Weekly subscriptions dominate iOS app revenue, report finds

Weekly subscriptions have now become one of the most popular ways iOS apps are earning revenue, with these plans contributing 46% to the bottom line, according to a new report by app revenue management platform Adapty. The study, which observed $1.9 billion in revenue across more than 11,000 apps, noted that weekly plans have grown by 9.5% this year compared to one-time purchases, which grew by 6.3% in the first quarter. Other paid plans, including monthly, yearly, and lifetime subscriptions, dipped in growth. Adapty said that prices of weekly plans have also increased along with the growth. Average weekly subscription prices in the EU and the U.S. have grown 12.2% and 12.5% respectively to $8.3 and $8.1. In comparison, monthly and annual plans have seen mixed growth in different regions. App makers like Spotify and Canva have experimented with weekly plans in multiple markets. The report noted that the U.S. is leading with 48.9% of contributions to in-app purchases, with Europe in second place with a 24.8% contribution. It also said that U.S. installs bring 3-4 times more revenue than installs from other regions. In all regions, weekly plans were the top contributors to revenue. Most notably, these plans generated 60% of revenue in LATAM, followed by 53% in MEA. In Europe, while weekly plans were the biggest money driver, they had a share of 38%. There is a downside to the rise in weekly plans as it becomes harder for apps to retain users after a few weeks. 'What accelerates growth also limits lifetime value. Weekly plans thrive in burst-use categories, like utilities or quick productivity tools, where users pay for immediate value but rarely stay. Retention drops sharply after day 30, and only single-digit percentages remain after a year. That churn curve quietly erodes marketing ROI,' Appfigures founder and CEO Ariel Michaeli said in the report. The report noted that weekly plans drive better lifetime value from consumers in categories like productivity and utility. However, in categories such as Health & Fitness and Photo & Video, annual plans drive value. Adapty also said that developers offering trials before providing a subscription saw positive results, with app makers seeing 64% and 58% increases in lifetime value in the U.S. and Europe, respectively. Apple is facing regulatory pressure to change its App Store model thanks to rulings in both the U.S. and the EU. However, Adapty thinks that we might not see immediate effects. 'We've spoken with some of the biggest players in the space, and honestly, there's no major shift toward third-party payments yet. The drop in conversion tends to cancel out most of the upside. There's also talk that Apple might lower its cut to 15-20% globally, and if that happens, the value of going external gets a lot harder to justify,' Vitaly Davydov, CEO of Adapty, said. Meta Just Poached More Top AI Talent. Should You Buy META Stock Here?

