Mets beat Braves 4-0, lose Griffin Canning to injury
New York Mets' Jeff McNeil (1) and Brett Baty (7) celebrate with teammates after a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves Thursday, June 26, 2025, in New York. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II) NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso had three hits and an RBI and the New York Mets overcame the loss of starting pitcher Griffin Canning to injury in the third inning Thursday night for a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves and a split of the four-game series. The Mets, who had lost 10 of 11 games before a 7-3 win over the Braves on Wednesday night, moved back into first place in the NL East, a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. Advertisement Canning worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings before suffering a left ankle injury on a non-contact play while trying to race off the mound. After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said it 'looks like an Achilles injury.' The team said he would undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury. After Canning left, four relievers limited the Braves to two hits the rest of the way. Austin Warren (1-0) replaced Canning and threw 2 1/3 one-hit innings. Tyrone Taylor lofted a sacrifice fly against Grant Holmes (4-7) in the fourth, and Alonso doubled the lead with a run-scoring hit in the fifth. Jeff McNeil added a two-run single in the seventh. Holmes allowed two runs and six hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings. Advertisement TIGERS 8, ATHLETICS 0 DETROIT (AP) — Dietrich Enns pitched five scoreless innings in his return to the majors as Detroit beat the Athletics. Enns (1-0) gave up a single and two walks in his first game since he threw two scoreless innings for the Tampa Bay Rays against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 24, 2021. The 34-year-old pitched for the Seibu Lions in Japan from 2022-23 before going 13-6 last season for the LG Twins in South Korea. Jeffrey Springs (5-6) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings. Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres homered for the Tigers while Zach McKinstry had three hits, including a double and a triple. Advertisement RAYS 4, ROYALS 0 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Shane Baz allowed three hits over a career-best eight innings, Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero hit back-to-back homers in the sixth, and Tampa Bay beat Kansas City for a three-game sweep. Baz (8-3) struck out nine and walked one. Jacob Lowe had three hits for the Rays, and Jake Mangum hit a run-scoring triple. Tampa Bay has won five of six to move a season-high 11 games above .500 (46-35) and a half-game behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees, who were off Thursday. Paul Gervase gave up singles to Jonathan India and Vinnie Pasquantino before Pete Fairbanks came on with one out in the ninth and got Maikel Garcia to ground into a 6-4-3 double play for his 15th save. Advertisement Tampa Bay starters have thrown 22 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. The Royals were also shut out on Wednesday and scored one run in their three losses to the Rays. Kansas City has gone 14-27 (.341) — third worst in the majors over that span — since starting the season 24-16 (.600). CUBS 3, CARDINALS 0 ST. LOUIS (AP) — Shota Imanaga returned from the injured list to throw five innings of one-hit ball, lifting Chicago to a victory over St. Louis for a split of a four-game series. Michael Busch homered and singled and Carson Kelly also had two hits for the NL Central-leading Cubs. St. Louis was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Five Chicago pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Advertisement A left hamstring strain cost Imanaga (4-2) nearly two months. In his Busch Stadium debut, Imanaga gave up a first-inning single to Masyn Winn and then retired 10 batters before issuing his lone walk. Imanaga, an All-Star last season as a rookie, lowered his ERA to 2.54. Daniel Palencia allowed the first to batters to reach before striking out the side in the ninth for his eighth save in nine opportunities. Busch hit a 3-2 fastball from Andre Pallante (5-4) over the wall in right field in the second inning. He scored again in the fourth when Ian Happ drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk. In the eighth, Pete Crow-Armstrong scored from third when Dansby Swanson was caught trying to steal second. Advertisement ASTROS 2, PHILLIES 1 HOUSTON (AP) — Cam Smith hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to give Houston a win over Philadelphia. The rookie's second hit of the game came off Orion Kerkering (5-3) and gave the Astros their fourth straight win. Brandon Marsh tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the inning to end