KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Amid rising protectionism and unilateralism, stronger cooperation among China, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries will boost global trade and investment, a Malaysian expert has said, Xinhua reported.
"China, as well as ASEAN and GCC countries, all share common aspirations in development and global challenges. It therefore makes good sense for us to work more closely than before in multiple sectors," said Bunn Nagara, director and senior fellow at the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Caucus for Asia-Pacific, an independent think tank based in Kuala Lumpur.
Energy, food security, and supply chain resilience offer the greatest potential for trilateral cooperation, Nagara told Xinhua on Saturday. The GCC leads in oil and gas, China leads in renewables and electric vehicles (EVs), and ASEAN is a key consumer market and production hub.

"Better resilience can be achieved by starting to work together more closely, then in ironing out any difficulties by resolving challenges along the way," he said. "What is important is an open attitude receptive to new areas and ways of cooperation, while remaining sensitive to the needs of other partners."
Nagara sees the BRI as a key mechanism for advancing the trilateral collaboration. "The BRI is a vast project that covers many related areas, including the digital economy and the green transition," he said.
The BRI is closely aligned with their shared interests in sustainable growth, offering fertile ground for ASEAN-GCC-China synergies, he added.
As global trade faces strong headwinds from protectionism and unilateralism, Nagara believes that the ASEAN-GCC-China cooperation serves as a model for the Global South.
"China and the ASEAN and GCC countries are also nations of the Global South, besides being Asian countries," said Nagara. The collaboration could inspire similar initiatives among countries in Africa and Latin America that share common aspirations.
"We do what we do to protect our legitimate interests in development, not to threaten other countries or regions. We prefer to be non-confrontational because that is a better way to ensure mutual benefit," Nagara said.

Malaysia thanks Poland for Gaza aid, strengthens ties
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has conveyed its sincere appreciation to Poland for extending humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, particularly through its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the provision of emergency relief. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Poland's commitment to humanitarian efforts, including airdrops of essential supplies, reflected its principled stance on the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. 'I, on behalf of Malaysia, express my appreciation and thanks for the support for UNRWA and your stance on the two-state solution,' Anwar said at a joint press conference with visiting Polish President Andrzej Duda here today. The Prime Minister also stressed the urgent need for sustained humanitarian access and a peaceful resolution to the long-standing conflict, describing the situation in Gaza as a matter of global moral responsibility. 'There is a pressing need to secure peace and ensure humanitarian assistance continues to reach Gaza and the occupied territories,' Anwar said. Recently, international media reported that the Polish Embassy in Amman coordinated the delivery of humanitarian aid from Poland to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip which included over six tonnes of medicines, powdered milk, essential items for children, hygiene supplies and blankets that arrived in Jordan on April 23 aboard a Polish Armed Forces aircraft. In addition to the Gaza issue, the two leaders also discussed broader global and regional developments, including Malaysia's experience within ASEAN, ties with China and the country's engagement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). This year marks Malaysia's fifth term as ASEAN Chairman, having previously held the chairmanship in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. On Ukraine, the Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia's strong advocacy for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict, noting its far-reaching consequences. 'This ongoing conflict is not only a threat to Europe but also to the international community and our economic interests,' he said. Duda is on his first official visit to Malaysia, which comes at a significant moment - coinciding with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship and Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025. Earlier today, Duda was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar and an official luncheon hosted by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex. According to Wisma Putra, Duda is also scheduled to visit the Second Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps at the Sunggala Camp in Port Dickson and deliver a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. Duda's visit underscores the robust and friendly relations between Malaysia and Poland, which are founded on mutual respect and close cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971. In 2024, Poland ranked as Malaysia's 8th largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5 per cent to RM5.66 billion compared to 2023. Malaysia's primary exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products and machinery, while key imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and parts, electrical and electronic products and transport equipment.

Maxim submits appeal after cease-and-desist notice from Apad
KUALA LUMPUR: Maxim Malaysia has filed an appeal and submitted all relevant documents to the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) following the issuance of cease-and-desist letters for operating without a valid E-Hailing Vehicle Permit (EVP) authorisation. Its Head of Legal and Government Relations, Mushfique Ahmed Chowdury, said the company had just concluded a meeting with Apad and had provided all necessary documents and explanations, including the required amendments in line with regulatory provisions under the Land Public Transport Act 2010. "We have complied with Apad's instructions and submitted all necessary appeals and supporting documents as part of our efforts to ensure that our operations align with the legal and compliance requirements set by the Transport Ministry and Apad for all e-hailing companies," he said at a media briefing today. The meeting marked the third between Maxim and Apad ahead of a final decision by the ministry. Present were Maxim Malaysia director Mohd Hazwan Musley and Apad deputy director-general Masita Mat Isa. Mushfique added that the company has followed all instructions issued by Apad and remains fully committed to regularising its operations. He also said that Maxim would continue to serve the Malaysian market and reaffirmed the company's intention to operate in full compliance with the law. He also assured drivers, passengers, and stakeholders that Maxim remains dedicated to supporting the community it serves. "The company's priority is to safeguard the livelihoods of its legally registered drivers and ensure they can continue operating without disruption. "Our drivers are the core of our company. We are working continuously with the government to ensure full compliance with all regulations imposed on e-hailing operators," he said. Last month, Maxim announced that it was in discussions with the authorities regarding the directive to cease operations from July 24. This followed Apad's issuance of cease-and-desist letters to two e-hailing platforms, inDrive and Maxim, for allegedly operating without proper authorisation in Malaysia. Transport Minister Anthony Loke had said that while appeals may be submitted by the companies, the final decision will rest solely with him in his capacity as the minister. When asked about measures taken by Maxim following a raid by Apad in 2023 over alleged permit violations, Mushfique clarified that the agency had only issued a notice for operational improvements. "It was not related to the cancellation of our licence. It was simply a notice requesting us to respond with details of the improvements we would implement in our operations," he said. Regarding driver compliance, he said Maxim ensures that only those with complete and valid documents are granted access to the system and allowed to accept passenger requests. He also said the issuance of the cease-and-desist letters has affected the company's revenue, although her did not disclose the extent of the losses.
