Three young Aussies die in gruesome camping trip tragedy
Australia continues to grapple with a skyrocketing rate of road fatalities with another three young lives lost on Sunday afternoon when the 4WD the trio were in struck a tree while they were travelling home from a weekend camping trip.
Friends Chloe Websdale, 23, Joshua Cox, 26, and Kyle Retallack, 27, lost their lives on Brookton Highway in Lesley, situated 40 kilometres southeast of Perth. It was around 3pm when the white Nissan Patrol collided with the tree and all three passengers "suffered significant injuries and died at the scene", Western Australian Police said.
"The scenes that the first responders had to respond to were things that they'll probably never forget in their careers," acting Commissioner Mike Peters said.
It reportedly took up to three hours for emergency services to free the trio from the car.
Police have commenced an investigation as it is unclear what caused the crash. However, they were reportedly not speeding, and all three were wearing their seatbelts.
Caleb Cox paid tribute to his brother Joshua online saying he was "so grateful for the time we had together in this lifetime, I will forever cherish every moment".
"Words can't describe how I'm feeling," he said. "Keep the bevies cold and have em ready to go for when I get there."
Friends of Kyle told The West Australian he was a "lovely bloke" who was "kind-hearted" and "one of the most caring people", while Chloe's cricket teammates said she would be "greatly missed".

Seven people lost their lives on WA roads last weekend, with a 16-year-old and 17-year-old dying near Roebourne when their off-road motorbike collided with a ute earlier on Sunday.
On Friday evening, 18-year-old Seb Foufas lost his life while travelling as a passenger in a ute that flipped on a dirt track, while a 32-year-old was killed at Allanson in the state's south.
Commissioner Peters told media police are out patrolling highways "every single day" and admitted, "I don't know what else to do", as the state — and country — continues to be crippled by the growing death toll.
Authorities are cracking down on driving offences and dangerous driving in a desperate bid to reduce the alarming road death statistics, with a 10-year plan launched in a bid to reduce the number of road deaths.
Last year was the deadliest year on Aussie rods since 2012, with 79 road deaths in February alone, according to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) data.

Man 'attacked' as tensions flare with van-dwellers
A campaigner has been "attacked" as tensions continue to escalate with a van-dwelling community. During filming on Tuesday, a BBC camera was struck by a van-dweller as Tony Nelson, who founded a group calling for the vehicles to be removed, was interviewed. Mr Nelson had attempted to speak to a man living in a van at Durdham Down in Bristol, where around 107 vehicles are parked, believed to be one of the largest van-dwelling sites in the UK. The man accused Mr Nelson of spreading "hate and violence" against van-dwellers, and said the two groups were "well past talking to each other" before reportedly pushing him. However, some residents say they are now too scared to go out at night and have complained about increased litter. Callum has been living in a van on the Downs for nine months. After a house share with friends ended, he said he did not have enough money to put down a deposit on a rental flat and was "lucky" to find the vehicle. But when residents in the area formed a group calling for van-dwellers to be removed from the area, Callum said it had "an emotional effect". "As much as I kind of see their side, it's a lot of weight on us. "People are tooting their horns, revving their engines. If this was your home, would you want someone to come and disturb your sleep and your life in that way? "It would be nice if they just left us alone, if we're not doing any direct harm to anyone up here, I don't see why we shouldn't be allowed to stay," he said. Living rent-free had allowed Callum to drop down his hours working in hospitality and retrain as a joiner, he said. And now he has a new job, he said he and his partner were looking for a flat. Callum is one of 107 vehicle dwellers who Bristol City Council estimates live on the Downs. Mr Nelson, who founded the Facebook group Protect the Downs, believes living in a van had become a "lifestyle choice". His group, which has nearly 2,000 members, has called for the council to use its powers to remove vans and those living in them. Mr Nelson said: "People really feel very strongly about the council's inaction, their permissiveness, their saying 'it's OK to come and trash our parks'. "People are fed up with that. I don't know if it's council incompetence or whatever." He wants the council to help those who need it, and move others on. Bristol City Council (BCC) said it was choosing not to move people on as this would simply result in "moving people from one part of the city to the other". "Every inch of this city is important and special to somebody", said councillor Barry Parsons, who chairs the Homes and Housing Delivery Committee. The council has previously shut down other encampments - once they were deemed to have had too great an impact on the area. BBC News was told the current impact on the Downs was assessed to be at a "medium" level, which