The planet's remaining carbon budget to meet the international target of 1.5C has just two years left at the current rate of emissions, scientists have warned, showing how deep into the climate crisis the world has fallen.
Breaching the target would ramp up the extreme weather already devastating communities around the world. It would also require carbon dioxide to be sucked from the atmosphere in future to restore the stable climate in which the whole of civilisation developed over the past 10,000 years.
The carbon budget is how much planet-heating CO2 can still be emitted by humanity while leaving a reasonable chance that the temperature target is not blown. The latest assessment by leading climate scientists found that in order to achieve a 66% chance of keeping below the 1.5C target, emissions from 2025 onwards must be limited to 80bn tonnes of CO2. That is 80% lower than it was in 2020.
Emissions reached a new record high in 2024: at that rate the 80bn tonne budget would be exhausted within two years. Lags in the climate system mean the 1.5C limit, which is measured as a multi-year average, would inevitably be passed a few years later, the scientists said.
Scientists have been warning for some time that breaching the 1.5C limit is increasingly unavoidable as emissions from the burning of fossil fuels continue to rise. The latest analysis shows global emissions would have to plummet towards zero within just a few years to have any decent chance of keeping to the target. That appears extremely unlikely, given that emissions in 2024 rose yet again.
However, the scientists emphasised every fraction of a degree of global heating increases human suffering, so efforts to cut emissions must ramp up as fast as possible.
Currently, the world is on track for 2.7C of global heating, which would be a truly catastrophic rise. The analysis shows, for example, that limiting the rise to 1.7C is more achievable: the carbon budget for a 66% chance of keeping below 1.7C is 390bn tonnes, which is about nine years at the current rate of emissions.
'The remaining carbon budgets are declining rapidly and the main reason is the world's failure to curb global CO2 emissions,' said Prof Joeri Rogelj, at Imperial College London, UK. 'Under any course of action now, there is a very high chance we will reach and even exceed 1.5C and even higher levels of warming.'
'The best moment to have started serious climate action was 1992, when the UN [climate] convention was adopted,' he said. 'But now every year is the best year to start being serious about emissions reduction. That is because every fraction of warming we can avoid will result in less harm and suffering, particularly for poor and vulnerable populations, and in less challenges to living the lives we desire.'
Rogelj said it was crucial that countries commit to big emissions cuts at the UN Cop30 climate summit in November.
The hottest year on record was 2024, fuelled by increasing coal and gas burning, and setting an annual average of 1.5C for the first time. There is no sign yet of the transition away from fossil fuels promised by the world's nations at Cop28 in Dubai in December 2023.

Solar and wind energy production is increasing rapidly and has precluded previous worst-case scenarios of 4-5C of global heating. But energy demand is rising even faster, leading to more fossil fuel burning and turbo-charging extreme weather disasters.
The analysis, produced by an international team of 60 leading climate scientists, is an update of the critical indicators of climate change and is published in the journal Earth System Science Data. It aims to provide an authoritative assessment, based on the methods of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, but published annually unlike the intermittent IPCC reports, the most recent of which was 2021.
The study found that the Earth's energy imbalance – the excess heat trapped by the greenhouse effect – has risen by 25% when comparing the past decade with the decade before.
'That's a really large and very worrying number,' said Prof Piers Forster, at the University of Leeds, UK, and lead author of the study. 'I tend to be an optimistic person. But things are not only moving in the wrong direction, we're seeing some unprecedented changes and acceleration of the heating of the Earth and sea level rise.'
Sea level rise has doubled in the past 10 years, compared with the period 1971-2018, the analysis found, rising to 4mm per year. The flooding of coasts will become unmanageable at 1.5C of global heating and lead to 'catastrophic inland migration', a study in May found.
Sea level is rising because about 90% of global heating is absorbed by the oceans, making the water expand, and because the climate crisis is melting glaciers and ice caps.
Dr Karina Von Schuckmann, at Mercator Ocean International, said: 'Warmer waters also lead to intensified weather extremes, and can have devastating impacts on marine ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. In 2024, the ocean reached record values globally.'

