Bussi sets women's hour record for third time
Vittoria Bussi broke cycling's hour record for women for a third time on Sunday. The Italian rider covered a distance of 50.455km on the Velodromo Bicentenario in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The 38-year-old set the new mark after abandoning an attempt just over the halfway point on Saturday. Bussi held the previous record having become the first woman to break the 50km barrier when she covered 50.267km on the same velodrome in October 2023. She also held the hour record for three years from September 2018 to September 2021, when her mark of 48.007km was bettered by British rider Joss Lowden (48.405km). Dutch rider Ellen van Dijk then covered 49.254km in May 2022, before Bussi regained the record in 2023. "I can say with a smile that I contributed to the history of the hour record for women," said Bussi. "This record has always been really special to me as an athlete and as a person, and I hope I have transmitted to young generations and people that sport is not just an athletic performance but that athletes bring messages to the world. "'The hour' taught me that one of the most important things in life is to understand the preciousness of time in every single instant of our life." The current men's record holder is Italy's Filippo Ganna, who covered 56.792km in October 2022. Bussi is set to attempt another world record in Aguascalientes - the women's 4km individual. The record has been lowered several times since the distance for the women's individual pursuit was increased from 3km to 4km in January, making it the same as the men's event. British rider Anna Morris holds the current record of four minutes 24.060 seconds, set in Manchester in February. Anna Morris: From doctor to cycling world champion

U.S., coalition partners sanction 15 al-Shabaab leaders
April 15 (UPI) -- The United States and a coalition of six other nations dedicated to disrupting terrorist financial networks have imposed sanctions against 15 accused leaders of the Somalia-based al-Shabaab militant group. The sanctions were announced Monday by the U.S. Treasury, which said they target members of the designated terrorist organization involved in a range of activities from fundraising to improvised explosive device proliferation. The 15 alleged terrorists are considered key regional leaders throughout Somalia and have been accused of generating funds for al-Shabaab through illegal fee collection from locals as well as conducting kidnappings, dispatching their own police service to control residents and manufacturing and placing IEDs. "Al-Shabaab continues to terrorize and extort the Somali people, forcing farmers to turn over livestock as 'donations' and kidnapping civilians, while it destabilizes the wider region through its campaign of violence," Treasury's Acting Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Anna Morris said in a statement. The sanctions are the eighth round from the Terrorist Financing Target Center, consisting of the United States, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Founded in 2017, the TFTC aims to counter terrorist financing networks through conducting joint disruption actions, including sanctions and law enforcement operations, as well as sharing information about related concerns and offering capacity-building assistance. "TFTC member states are stronger and more effective when working together to counter these shared threats to the international financial system, and we will maintain intensive pressure on terrorist actors and their financial networks," Morris said. The announcement comes after the Treasury sanctioned 26 people and entities connected with al-Shabaab.

Morris breaks own world record again to win pursuit title
Anna Morris broke her own world record for the third time in a week to win the women's 4km individual pursuit title at the British Track Championships in Manchester. The Welshwoman had broken her own record twice in one day when winning gold at last week's European Track Cycling Championships. She made it a hat-trick by shaving off more than a second to claim victory with a time of four minutes 24.060 seconds at the National Cycling Centre. "The motivation was really high, especially on my home track in front of a home crowd," she said. "I am feeling it a bit after racing at Euros, so I wasn't sure how much I had left in me, but the crowd definitely carried me in those last four laps. "I was just trying to keep my head down in that last kilometre, trying to keep pedalling as much as I could, they felt like they were giving up, but I could hear the crowd, so I just tried to hold on. "I often feel like I am living someone else's life sometimes, it is quite surreal. But I am very grateful for all the opportunities I have had." It was Morris' second victory at the championships after winning the women's scratch race on Friday.
