Clickbait cruelty: How social media silences truth

Her calm demeanour was mocked. She was accused of using the tragedy for publicity, insulted for not crying on camera, and targeted with communal slurs simply for expressing gratitude to Muslim men. Her appearance was dissected, her choice of clothing questioned, and her language ridiculed. The abuse she faced was swift, vicious, and deeply personal—an avalanche of hate disguised as public opinion.
Her grace under grief didn't fit the script that many expected, and for that, she was vilified. In today's hyperconnected world, this kind of collective cruelty has a name:
Verbal lynching
. It's not new, but it's growing. Fuelled by outrage, amplified by algorithms, and legitimized by silence, it is becoming a defining feature of digital discourse—especially in Kerala, where social media and public commentary are intensely intertwined.
In a state deeply plugged into platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp, even a small mistake or a misunderstood comment can quickly spiral into viral outrage. What once might have been a personal or legal issue now becomes a public spectacle. Anyone—from an ordinary citizen to a public figure—can be targeted overnight. The backlash comes swiftly: Abusive comments, doctored content, and viral posts that can destroy reputations within hours.
What fuels this is not just anger, but attention-seeking and a rush of validation. Social media offers instant rewards—likes, shares, applause—for expressing moral outrage. Unfortunately, this outrage is often based on half-truths or complete misinformation. With little effort to verify facts, people react emotionally, and the damage is done long before any truth can catch up.
Some media outlets add fuel to this fire. In their race for viewership and clicks, sensationalism often trumps accuracy. Individuals are framed as villains through selective editing, misleading headlines, or provocative social media 'cards.' These curated snapshots, often devoid of full context, are designed to provoke. The result? People are reduced to caricatures, judged not for who they are, but for how they're portrayed in a moment of outrage.
This demonisation has serious consequences. Reputations are shredded, careers collapse, and mental health suffers. The emotional toll is immense—shame, fear, anxiety, and, in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts. For many, the experience of being verbally lynched online can feel just as traumatic as real-world persecution.
Worse, this trend silences genuine dialogue. People grow afraid to speak their minds, fearing that an honest opinion could be taken out of context and used against them. The space for disagreement and debate shrinks. In its place, we get conformity driven by fear and a reluctance to challenge the majority view.
The threat goes beyond individuals. Online mob justice deepens social divides, often along communal or ideological lines. When misinformation targets specific communities, it feeds prejudice and fuels an 'us vs them' mentality. Words of hate, even disguised as moral outrage, normalize intolerance and dehumanize others. Over time, this environment can lead to real-world hostility—even violence.
The challenge of sensationalism isn't limited to the media alone. It's also about how we, as consumers, respond. Many of us contribute to the noise by reacting too quickly, without checking facts or considering the impact of our words. Social media algorithms thrive on outrage, and we feed them with every comment and share.
To move forward, we need a collective shift. As individuals, we must learn to pause before reacting—verify information, consider alternative viewpoints, and respond with empathy. Schools and universities must teach media literacy and critical thinking. We need to raise a generation that can distinguish between opinion and fact, outrage and justice.
Media houses, too, must take responsibility. They must resist the lure of sensationalism and commit to fairness, balance, and factual reporting. Social media platforms must strengthen policies against harassment, misinformation, and hate speech.
Ultimately, justice must be rooted in truth and compassion. While holding people accountable is important, it should never come at the cost of human dignity.

With nearly a million views, Mallya's latest post quickly gained traction and prompted mixed reactions. 'You deserve justice. Let's see when GOI support you. Good luck,' a user wrote. 'If you are really innocent a toy claim, hire the best lawyer, approach SC, and get a clean chit. You can then come back proudly with your head held high,' another user commented. 'You will always be remembered as a clown. That podcast had zero impact on mature people, only underage RCB fans might have believed it,' a third user reacted. A key accused in a major bank loan default case involving over Rs 9,000 crore linked to the Kingfisher Airlines, Mallya fled from India in 2016. He faces serious allegations of cheating, criminal conspiracy, money laundering, and the misuse of loan funds provided by a union of Indian banks, led by the State Bank of India (SBI). His companies are under probe by multiple agencies in India, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Nevertheless, this uncertainty hasn't stopped the internet from speculating and creating numerous memes about her. In a candid podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani, Mallya opened up about his rise, fall, and the controversial collapse of Kingfisher Airlines. The episode has gone viral, clocking over 20 million views on YouTube within just four days and generating widespread traction on Instagram and Facebook. Reacting to the overwhelming response, Mallya posted on X on June 10, 'To say that I am humbled and overwhelmed is well short of what I truly feel.' Vijay Mallya's rare public appearance In his first extensive interview since 2013, Mallya sat down for over four hours to discuss his version of events that led to the downfall of Kingfisher Airlines. The conversation, which aired on Thursday, June 5, was titled 'Vijay Mallya Podcast: Rise & Downfall Of Kingfisher Airlines, Loans & RCB'. In the podcast, Mallya claimed he made four different settlement offers to banks between 2012 and 2015 after Kingfisher Airlines collapsed, but none were accepted. 'It was always my intention to settle. Never did I say I didn't want to pay,' he told Shamani. He also mentioned meeting the then chairperson of the State Bank of India (SBI) at their Hyderabad training academy with a settlement proposal. 'They wanted ₹14,000 crore which is why they didn't accept,' he said. Earlier this year, in February, Mallya's counsel told the Karnataka High Court that around ₹6,200 crore had already been recovered. This came after Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament last December that ₹14,000 crore had been recovered from Mallya, Nirav Modi, and Mehul Choksi. Mallya faces multiple charges, including cheating, conspiracy, and money laundering. His companies, including Kingfisher Airlines and United Breweries (Holdings) Limited, are under scrutiny for violating the Companies Act and capital market norms. Vijay Mallya on Kingfisher's collapse Mallya also revisited a key meeting with the then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee during the early years of Kingfisher's financial troubles. 'I told him we needed to downsize the airline. He said continue as is – and that's how it all started,' Mallya recalled. Addressing misconceptions around the loans, Mallya said, 'Kingfisher Airlines never borrowed from SBI. Let me set the record straight.' He then explained that SBI was a lender to Air Deccan, which later merged with Kingfisher in 2008. Post-merger, the two bank groups became a single lending entity. 'The consortium of 17 banks believed in the vision. They did their own appraisals,' he said, adding that support from the then finance minister helped secure loans through SBI Capital Markets, despite weak credit ratings. Mallya further stressed he had personally infused ₹3,000 crore into the airline from UB Holdings Ltd. 'You talk about siphoning money, my lifestyle, Formula 1... but no one talks about the money I put in to keep it afloat,' he said. 'I gave my personal guarantee. The UB Group gave a corporate guarantee. Koi chor kabhi apna personal guarantee deta hai kya (Does any thief ever give a personal guarantee)?' He also referred to Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, who has publicly stated that Mallya put everything on the line for Kingfisher. 'But that's not appreciated. That's sad,' he said. Mallya alleged the media was influenced by the government to push a particular narrative. 'That is why I haven't bothered about it in the last nine years,' he said. "Vijay Mallya has not borrowed a single rupee from anybody ever. Kingfisher Airlines, the company, borrowed – and I was the guarantor. There's a big difference,' he clarified. He reiterated that the recovery amount includes his personal shares and collaterals such as the Kingfisher brand and properties. 'Nobody dreams of sharing values. That's your answer to all the narratives,' he added. Mallya also used the platform to issue a long-awaited apology to Kingfisher Airlines employees. 'For those who are interested, I have spoken for the first time in nine years on this podcast.