Tens of millions of Americans engage in a taboo habit that scientists have warned could pose risks to cognitive health. A recent study found that regularly viewing pornography can immediately reduce a person's performance on tasks requiring attention and cognitive control right after exposure to explicit content. Impaired executive function and reduced cognitive performance are known early markers of cognitive decline, a precursor to dementia. Research has suggested that if such effects are sustained or repeated over time, they could potentially contribute to long-term health risks. In the study, college students watched a 10-minute internet pornographic video chosen for its high viewership. Before and after viewing, they completed a test that measures focus and attention control by requiring them to name the ink color of a word, even when the word spells out a different color, along with three psychological questionnaires. Scientists observed that after watching pornography, participants had significantly slower reaction times and made more errors on the test compared to their performance before viewing. Additionally, the brain activity patterns seen in these students resembled those found in individuals with drug addiction and schizophrenia. Approximately 69 percent of men and 40 percent of women in the U.S. view online pornography each year. Among young adults aged 18 to 25, 57 percent report using porn monthly or more often, compared to 29 percent of those aged 25 and older. Porn addiction is more prevalent among men, with 11 percent reporting having the issue. The study was conducted by scientists from Chengdu Medical College in China, who recruited 16 healthy college students and five college students with severe internet pornography addiction. Participants completed the test, watched the 10-minute pornography video, and then did the test again, while scientists monitored their brain activity. Each group completed 18 rounds of the test, with each round lasting two seconds. The results revealed clear differences between the two groups. Low-frequency users demonstrated stronger connectivity in brain regions involved in language processing, movement coordination and sensory input. While the high-frequency users showed increased connectivity in areas associated with executive functions, which are commonly linked to addiction and emotional regulation. This suggests that frequent pornography consumption may produce neural and behavioral effects similar to other types of addiction. However, the team noted that the low-frequency group also showed slower accuracy and increased reaction while taking the test. Those findings suggest that even if people viewing porn sporadically, they will still experience cognitive effects. The study also examined emotional responses during viewing. Participants who watched pornography less frequently displayed a wider range of emotions, such as surprise, fear, and disgust, while frequent viewers showed more muted or neutral facial expressions. This supports the idea that repeated exposure to explicit content may dull emotional sensitivity over time. In addition to cognitive effects, the high-frequency group scored significantly higher on anxiety and depression questionnaires. Although the study does not establish whether pornography use causes these symptoms or if they arise from other factors, the results align with earlier research connecting heavy pornography consumption to increased emotional distress. 'The effects of internet pornography addiction on brain functional connectivity in the prefrontal lobe exhibit characteristics similar to those of drug addiction,' the researchers concluded. 'Moreover, individuals who frequently consume internet pornography report that they experience stronger sexual arousal and heightened pleasure while viewing, which subsequently adversely affects their cognition and emotions.' A separate study, released in May 2024, evaluated thousands of adults across the world for 'problematic pornography use,' That was defined as watching enough pornography as hurting relationships and job performance, and found that three percent of people exhibited concerning usage, but less than one percent sought treatment. Dr Beatha Bőthe, lead study author and psychologist at the University of Montreal, said: 'Our research shows that the problematic pornography use may be more common than many might think and affects a wide range of people. 'It highlights that while many are struggling, not many seek help. That's important because it suggests that more work needs to be done to understand and support those who are affected by it.'