the Phillies' 26-inning scoreless streak. The Astros took a 1-0 lead on Yainer Diaz's RBI single in the second inning. They only managed three more hits off Phillies starter Christopher Sanchez, who struck out 11 with zero walks over six innings. Sanchez has not issued a walk in three straight starts. Advertisement Hunter Brown lowered his league best ERA to 1.74 by scattering three singles over seven shutout innings, with nine strikeouts. He did not allow a runner to reach second base. Bryan Abreu (3-3) struck out Trea Turner to end the eighth, and then struck out Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Nick Castellanos in the ninth. Rafael Marchán had two of the Phillies' four hits. Bryson Stott reached base twice and scored the Phillies' lone run. BLUE JAYS 6, GUARDIANS 0 CLEVELAND (AP) — Kevin Gausman threw eight innings of two-hit ball, Alejandro Kirk and Nathan Lukes drove in two runs apiece and Toronto beat Cleveland to win the three-game series. Advertisement Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left the game in the third inning after being hit by a 96 mph fastball from Guardians starter Tanner Bibee. X-rays came back negative, and the team said Guerrero sustained a forearm contusion. Gausman (6-6) gave up one walk on 104 pitches with six strikeouts and reliever Chad Green finished the Guardians' fifth shutout of the season. Addison Barger led off the ninth with a single, Ernie Clement and Jonatan Clase each drew a walk to load the bases with one out and pinch-hitter Kirk's single scored Barger and Clement. Clase scored on a throwing error by left fielder Steven Kwan, one of four by Cleveland. Kwan hit in a double in the first for the Guardians, whose only other hit was single by Kyle Manzardo in the fourth. Advertisement Bibee (4-8) gave up three hits and two runs in six innings. DODGERS 3, ROCKIES 1 DENVER (AP) — Clayton Kershaw struck out five to inch closer to 3,000, Shohei Ohtani hit his 28th home run, and Los Angeles beat Colorado. Kershaw (4-0) struck out five in six innings for his fourth straight win and has 2,997 strikeouts over his 18-year career — three short of becoming the 20th major leaguer and the third active pitcher to reach 3,000. Ohtani's 419-foot homer to right-center gave the Dodgers a 3-1 lead in the seventh. Mookie Betts had two hits and an RBI and Freddie Freeman had an RBI single for the Dodgers, who have won 10 in a row against the Rockies — six this season. Advertisement The Dodgers, who trailed 1-0 after Brenton Doyle homered off Kershaw in the second, had their major league-high 31st comeback victory. Tanner Scott pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 21 chances. MARLINS 12, GIANTS 5 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Kyle Stowers and Agustín Ramírez each homered and Miami beat San Francisco to complete a three-game series sweep. Xavier Edwards had a two-run double for Miami, which has won four straight overall, five of six, and six straight on the road. Rafael Devers had three hits including a homer and a double for San Francisco, which has lost eight of its last 11. Devers' homer was his 17th and his second in nine games since being acquired by San Francisco last week. Advertisement The Marlins broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth on Eric Wagaman's two-run double in a three-run inning. Stowers hit a three-run homer in the first and Ramírez hit a two-run shot in the third — both off Giants starter Hayden Birdsong — to give Miami a 5-0 lead. Devers hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and the Giants tied it in the fourth when June Hoo Lee's leadoff triple keyed a three-run inning. Birdsong (3-2) allowed seven runs and four hits with four walks in four-plus innings. TWINS 10, MARINERS 1 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Trevor Larnach homered with three RBIs after Simeon Woods Richardson started with five scoreless innings, and Minnesota beat Seattle after a rain delay of 4 hours and 22 minutes. Advertisement Brooks Lee led off an eight-run sixth against reliever Zach Pop with a home run. Then came RBI doubles from Byron Buxton and Willi Castro, a two-run single by Carlos Correa and a two-run homer from Matt Wallner in the highest-scoring inning for the Twins since a nine-run outburst in the first at New York on April 13, 2023. Woods Richardson (3-4) produced a superb follow-up to the six scoreless innings Joe Ryan threw in a 2-0 victory on Wednesday, helping the Twins (39-42) win consecutive games for the first time since taking three straight from June 3-5. They lost 15 of 18 after that. Emerson Hancock (3-4) started with four scoreless innings for the Mariners before Larnach's two-run shot in the fifth. Mariners catcher Mitch Garver left in the fifth inning when Wallner fouled a ball off his mask, forcing star Cal Raleigh to finish behind the plate in forfeiture of the designated hitter.

