Chelsea fans rip into Jamie Carragher as Sky Sports pundit reveals 'hot take' for new season

Daily Mirrora day ago
Jamie Carragher has made a prediction that does not sit well with Chelsea's fans ahead of the new season as the Blues prepare for Champions League action after a spell out of the competition
Chelsea fans have slammed Jamie Carragher over his predictions for Chelsea's Champions League campaign. The former Liverpool defender has suggested the Blues will not make it out of the group stage of Europe's premier competition.

Enzo Maresca's side finished fourth in the Premier League to earn their way back into the tournament after two seasons outside of it. The west London team found European success in the UEFA Conference League and followed that up with a win in the Club World Cup in the United States.

But that was not convincing enough to persuade Carragher that Chelsea would be able to follow that up with an exciting return to the Champions League.

"Hot take on Chelsea from me," Carragher said on The Overlap. "I don't think Chelsea will qualify out of the Champions League group stage."
That caused some consternation among the panel alongside Carragher. Fellow pundit Jill Scott said: "Oooh, that is a hot take."
Chelsea will be expected to progress through the group stage with eight automatic qualifiers from the group of 36. Teams finishing from ninth to 24th enter a play-off around to reach the last 16.
Last season, Liverpool topped the standings after their eight matches, while Arsenal were third, Aston Villa were eighth and Manchester City were 22nd. Blues fans did not take kindly to being tipped to not follow in the footsteps of those teams.
"This clown is deliberately discrediting @ChelseaFC to gain relevance," one supporter said. "Without Chelsea in everything he says, he's as dumb as his face looks.".

"Carragher has been crying about Chelsea ever since Zola embarrassed him on national television," said another. A further user added: "At this point Carragher is using Chelsea to boost his numbers"
"That guy is just an attention seeker," said a social media user. "Forget him. His comment about Chelsea, whether good or bad don't matter to me."
It's not the first time that Carragher has prompted Chelsea ire ahead of the new season.

"When I look at Chelsea, I think about what you did in the Club World Cup – everyone wanted to win it,' he told The Overlap Fan Debate.
" Real Madrid really wanted to win, PSG did, and so did Manchester City, all those that we class as the best teams. So I do think it's a big thing and it will help build a connection between Enzo Maresca and the supporters, which wasn't really there last season.

"I'm not sure it'll push Chelsea any closer to the title though. When Chelsea do business, over the last couple of years, it feels like a lot of players are changing without anyone really lifting the level. I know Cole Palmer has been amazing, but all your wingers feel the same.
"A perfect example is [Jamie] Gittens coming in and Madueke leaving – there is no elevation, and I see that with a lot of positions at Chelsea."

Mo Salah breaks down in front of Kop as Diogo Jota saluted after Liverpool win

Liverpool paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota as they began their Premier League title defence against Bournemouth and Mohamed Salah was emotional after the final whistle Liverpool star Mo Salah was reduced to tears after Liverpool's victory over Bournemouth as home fans paid tribute to Diogo Jota. Tributes were paid to Jota before, during and after the game, following his tragic death in a car accident in July. ‌ Salah had scored Liverpool's fourth goal as they fought off a Bournemouth comeabck to win 4-2 at Anfield. Fans around the stadium chanted Jota's name after the final whistle blew, and Salah was visibly emotional as he approached the supporters. ‌ "You've just seen there, an outpouring of emotion from Mo Salah," Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said. "I think it's going to be like that for Liverpool players, staff, fans throughout the season. ‌ "It's just going to hit them at moments during games, at the end of games, after victories, after defeats. They'll recognise they've got their team-mate, their colleague, someone they loved, not with them any more. It's incredibly sad, and obviously what we've just seen there from Mo Salah was really special." Moments earlier, Salah had clinched victory for Liverpool with a stoppage-time goal. However, victory wasn't always assured for the reigning Premier League champions. Liverpool went in 1-0 up at the break, with Hugo Ekitike scoring on his Premier League debut, and Cody Gakpo doubled the lead early in the second half. The lead didn't last, though, with Antoine Semenyo scoring twice for the visitors. It looked as though victory would elude victory, only for super-sub Federico Chiesa to volley home from around the penalty spot. The goal was the Italian's first in the Premier League, and just the third he has scored for Liverpool since joining from Juventus. "I said on commentary that it was a weird decision. Taking [Florian] Wirtz off and Chiesa on," commentator Jamie Carragher said. "But that's a magical moment for him. A last minute winner in front of the Kop. I thought he mis-hit it but he actually got really good contact on it. It doesn't go in with any great pace." Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock was covering the game for BBC Radio 5 Live and he had praise for Salah's clincher. "So often we see him come off the right flank onto his left foot but this time it comes from the opposite side," he said. "He backs the defenders off into the penalty area, cuts inside on his right foot and another pass into that far corner. A quite brilliant finish." Dane Murray celebrates contract with goal as Celtic ease past Falkirk