The world is on track to breach the 1.5C global warming threshold in the next three years, scientists have warned in a new international study. If current emissions continue, humans will have released enough carbon dioxide by early 2028 to lock in 1.5C of long-term warming since preindustrial times, according to the study. The 1.5C target set under the 2015 Paris Agreement is considered a critical limit beyond which climate impacts such as extreme heat, drought, storms and sea level rise could become far more dangerous, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable populations. 'Things aren't just getting worse. They're getting worse faster,' said Zeke Hausfather, study co-author from the tech firm Stripe and climate group Berkeley Earth. 'We're actively moving in the wrong direction in a critical period of time that we would need to meet our most ambitious climate goals. Some reports, there's a silver lining. I don't think there really is one in this one.' The annual Indicators of Global Climate Change report, published in Earth System Science Data, brings together research from almost 60 leading climate scientists. It notes that the remaining 'carbon budget', the amount of CO2 that can still be emitted while staying below 1.5C, has shrunk to just 143 billion tonnes. At current emission rates of 46 billion tonnes per year, the limit will be reached in less than three years. So far, global temperatures have risen by about 1.24C, the study points out. And for the first time ever, the planet passed the 1.5C mark for an entire year in 2024, though the Paris target refers to sustained long-term warming typically measured over two decades. Scientists say without drastic emissions cuts, the world will be unable to prevent warming from surpassing the threshold, leading to a rise in extreme weather events and climate-related disasters and increasing the risk of triggering irreversible changes. The report also warns the carbon budget for 1.6C or 1.7C could be exceeded within nine years, which will significantly intensify these impacts. Long-term estimates show current average global temperatures to be 1.24C higher than in the pre-industrial age. 'Under any course of action, there is a very high chance that we'll reach and even exceed 1.5C and even higher levels of warming,' Prof Joeri Rogelj, research director at the Grantham Institute, said. '1.5C is an iconic level but we are currently already in crunch time…to avoid higher levels of warming with a decent likelihood or a prudent likelihood as well and that is true for 1.7C, but equally so for 1.8C if we want to have a high probability there.' But Prof Rogelj added that reductions in emissions over the next decade could still 'critically change' the rate of warming and limit the magnitude and the extent by which the world would exceed 1.5C. 'It's really the difference between just cruising through 1.5C towards much higher levels of 2C or trying to limit warming somewhere in the range of 1.5,' he said. Piers Forster, professor of climate physics at the University of Leeds who has helped author the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, said the new study highlighted how climate policies and pace of climate action were 'not keeping up with what's needed to address the ever-growing impacts'. In 2024, the best estimate of observed global surface temperature increase was 1.52C, of which 1.36C could be attributed to human activity, caused by global greenhouse gas emissions, the scientists said. The latest study found last year's high temperatures were 'alarmingly unexceptional' as the combination of human-driven climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon pushed global heat to record levels. While global average temperatures exceeded 1.5C for the first time last year, this didn't mean the world had breached the Paris agreement, which would require average global temperatures to exceed the threshold over multiple decades. When analysing longer-term temperature change, the best estimates show that average global temperatures were 1.24C higher between 2015 and 2024 than in pre-industrial times, with 1.22C caused by human activities. Elsewhere, the study noted that human activities were affecting the Earth's energy balance, with the oceans storing about 91 per cent of the excess heat, driving detrimental changes in every component of the climate system such as sea level rise, ocean warming, ice loss, and permafrost thawing. Between 2019 and 2024, mean sea level also increased by around 26mm, more than doubling the long-term rate of 1.8mm per year seen since the turn of the 20th century. Dr Aimee Slangen, research leader at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, argued the rise was already having an 'outsized impact' on low-lying coastal areas, causing more damaging storm surges and coastal erosion. 'The concerning part is that we know that sea-level rise in response to climate change is relatively slow, which means that we have already locked in further increases in the coming years and decades,' she said. IPCC's last assessment of the climate system, published in 2021, highlighted how climate change was leading to widespread adverse impacts on nature and people. 'Every small increase in warming matters, leading to more frequent, more intense weather extremes,' Professor Rogelj said. 'Emissions over the next decade will determine how soon and how fast 1.5C of warming is reached. They need to be swiftly reduced to meet the climate goals of the Paris Agreement.'

Few, if any, British garden birds are as well-known or well-loved as the blackbird. Yet a combination of warmer, drier springs and a mosquito-borne disease in the UK – both the result of the climate crisis – have put this member of the thrush family under threat. Like many other common and familiar species, blackbirds evolved in woods and forests but then learned to take advantage of the plentiful food and suitable nesting sites in urban, suburban and rural gardens. They often feed on lawns, using their powerful bill to probe for earthworms and other invertebrates beneath the surface of the soil. But the UK's warm, dry springs – 2025 was officially the sunniest since records began more than a century ago – force those creatures deeper underground and bake the soil hard, so that blackbirds cannot find the food they need for themselves and their growing chicks. And, in a double whammy, since 2020 the Usutu virus, spread by mosquitoes from Africa via continental Europe, has been detected in blackbirds in south-east England, with London's population falling by 40% in five years.
