Row erupts after TMC song played at state Independence Day event
Bengal BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said, 'On a day when PM Modi delivered a strong speech on infiltration, our CM used TMC's political slogan imported from Bangladesh.'
TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar hit back, saying if Khela Hobe cannot be used in India because of its Bangladeshi origin then people may use the same logic to raise questions about 'Saare Jahan Se Achha'.
At an I-Day event, the CM attacked the Centre, saying: 'Despite India having achieved Independence 78 years ago, the people are not truly independent under the rule of fascist BJP.'

Catholic priest's presence at RSS event in Pala raises eyebrows
At a time when the Catholic Church in Kerala has been voicing concern over attacks on Christians in central and northern States of India, the participation of a priest from the Pala diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church at an event of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has raised a few eyebrows. Father George Nellikunnu Cherivu Purayidom, director of Care Homes project under the Pala diocese and Deepika Friends Club, presided over Shankholi 2025, a student summit jointly organised by the Poonjar, Meenachil and Ramapuram units of the RSS on August 15. Addressing the gathering, Father Purayidom said that it was the generation inspired by India's spiritual heritage and the freedom struggle that went on to shape modern India. Today's younger generation must strive to project the nation's glory on the world stage, making effective use of organisation and technology. The keynote address at the summit was delivered by Desheeya Adhyapaka Parishat State vice-president Jigi Mash. However, the event has already raised a few eyebrows within the Catholic Church, especially in the wake of recent attacks on nuns and priests from Kerala in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, allegedly by Sangh Parivar activists. 'This only reflects how sections of the Catholic clergy remain insensitive to the sufferings of their fellow believers in BJP-ruled states,' observed another priest, reacting to the priest's presence. The instance has also triggered debates on social media and within the Catholic community. When contacted, Fr. Purayidom clarified that he had attended the event with the knowledge of Pala Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt. 'I decided to attend since the programme was related to Independence Day. I went there on the organisers' invitation and delivered a speech on the theme of the event. There is no need to misconstrue this in any other way,' he explained. Commenting on the issue, Fr. Jhoseph Thadathil, Vicar General of the diocese, maintained that the priest must have attended the event in his personal capacity. 'The diocese, as a matter of principle, does not interfere in the affairs of any political organisation, nor does it extend support to any. The diocese has nothing to do with the event, even if the said priest attended it,' he clarified.

Historic T-55 tank ‘Shivashakti' now in Ranebennur
The historic T-55 war tank 'Shivashakti', which was used in the historic Indo-Pak war for Bangladesh liberation will now be on public display in Ranebennur of Haveri district. The historic tank will now be on display permanently before the Mini Vidhana Soudha in Ranebennur, thanks to the interest taken by Ranebennur MLA Prakash Koliwad. During the Independence Day celebration on Friday, Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly U.T. Khader unveiled the tank. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prakash Koliwad said: 'The display of the war tank is a way of honouring the brave soldiers, who led the tank in the war field. It is also aimed at inspiring the youngsters and sensitising them about country's military power'. Speaker U.T. Khader termed the installation of the tank at Ranebennur as a matter of pride for the whole State. 'It inspires the younger generation to know more about the history our military and take pride in it'. He also called on everyone to understand the history and be patriotic and contribute towards nation building. History During the Indo-Pak war in 1965, the necessity of armored fighting vehicles was felt by the Indian Army. Therefore, the Indian government approached European countries for the supply of battle tanks. The T-55 tank was procured during the period 1966-77. It was the main battle tank at that period of time and as per the prevailing policy, it was to have a life of 15 years with one mid-life overhaul. This T55 tank was procured from Russia during the war between Indo-Pak for Bangla liberation in 1971, named Shivashakti and it helped army men to succeed in their mission and to achieve victory. Shivashakti belongs to assault regiment of Indian Army and has been procured from the Central Army Fighting Vehicle Depot at Kirkee in Pune (Maharashtra). The tank has been installed in Ranebennur utilising ₹15 lakh released from the MLA's local area development fund and ₹9.85 lakh from the municipal grants.

In a message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the Prime Minister said he deeply values the joint commitment to forging even closer ties between India and Ukraine. ''We earnestly wish our friends in Ukraine a future marked by peace, progress and prosperity,'' Prime Minister Modi said while replying to the congratulatory message sent by the Ukrainian President on India's 79th Independence Day. Earlier the Ukrainian President had in his congratulatory message expressed the hope that India will contribute to the efforts aimed at ending the war so that the freedom and sovereignty of Ukrainians are truly secure. He expressed confidence that the potential for mutually-beneficial India-Ukraine cooperation in science, technology, trade and culture lies ahead. Referring to his telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Modi before the Alaska Summit President Zelenskyy said they had a ''good, candid conversation'' when he had the opportunity to personally convey his best wishes on the occasion. He said both nations share the experience of standing up for freedom and dignity as well as the pursuit of peace and development.