Dane Murray celebrated his new contract with his first Celtic goal as the holders beat Falkirk 4-1 in the Premier Sports Cup. The 22-year-old defender headed home Celtic's third goal of the second-round clash at Parkhead. Murray, who has already overcome two separate cruciate ligament injuries in his career, earlier signed a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2028. Daizen Maeda and Alistair Johnston were also on target and Falkirk defender Liam Henderson put through his own net before Keelan Adams scored an impressive consolation goal for the Premiership newcomers. Centre-back Murray was one of six players coming into the Celtic line-up alongside goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels and Johnny Kenny. The Hoops beat then Championship side Falkirk 5-2 on their way to winning last season's tournament and this was another open encounter with both sides creating chances in the first half. Kenny volleyed wide early on after James Forrest's lay-off and former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain saved long-range strikes from Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney before scrambling to meet Henderson's wayward passback, which just went wide. Ross MacIver dragged a shot wide at the other end after a loose pass from Murray. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after McGregor returned the ball into the box following a corner. Tierney ran on to meet the cross and nodded the ball down for Maeda to score with a diving header. There were further chances at each end before the break. Sinisalo saved brilliantly from Calvin Miller's 25-yard strike before denying Alfredo Agyeman and MacIver. Engels and Forrest missed close-range headers at the other end. Celtic were more dominant after the break and doubled their lead in the 54th minute after Falkirk lost possession from a throw-in. Johnston chased down Miller as the former Celtic player headed back towards his own goal and the right-back won the ball before curling into the far corner with his left foot. Murray got his big moment in the 61st minute when he headed home from an inswinging corner from Engels. Celtic went further ahead three minutes later as Yang Hyun-jun made an instant impact after coming on with home debutant Shin Yamada. The South Korean winger ran past two opponents after Celtic won the ball back deep in the Bairns half, and his low ball across the goalmouth was turned into his own net by Henderson. The noisy visiting fans got a chance to celebrate three minutes later when right-back Adams arrowed a shot into the top corner from 20 yards. That ended the flurry of goals as Celtic safely navigated their way into Saturday evening's quarter-final draw and avoided any injuries ahead of their Champions League play-off first leg against Kairat Almaty on Wednesday. Liverpool edge Bournemouth in thriller to start Premier League title defence

Liverpool have got their Premier League title defence off to a winning start in thrilling fashion as they scored late to beat Bournemouth at Anfield. It looked to be a comfortable night for the Reds as they opened up a two-goal lead in the second half, but then found themselves level with the Cherries late in the game. It took an unlikely hero in Federico Chiesa to put them back ahead in the dying moments, before a more familiar goal-scorer netted a fourth. Hugo Ekitike opened his Premier League account for the Reds as he put them ahead on 37 minutes, continuing his fine start to life at Liverpool after netting in the Community Shield last weekend. The Frenchman turned provider after the break as he teed up Cody Gakpo and the Dutchman coolly curled in an effort into the bottom corner, just four minutes into the second half. Anfield was rocking by this point, with Liverpool looking very dangerous, but it was the away team that grabbed the next goal and turned the tide somewhat. Antoine Semenyo scored the goal for the Cherries just after the hour mark after a rapid and efficient break, with David Brooks putting in a brilliant ball from the left for his teammate to finish. It was a similar story just over 10 minutes later as Semenyo was the man to finish off a counter-attack again, stunning Anfield by putting Bournemouth level. The Reds were concerningly open through the middle of the pitch as the Cherries broke, with Ibrahima Konate unable to stop Semenyo on the edge of the penalty box and he fired beyond Alisson. Arne Slot's men were desperately pushing for a winner and eventually found it through substitute Chiesa who volleyed home a loose clearance inside the area on 88 minutes to delight the home fans. Mo Salah then rounded off the scoring in injury time, showing great fight and energy so late in the day to end the drama. It was an emotional evening at Anfield as tributes were paid to Diogo Jota before kick-off after his tragic death last month. More Trending While that was observed perfectly by the fans on Merseyside, there were awful scenes in the first half as Semenyo reported to the referee that he had been racially abused by a Liverpool supporter. The match was paused briefly as the referee spoke to both managers about the situation, with players on both sides showing support for the Bournemouth star. There was also controversy of a much less important kind on the field as Marcos Senesi was fortunate to avoid any punishment on 12 minutes as he appeared to handball and prevent Ekitike running in on goal from the halfway line.