meant it did not meet the threshold for intervention. Nevertheless, Mr Parsons said it was "unfair" to claim the council had done nothing, as it had developed a new policy that will be in place "by the end of the year". "I can understand why people are feeling anxious and frustrated. "We're trying to do something really new, that hasn't been tried before, here or anywhere else in the country", he said. There are proposals to provide kerbside "service sites", where people living in vans could dispose of waste and get access to water, as well as plans to open more "meanwhile sites", where people can live in their vans and be provided with basic services. The council currently has around 60 such pitches, with a new site due to open soon. But there is already a waiting list for spaces. Privately, several councillors raised concerns about the pace at which change seemed to be happening, acknowledging people needed to see improvements quickly. The clip, shared by multiple users including one account named Honest Cricket Lover, shows a man recording himself on a flight moments before a crash. The video, captioned as being from the June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash, has garnered significant traction online, stirring emotions and panic. However, fact-checkers and independent sources have confirmed that the video is actually from a previous plane crash in Nepal. The clip was part of an incident involving a Yeti Airlines crash in Pokhara, Nepal, in January 2023, in which a passenger had live-streamed the final moments on Facebook before the aircraft went down. Trump reportedly named 22-year-old college grad to lead counterterrorism. Here's what we know
In early June 2025, rumors circulated that the person U.S. President Donald Trump chose to lead counterterrorism efforts at the Department of Homeland Security was Thomas Fugate, a 22-year-old college graduate with no national security experience. For example, this June 6, 2025, video on Instagram described him as a "22-year-old, fresh-out-of-college former gardener" (archived): This wasn't the first post to make the claim. On June 5, 2025, X user Ron Filipkowski shared the claim with a photo of Fugate (archived): The post had gained 565,700 views and 4,900 likes as of this writing. Other X posts (archived, archived) relayed the claims, as did posts on Reddit (archived), Facebook (archived), Threads (archived) and Instagram (archived). The rumor stemmed from a June 4, 2025, report by ProPublica, which recounted how Fugate was installed at the helm of the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships, known as CP3. Snopes was not able to independently review Fugate's LinkedIn profile, which was deleted after the publication of the report. Therefore, we were not able to confirm the claims directly. However we reached out to him and to DHS and we will update this report should they respond. Former U.S. President Joe Biden's administration established CP3 in 2021 to replace the Office for Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention, saying in a news release that the new center was set up "to combat terrorism and targeted violence, consistent with privacy protections, civil rights and civil liberties, and other applicable laws." In particular, it aimed to gather intelligence on radical extremism within the U.S. and to develop the competencies to prevent domestic terrorism. Its About page says CP3 boasts a multidisciplinary approach with a team that includes a variety of profiles and expertise. Such an organization requires knowledge and experience from the person who leads it, according to unnamed sources cited in the ProPublica report. However, nothing in Fugate's public profile indicated he had such knowledge and experience, ProPublica said. According to a report by The Daily Beast, a review of his now-deleted LinkedIn profile revealed he had worked at an H-E-B grocery store in Texas while in college. In 2020, when he was 17, he worked as a "landscape business owner," the same report said. ProPublica's article added that he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Texas at San Antonio, an academic career that included an internship at the Heritage Foundation, the far-right think tank that appears to have at least partially set the course for Trump's second administration. Later, Fugate reportedly took part in Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. Aside from that, nothing indicated he was qualified for the post at CP3, the reports indicated. In contrast, CP3's previous director, Bill Braniff, was a U.S. Army veteran. He brought to the position more than 20 years of experience in counterterrorism, according to his LinkedIn profile. He left CP3 in March 2025 to become the executive director of the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab at the School of Public Affairs at American University. Fugate's appointment sowed concern among anonymous counterterrorism experts ProPublica interviewed, who called it "reckless." Some described it as symptomatic of the direction the Trump administration was taking, focusing on immigration and away from preventing homegrown violent extremism. Snopes has contacted DHS and CP3 to confirm reporting on the various elements of Fugate's résumé and to inquire further about what, in their view, made Fugate an ideal candidate for this job.
