Cade Klubnik, Caleb Downs among early favorites for college football's top awards
Fred Biletnikoff Award: Jeremiah Smith
Few young receivers have generated as much hype as Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, who comes off a dominant freshman season. Smith led the Buckeyes with 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024, finishing ahead of first-round pick Emeka Egbuka.
The No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class delivered for the Buckeyes throughout their national title run, connecting with quarterback Will Howard for 381 yards and five touchdowns in the postseason. At 6-foot-4 with excellent hands and elite route running capabilities, it's hard to keep the ball out of Smith's hands.
Jim Thorpe Award: Caleb Downs
Two years into his collegiate career, accolades are stacking up for Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. The preseason first-team AP All-American was an immediate standout for the Buckeyes after spending his freshman season at Alabama.
Downs was named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year after finishing the season with 82 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and six pass break-ups. He was critical to the championship run, consistently locking down threats in the passing and running games. He held tight end and eventual first-round draft pick Tyler Warren to four catches for 47 yards in Ohio State's 20-13 win over Penn State and picked off Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the CFP semifinal.
Chuck Bednarik Award: Dylan Stewart
After a breakout freshman campaign, South Carolina's Dylan Stewart is poised to lead the Gamecocks' defense in 2025.
Stewart earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team after recording 23 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, four quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a pass breakup. The edge rusher who can also drop into coverage put together one of the best freshman defensive campaigns in South Carolina since Jadeveon Clowney.
Though Downs will likely make a strong case, the Bednarik Award has yet to be given to a safety in its 30 years of existence. Stewart is one of just seven sophomores on the watch list for the award.
Doak Walker Award: Jeremiyah Love
Love is widely considered the top returning running back after playing an integral role in Notre Dame's best season since 1988. The six-foot, 214-pound running back finished the season with 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns on 163 carries, averaging 70.3 yards per game, 8.5 yards per carry and at least one score in each of the first 13 games.
As Notre Dame undergoes a quarterback shift in 2025, Love could see even more opportunities to carry the offense, putting the preseason AP All-American in prime position to take home the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back.
Outland Trophy: Spencer Fano
The Outland Trophy is awarded to the best interior lineman in college football. Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. earned the award in 2024, marking back-to-back Outland Trophy wins for the Longhorns after T'Vondre Sweat won in 2023.
We expect the award to stay on the offensive side of the ball in 2025 and Utah's Spencer Fano is a player to watch. He led FBS offensive tackles in 2024 with a 92.7 PFF grade, allowing just two quarterback hits and one sack through 424 pass-block attempts. Fano held his opponents to zero sacks through the last 11 games of the season.
The preseason AP All-American has shown versatility, lining up on the right and left sides, and seems a good bet to be a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft.
Heisman Trophy: Cade Klubnik
The most prestigious award in college football is likely to return to the hands of a quarterback in 2025. Arch Manning, Garrett Nussmeier and Cade Klubnik headline early Heisman conversations and possess the best odds heading into the season.
Klubnik has the experience Manning lacks, the mobility Nussmeier strives for and enough consistency in the receiving room to hit the ground running in 2025.
The Clemson quarterback comes off an impressive 2024-2025 campaign, completing 63.4% of passes for 3,639 yards, 36 touchdowns and six interceptions. A dual-threat, he added 463 yards and seven touchdowns on foot. His 36 touchdowns ranked behind only Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, who were both selected in the 2025 NFL draft.
Clemson landed at No. 4 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll. If Klubnik can measure up to high expectations, the Tigers could have their first Heisman winner since Trevor Lawrence.

