Bussi sets women's hour record for third time
Vittoria Bussi broke cycling's hour record for women for a third time on Sunday.
The Italian rider covered a distance of 50.455km on the Velodromo Bicentenario in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
The 38-year-old set the new mark after abandoning an attempt just over the halfway point on Saturday.
Bussi held the previous record having become the first woman to break the 50km barrier when she covered 50.267km on the same velodrome in October 2023.
She also held the hour record for three years from September 2018 to September 2021, when her mark of 48.007km was bettered by British rider Joss Lowden (48.405km).
Dutch rider Ellen van Dijk then covered 49.254km in May 2022, before Bussi regained the record in 2023.
"I can say with a smile that I contributed to the history of the hour record for women," said Bussi.
"This record has always been really special to me as an athlete and as a person, and I hope I have transmitted to young generations and people that sport is not just an athletic performance but that athletes bring messages to the world.
"'The hour' taught me that one of the most important things in life is to understand the preciousness of time in every single instant of our life."
The current men's record holder is Italy's Filippo Ganna, who covered 56.792km in October 2022.
Bussi is set to attempt another world record in Aguascalientes - the women's 4km individual.
The record has been lowered several times since the distance for the women's individual pursuit was increased from 3km to 4km in January, making it the same as the men's event.
British rider Anna Morris holds the current record of four minutes 24.060 seconds, set in Manchester in February.

The sandwich features warm roast pork, crispy crackling, braised red cabbage, pickled cucumber, mustard mayonnaise, and iceberg lettuce, all served on a toasted seeded white roll. It was introduced in 2024 by Ms Graves, who drew inspiration from her Danish heritage and travels to Copenhagen. The flæskesteg has attracted both guests from the area and abroad. Dani Hope and Charles Graves, fellow directors, said its success lies in offering something outside the usual British pub fare. Ms Hope said: "It's remarkable how a heritage recipe from Copenhagen has found such a warm welcome in the heart of the Lake District. "Our guests are increasingly adventurous with their food choices, and this sandwich offers something genuinely different." Its popularity reflects a wider trend in the Lake District hospitality sector to include more culturally authentic and distinctive dishes, appealing to a growing and diverse visitor base. Ferrari target 'magnificent' third straight Le Mans 24 Hour triumph
Ferrari's Formula One fortunes may be flagging but the Italian constructor start this weekend's Le Mans 24 Hour Race as favourites targeting a third consecutive triumph in motorsport's fabled endurance classic. Fiji names Salesi Rayasi for Wallabies and Scotland tests
Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Former Super Rugby winger Salesi Rayasi has been named in Fiji's 32-man squad to play Australia and Scotland in rugby tests next month. The 28-year-old played six seasons in Super Rugby for the Wellington-based Hurricanes and now plays for Vannes in France's Top 14. He played for the New Zealand sevens team before switching nations to play for Fiji, following his father Felipe who played 13 test for Fiji in the 1990s. Australia's test against Fiji at Newcastle on July 6 will be the Wallabies' only warm-up for their three-test series against the British and Irish Lions. Fiji will then play Scotland in Suva on July 12.