Meta's (META) hiring spree to create a super AI team has led it to recruit talent from OpenAI and Anthropic, with the headline $14.3 billion acquisition of data-labeling company Scale AI perhaps being the most noteworthy. Now, the owner of social media giants such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook has come knocking on the doors of Apple (AAPL). According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Ruoming Pang, the head of AI models at Apple, is leaving the company to join Meta for a compensation package reported to be more than a cool $200 million. Pang was responsible for several elements of Apple Intelligence and other on-device features at the iPhone maker. Before Apple, he was also at Google (GOOGL). Tired of missing midday reversals? The FREE Barchart Brief newsletter keeps you in the know. Sign up now! This is an interesting move by Meta. Apple has been a known laggard in artificial intelligence, a key reason for its dismal share price performance in 2025. However, Pang's credentials are impressive, and at Meta, he may be able to seriously move the needle. But what does this latest move mean for the Meta stock, which is already up 24% on a YTD basis? Let's find out. Pang's addition to Zuckerberg's 'AI Avengers' only reinforces the Meta CEO's strategic focus on AI as he remains convinced that this revolutionary tech will be the next growth driver for his company, as I highlighted in a recent article. Further, Meta's ongoing push into AI is already showing up in user behavior across its key platforms. Time spent is climbing, with Facebook showing growth of 7%, Instagram 6%, and Threads by a much higher 35%. These increases closely track the company's use of AI to refine what users see, making content more engaging. At the same time, the global average price per ad has gone up by 10%, signalling that advertisers are recognizing better returns, possibly due to the improved targeting these algorithms now offer. Notably, Meta also rolled out its dedicated Meta AI app. It's intended to add more nuance to user experience through voice interaction, personalized responses, and content that feels more tailored to individual tastes. This fits in well with Zuckerberg's broader strategy of building Meta AI into a dominant assistant, an ambition that doesn't appear far-fetched, thanks to Meta's access to vast pools of user data from across its ecosystem, There's also a clear rationale for the sharp increase in capital expenditures linked to AI. The company believes it can boost advertising precision, deliver richer interactions, and increase Meta AI's reach as it moves toward fully automating the ad lifecycle by 2026. If that happens, it would represent a structural shift in how campaigns are created and deployed, requiring less human input and more AI oversight. Interestingly, it's not just software. More vigorous integration of AI into the company's hardware products, such as its Ray-Ban augmented reality/virtual reality glasses, can drive a new structural shift that may threaten the hegemony of the smartphone. Meta has not compromised on its financials, despite an aggressive push in acquisitions and innovation. Meta has consistently delivered strong financial results. Over the past ten years, the company has grown both revenue and earnings at compound annual growth rates of 29% and 37%, respectively. Moreover, the company has now reported earnings that exceeded expectations for nine quarters in a row. In the latest quarter, Q1 2025, Meta posted revenue of $42.3 billion, reflecting a 16% increase over the same period a year ago. Earnings rose even more sharply. Profit per share came in at $6.43, representing a 37% jump from the prior year and beating the consensus estimate of $5.24. This was accompanied by an expansion in operating margins, which improved to 41% from 38% in the comparable period. Cash flow performance was similarly solid. Net cash from operating activities amounted to $24.03 billion, compared to $19.25 billion in the previous year. The company ended the quarter with $30.1 billion in cash and equivalents, further reinforcing its financial strength. For Q2 2025, Meta expects revenue to fall within a range of $42.5 billion to $45.5 billion. The midpoint of this guidance suggests a year-over-year growth of 12.6%. However, management did revise its full-year outlook slightly downward, now forecasting total revenue between $113 billion and $118 billion, compared with the earlier projection of $114 billion to $119 billion. Overall, analysts remain convinced about Meta's prospects. Hence, they have assigned a consensus rating of 'Strong Buy' with a mean target price of $731.50. Although this denotes limited upside potential, the high target price of $935 implies upside potential of about 30% from current levels. Out of 54 analysts covering the stock, 45 have a 'Strong Buy' rating, three have a 'Moderate Buy' rating, five have a 'Hold' rating, and one has a 'Strong Sell' rating. First AI data supercluster going online in 2026, Zuckerberg says

July 14 (UPI) -- Meta will invest in "hundreds of billions of dollars" in artificial intelligence with the world's first supercluster online next year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Monday. Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads, is significantly boosting its expenditures on AI. "For our superintelligence effort, I'm focused on building the most elite and talent-dense team in the industry," Zuckerberg posted on Facebook. "We're also going to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into computing to build superintellitence. We have the capital from our business to do it." In April, Meta raised its 2025 capital expenditure forecast to between $64 billion and $72 billion, primarily on data centers and servers, as well as growing its AI teams. One year ago it was a high of $40 billion. Last month, Meta spent $114 billion for a stake in Scale AI and brought in CEO Alexandr Wang. Also in June, he formed a new organization called Meta Superintelligenc of top AI researchers and engineers. Meta would be the first lab to bring online a supercluster of 1 gigawatt, or one billion watts, to train advanced AI models and handle the workloads, according to SemiAnalysis. A gigawatt is enough to power as many 800,000 homes for a full year. "Meta Superintelligence Labs will have industry-leading levels of compute and by far the greatest compute per researcher," Zuckerberg posted on Facebook. "I'm looking forward to working with the top researchers to advance the frontier." The first supercluster will be called Prometheus and will be built in New Albany, Ohio, south of Columbus, using gas turbines. Another cluster, called Hyperion, will be able to scale up to 5 gigawatts in Richland Parish in northeast Louisiana. It will take until 2030 to be fully built out at 4 million square feet. "We're building multiple more titan clusters, as well," he said. "Just one of these covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan." Meta is attempting to break away from a reliance on third-party companies to power their business, including Apple and Google app store regulations. Zuckerberg wants to compete against Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Amazon-backed Anthropic, Google and Perplexity. The company's debut of Llama 4 AI models in April drew lukewarm response from developers, CNBC reported. Meta hopes Superintelligence Labs will drive revenue through the Meta AI app, ad tools and smart glasses, Wall Street Pit reported. Meta's stock rose 1.01% to 724.76 at midday Monday.