San Francisco Unicorns drive cricket's popularity in Bay Area
The Bay Area's new cricket team has started hot after a 5-0 win over the Seattle Orcas on Wednesday night. It comes as the San Francisco Unicorns play their first season in the Major League Cricket league. Inside a Pleasanton training facility, cricket means fast balls, flat bats, and a sport chirping its way into America's lineup. "I fell in love with the sport when I saw my dad playing with his friends. So I gave it a shot," said 23-year-old Vatsal Vaghela of the San Ramon Grizzlies, a minor-league club with major momentum. He's what's known as a bowler—think baseball pitcher, except here the ball bounces off the ground first. "Like everyone who plays minor league, has that dream of playing at the highest level and minor leagues probably one of the best ways to just put yourself out there," Vaghela said. He's not the only one with big-league dreams. Shreyak Porecha, 14, plays on the Grizzlies' junior squad, part of a growing pipeline of fresh talent. "The energy it's the passion. It's the competitive environment," Porecha said. Major League Cricket is only in its third season, but it's quickly gaining ground. With billions of people worldwide tuning in, the U.S. isn't just catching up, it's catching on. This summer, the league takes its biggest swing yet: the Oakland Coliseum, once home to the A's, is hosting its first-ever top-tier cricket match. Although it may look like a cross between baseball and golf, you quickly find out it's a whole other ball game. David Haubert, Board Director for USA Cricket, believes the sport, second only to soccer worldwide, could give the 63,000-seat stadium a second life. "Every year is going to get a little bigger or a little better. We do expect to fill up the stadium," Haubert said. With the San Francisco Unicorns — the Bay Area's first pro cricket team — in the mix, the sport is getting a shot in the arm and a serious boost where it counts, said Grizzlies co-owner Samir Shah. Baseball may be America's pastime. But if fans have their way, cricket might just be its future, Samir Shah said. "They're playing to perfection," he said.

2025 NBA Draft best players available for Round 2
The first round of the 2025 NBA Draft wrapped with Cooper Flagg going No. 1 to the Dallas Mavericks as expected, two of his Duke teammates also selected in the lottery, and the Brooklyn Nets making a league-record five first-round picks. That leaves Thursday's second and final round with plenty of prospects still available. Here's a look at some of the top names remaining from our Big Board. Update: The Milwaukee Bucks drafted Marković with the 17th pick in Round 2 Marković is a modern stretch forward who also offers skill as a passer and post scorer. But to handle the rigors of the NBA and become a positive defender, he needs to add a ton of muscle. Sallis is a poised, efficient scorer with body control, defensive tenacity and the passing feel to hint at more upside. If the jumper proves real, he could play a much larger offensive role than his current projection. Update: The Orlando Magic drafted Penda with the second pick in Round 2 Penda plays with a veteran's mind and a winning mentality, offering connective playmaking, switchable defense and high-level feel. He'll need to improve his jumper to stick long term, but his unselfish game and defensive utility give him a strong foundation. Update: The Sacramento Kings drafted Raynaud with the 12th pick in Round 2 Raynaud has leveled up every year at Stanford, turning into a player who pops 3s, slashes to the rim with a smooth handle and makes eye-popping passes. As a talented passer who also offers solid defense, there's little reason to think the Frenchman won't carve out an NBA role. Update: The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Thiero with the sixth pick in Round 2 Thiero is a slasher with a jacked frame and an explosive first step, but he has severe limitations on offense as a shooter. If he's able to figure out the shot then his length and versatility would make him a classic 3-and-D role player. Update: The Charlotte Hornets drafted Kalkbrenner with the fourth pick in Round 2 Kalkbrenner is a throwback 7-footer who owns the paint, swatting shots with his giant wingspan and dunking everything in sight. It's a bit strange he isn't a better rebounder. But as a super senior, he's also developed some sneaky passing and shooting skills that hint at higher upside. Update: The Memphis Grizzlies drafted Small with the 18th pick in Round 2 Small is an undersized guard who plays