lee, who happens to now be the chief creative officer and publisher of DC. 'We've been doing Fanimation as an easter egg in our Upper Deck hockey releases for the last few years. We kind of changed the art style year in and year out to kind of keep it fresh,' Masherah said. 'This is really the first time we've taken it back to where its origin story comes from, which is the early '90s with some of the biggest comic book artists in the world when there was kind of this crossover of blending athletes and comic book characters.' Advertisement The new set of super hockey prospects being available through e-Pack is a part of Upper Deck's effort to have a reach to its fandom regardless of where they are. Upper Deck's e-Pack website allows fans to buy packs online, store their cards digitally and have purchases shipped as a physical card on demand. 'The reality is that not everybody lives near a card or comic book store and especially when you get outside of the country, there aren't a lot of card stores around the world and there's a lot of people who want to buy cards, especially cards that have what we call hobby content or the more rich product,' Masherah said. 'So this is our way to essentially give anyone with an internet connection the ability to buy packs globally.' Turning top hockey prospects into superheroes is just the beginning of Upper Deck's plans for merging sports with DC in its products. In coordination with DC's 'Summer of Superman' — a multi-platform initiative including comics, trading cards and other products aligned with the release of the new 'Superman' movie — Masherah says there will be four different crossover sets featuring Superman and the NHL, including the Fanimation release. Another will include Upper Deck's two hockey spokesmen, Wayne Gretzky and Connor McDavid, in a set influenced by two of the first images of the 'Superman' movie that were released by Gunn. That set will be released in July alongside the film. Gunn's first Superman image was one of the hero, played by actor David Corenswet, putting on his red boots while Metropolis is being attacked by an alien outside the view of the window. Another image Gunn released was of Superman on the moon looking at Earth with his super-dog, Krypto. A famous image of Gretzky putting on his skates and McDavid's known love for his dog will be used as influence for those cards. Two other NHL/DC sets will be released in the fall to coincide with the 'Superman' film's streaming and home video release. There will also be an Upper Deck/Superman collaboration with NASCAR, Tyler Reddick and Jordan's 23XI racing team. A set of two cards related to that is available now on e-Pack with more available on June 28. Reddick's No. 45 Toyota Camry XSE will feature Superman and Upper Deck logos when it races in the NASCAR Cup Series at Echo Park Speedway on June 28. Advertisement 'We've had a relationship with Warner Bros. for several years,' Masherah said. 'In a couple weeks we'll have a product called Superman Brilliance coming out, which we're very excited about. What we've seen in the trading card industry in general is prices have escalated dramatically and Superman Brilliance is built to be very accessible, especially around the movie coming out. … And we have our Metal Universe Batman that will come out towards the end of the summer/early fall, as well. We've got kind of a full slate. The timing couldn't have been better … the ability to tie this to the NHL Draft. It's in LA. It's in Hollywood. It's where DC is headquartered here. Everything kind of came together at one time.' The Athletic maintains full editorial independence in all our coverage. When you click or make purchases through our links, we may earn a commission.
