Four suspects remanded over cop's death
Magistrate Siti Nor Hasliza Md Ali granted the remand order from yesterday until Aug 14 to facilitate the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Clad in orange lockup attire, the suspects, aged between 24 and 26, were brought to the Alor Setar Court Complex in a van at about 8.45am under heavy police escort.
In the 3.30pm incident on Thursday, Kpl Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, 35, was run over by a vehicle with several fleeing suspects on board.
It is believed that the suspects were trying to steal a metal safe from a house in Taman Golf.
Kedah police chief Comm Adzli Abu Shah had said that Mohd Hafizul Izham died on the spot after he was struck by a sports utility vehicle.

'The victim had just stepped out of his car when he was rammed by the suspect's vehicle,' he said during a press conference.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail described the passing of Mohd Hafizul Izham as a great loss to the police and nation.
'I am deeply saddened to receive the news of his passing. He was killed in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a suspect in a criminal incident.'
Saifuddin added that Mohd Hafizul Izham had shown courage and the indomitable spirit of frontliners safeguarding the nation's security, and his fearless action in facing danger to ensure public safety is deeply appreciated and honoured.
He assured that the welfare of the late policeman's family would be given full attention, and the ministry will ensure all matters, including payments and benefits ,are channelled without delay.

PSM deputy chairman arrested over Parliament protest
KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairman S. Arutchelvan was arrested at 6pm today at the Dang Wangi police headquarters over a protest outside Parliament last week. PSM secretary-general M. Sivaranjani said Arutchelvan surrendered himself after being ordered to report to the police. "This arrest is unlawful and constitutes an abuse of police power," she told FTM. The protest on Wednesday involved more than 100 plantation workers from Perak, Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Kedah and Johor, who marched from Taman Tugu to Parliament to submit a memorandum and draft bill seeking to make it compulsory for estates to provide housing for local plantation workers. It was reported that police initially blocked the group from assembling outside the Parliament gates but later allowed them to hand the documents to Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister M. Kulasegaran and Opposition Chief Whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. A scuffle broke out at the gates, which Arutchelvan later said was a 'misunderstanding'. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus later said an investigation had been opened into a scuffle during the handover, which allegedly left a police officer injured. He said the case is being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter a public servant from carrying out his duties, and Section 427 for mischief. Fadil had also referred to a video uploaded on TikTok showing participants of the gathering "provoking and forcefully breaching" police officers on duty at Jalan Parlimen. Police had summoned Arutchelvan the following day to record his statement. Arutchelvan was reported saying that he and several rally participants had a 'misunderstanding' outside the Parliament.

Teacher to be charged over false claim Zara was put in a washing machine
KUALA LUMPUR: A TikTok account holder is expected to be charged in court tomorrow for spreading false information about the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir. The account holder, who is believed to be a teacher who operates the TikTok account 'SHA_Abrienda', is expected to be charged at the Sepang Sessions and magistrates' courts at 8.30am. The charge will be made under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, relating to statements causing public alarm or fear. Section 505(b) of the Penal Code states that anyone who makes, publishes, or circulates any statement, rumour, or report with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public, whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or public tranquillity, shall be punished with imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both. The charge relates to the dissemination of unverified claims that Zara's death was due to being placed inside a washing machine — an allegation made by the TikTok user in question. Zara Qairina, a Form One student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustapha in Sabah, was found unconscious near a drain at the school's hostel at 3am on July 16 and was pronounced dead the next day. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar, during a press conference on Aug 13, said a 39-year-old woman had been arrested in Rawang, Selangor, for allegedly spreading fake news. She was later released on police bail after her statement was recorded.

Zara Qairina case first prosecution under new anti-bullying law
KUALA LUMPUR: The case involving Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir marks the first prosecution under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed the historic legal application. He stated the amendment involving Sections 507B to 507G of the Penal Code strengthened legal provisions against acts of bullying. Saifuddin Nasution revealed that since the amendment was enforced on July 11, police had opened 11 investigation papers related to bullying. 'These investigation papers fall under Sections 507B, 507C and so on,' he said. 'This shows that the strengthening of the law has enabled the police to take action.' He made these remarks while winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan for the Home Ministry in the Dewan Rakyat. The minister was responding to a supplementary question from Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (MUDA-Muar). Syed Saddiq had raised the issue of the police's allegedly slow response in investigating bullying cases. The Penal Code (Amendment) 2025 Act and the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) 2025 Act were passed in December 2024. These acts aim to address bullying more effectively and comprehensively, including cyberbullying. Earlier today, five teenage girls were charged in the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu. They were charged with using insulting words against Zara Qairina. The charges were framed under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the Code. This section carries a penalty of up to one year's imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Saifuddin Nasution said the ministry wanted the police to act swiftly in investigating every reported case of bullying. He also reminded all parties not to play up sentiments or create inaccurate impressions. 'When I reviewed the chronology and sequence of the police investigation, with the large number of witness statements taken in detail, I also felt sad,' he said. He expressed that the police's diligence was overshadowed by one perceived failure to conduct a post-mortem. 'Aug 4 was the first time the police submitted the investigation papers to the AG (Attorney General),' he explained. 'On Aug 3, Zara's mother had lodged a police report after noticing bruises while bathing Zara's body.' He confirmed that the investigation papers submitted to the AG recommended that Zara's grave be exhumed. Zara Qairina died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital on July 17. She was found unconscious in a drain near her school hostel a day earlier. Several other ministries also wound up debates on the 13MP motion for their respective ministries. - Bernama