bigger than his body, thanks to his excellent athleticism and gritty nature. He's a knockdown shooter off the catch and a solid lead guard, though his lack of size puts a natural cap on his upside. Update: The Utah Jazz drafted Tonje with the 23rd pick in Round 2 Tonje will enter the NBA at age 24 with some readymade skills as an off-ball movement scorer and shooter. But his athletic ceiling and defense will determine if he's more than just a backup. NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - MARCH 29: Tyrese Proctor #5 of the Duke Blue Devils reacts against the Alabama Crimson Tide during the second half in the East Regional Elite Eight round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Prudential Center on March 29, 2025 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by) (Patrick Smith via Getty Images) Update: The Cleveland Cavaliers drafted Proctor with the 19th pick of Round 2 Proctor is a tall combo guard with great passing vision who was expected to go one-and-done but has taken until his junior year to look ready for the NBA. At this point, he's sharpened his jumper and become an even better defender. Dixon is a burly forward who brings a toughness and physicality to the game. As Villanova's all-time leading scorer, he showed versatile scoring skills, but in the NBA his lack of athleticism will put a limit on the type of usage he can receive. Advertisement Nembhard is an excellent floor general who excels in pick-and-roll situations and made great progress as a scorer during his senior year. But with his small stature, the younger brother of Andrew Nembhard has natural limitations that put a cap on his upside. Update: The Washington Wizards drafted Watkins with the 13th pick of Round 2 Watkins is a versatile player who can run the show, slash to the paint and switch across positions on defense. But the development of his jumper is stuck in quicksand, which raises questions about his ability to excel in a less prominent on-ball role. Update: The Phoenix suns drafted Fleming with the first pick of Round 2 Fleming is a hustler who drains spot-up jumpers and brings energy on defense, swatting shots and snagging boards. But he has some real warts as a ball-handler with a lack of experience against high-level competition, so teams will have to feel real confident his role-player skill set will translate. Update: The Detroit Pistons drafted Lanier with the seventh pick of Round 2 Lanier transferred to Tennessee after four years at North Florida and immediately thrived as a knockdown shooter with shot-making creativity. But without great size or playmaking at his age, he's a second-round prospect. Update: The Toronto Raptors drafted Martin with the ninth pick of Round 2 Martin is a hyper-athletic, high-energy guard who plays bigger than his size and impacts the game with his toughness, rebounding and defensive grit. But his positional tweener status, streaky shooting and limited creation ability complicate his path to carve out a specialized role. Update: The Phoenix Suns drafted Brea with the 11th pick of Round 2 Brea projects as a shooting specialist who has a clear path to becoming a rotation player because of his highly sought after skill. But in order to avoid being a weak link on defense, he'll need to make improvements to his athleticism. Update: The Indiana Pacers drafted Jones with the eighth pick of Round 2 Jones offers crafty combo guard skills with advanced shot creation and a blossoming playmaking feel. But his so-so athleticism and streaky shooting paint him as just a cog rather than the rare star upperclassmen set to enter the league. Update: The Philadelphia 76ers drafted Broome with the fifth pick of Round 2 Broome is a super senior who brings a ready-made game as an interior finisher with a passing feel and tone-setting defense. But his shaky jumper hasn't progressed as much as NBA teams would hope. Update: The Charlotte Hornets drafted James with the third pick of Round 2 James is a versatile defender who sets a tone with his hustle, and after years of laying bricks he's worked hard to become a dead-eye, spot-up shooter. He brings much more than shooting as a crafty playmaker who keeps the ball moving. But without the handle of a primary creator, it's critical he sustains his newfound success as a shooter. Micah Peavy, G/F, Georgetown Update: The New Orleans Pelicans drafted Peavy with the 10th pick of Round 2 Peavy is a switchable wing stopper with NBA-ready defense, instincts and passing feel. If his improved jumper proves real, he's a rotation-level player for a decade.