Pirates call up Bubba Chandler, baseball's top pitching prospect

The Pittsburgh Pirates have decided to promote 22-year-old right hander Bubba Chandler ahead of their game Friday against the Colorado Rockies, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the roster move was not yet official. Chandler will join a staff that already includes 2024 NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes. The Pirates are shuffling their pitching rotation after sending veteran left-hander Andrew Heaney to the bullpen last weekend. John Wall announces retirement from the NBA after 11 seasons, will join Amazon Prime Video as an analyst
Washington Wizards superstar John Wall is calling it a career. Wall announced his retirement from the NBA on Tuesday in a video thanking his fans, family and teammates for their support during his 11 years as a player. Wall said he's leaving the game with no regrets, saying, "I gave this game everything I had." Near the end of his retirement video, Wall mentioned that basketball will always be part of his life, and mentioned that "new opportunities" led him to take on the next chapter of his life. On Wednesday, NBA on Prime announced that Hall would join the team as an analyst. Amazon Prime Video will broadcast NBA games every Friday night, with additional weekly national games on the platform on Thursday and Saturday starting midseason. Wall rose to prominence as a high schooler, receiving an invite to the Reebok All-American Camp as a sophomore. He continued to show out during high school and entered college as one of the top-ranked players in the country. That ranking turned out to be accurate. Wall spent just one season at the University of Kentucky before going pro. He entered the 2010 NBA Draft, where the Wizards made him the No. 1 overall pick. He more than lived up to that promise early in his career. Wall averaged 16.4 points as a rookie, finishing second in the Rookie of the Year award voting. He put up similar production in each of his next two seasons before taking a step forward in his fourth year. Wall averaged 19.3 points and 8.8 assists during the 2013-14 NBA season, earning his first All-Star appearance. It was his first of five straight appearances in the All-Star Game. Wall also earned recognition for his defense during the 2014-15 season, making second-team All-Defense. He notched a seventh-place finish in the MVP voting during the 2016-17 season after averaging a career-high 23.1 points and 10.7 assists. He was off to a similarly strong start during the 2018-19 season before injuries struck. Wall was limited to just 32 games that season. During the offseason, Wall fell at home, rupturing his Achilles. He missed the entire 2019-20 NBA season recovering. He returned to action with the Houston Rockets in 2020-21, and still produced strong numbers before again missing time due to injuries. The Rockets, intent on developing younger players, reached an agreement with Wall in which the veteran would not play for the team. Both sides eventually settled on a buyout, but Wall did not play the entire year. Wall signed with the Los Angeles Clippers ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season. He averaged 11.4 points in 34 games before he was traded back to the Rockets and waived three days later. Prior to his injuries, Wall was one of the league's premier players. He had incredible speed and court vision and looked capable of carrying the Wizards to great things. But injuries cut his prime short and — eventually — sapped Wall's effectiveness.

Tiger Woods to lead group that could reshape the PGA Tour's competitive model
ATLANTA (AP) — Tiger Woods is a major player in golf again, this time without clubs. He was appointed Wednesday to chair a new committee charged with taking a fresh look at the competitive model for how the PGA Tour runs its tournaments. Brian Rolapp, three weeks into his role as the tour's first CEO, announced the nine-member 'Future Competition Committee' and said it would have a clean sheet to consider changes that uphold traditions without being tied to them. 'This is about shaping the next era of the PGA Tour,' Woods said in a social media post. Rolapp didn't have details on several issues he faces as he takes over for Commissioner Jay Monahan, including the future of a sport that has been splintered by Saudi money that created the rival LIV Golf League and lured away a number of top players. The PGA Tour's negotiations with the Public Investment Fund have stalled, and Rolapp did not make that sound as if it were a top priority when asked about the fans' desire to see all the best players together more often. 'I'm going to focus on what I can control,' Rolapp said. "I would offer to you that the best collection of golfers in the world are on the PGA Tour. I think there's a bunch of metrics that demonstrate that, from rankings to viewership to whatever you want to pick. I'm going to lean into that and strengthen that. 'I will also say that to the extent we can do anything that's going to further strengthen the PGA Tour, we'll do that,' he said. 'And I'm interested in exploring whatever strengthens the PGA Tour.' Woods, who has played only 10 times on the PGA Tour since his February 2021 car crash and has been out all of this year with a ruptured Achilles tendon, already serves on the PGA Tour board without a term limit. Now he will lead five players from the board — Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy and Keith Mitchell — along with three from the business side. That includes baseball executive Theo Epstein. Rolapp is not trying to reinvent a sport that held its first championship in 1860. He said among his early observations, after two decades at the NFL, was the strength and momentum of the PGA Tour. 'My key takeaway when you boil all this down is that the strength of the PGA Tour is strong, but there's much more we need to do, much more we need to change for the benefit of fans, players and our partners,' he said. He said the committee would be guided by parity (he conceded golf already has that), scarcity and simplicity. The tour released a 2026 schedule on Tuesday that adds another $20 million signature event, this one to Trump National Doral, as part of a 35-event schedule from January through August. Rolapp said the simplicity was mostly about connecting the regular season to the postseason. He referred to the committee's work as a 'holistic relook of how we compete on the tour' during the regular season, postseason and offseason. 'The goal is not incremental change,' he said. 'The goal is significant change.' He did not set a timetable for any of it. The Tour Championship ends this week at East Lake for the top 30 players. The tour has eliminated the built-in advantage for top seeds so that everyone starts from scratch. The committee is a smaller version of the PGA Tour Enterprises board and policy board. Joining Epstein from the business side are board chairman Joe Gorder and John Henry of Fenway Sports Group, who leads the Strategic Sports Group that invested $1.5 billion — with the potential to double that — into the tour in a minority investment announced 18 months ago. Rolapp said he had a lot of ideas how to the use the money but none he was ready to share. But he said the involvement of SSG was a big reason he took the job. "Not only does it provide necessary capital as we work through this competitive model and improved commercial model, I also think it also brings learnings from other sports, which I think is beneficial ... to grow the PGA Tour. 'I think outside perspective is always a very good thing, as long as it's applied in the right way. I think SSG has brought that and has been helpful." ___ AP golf:
