Airdrie artist wowed Ozzy Osbourne with portrait less than two weeks before music legend passed away
An Airdrie artist wowed legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne with his portrait of the Black Sabbath frontman less than two weeks before the icon passed away.
The music world was stunned yesterday with the news Ozzy died at the age of 76 surrounded by his loving family.
Ozzy was a "hero" to David McDonagh, who runs his own business, Lewy L. Paintings, and works on comic book art portraits and pop art.
David finally got to meet the heavy metal star in the singer's home town of Birmingham on July 12 - and was thrilled by his response to his colourful artwork.
David told Lanarkshire Live: "I met Ozzy in Birmingham a week after his Back to the Beginning farewell gig.
"After years and years of trying to meet him, I finally got the chance to shake the hand of one of my heroes and show him my artwork.
"When he saw the painting, he responded, 'that's nice that, I like it', which blew my mind.
"I also got to meet Sharon, Jack and Kelly [Osbourne] and they were such a friendly bunch.
"It took me a week to come down from the meeting and then the heartbreaking news came in yesterday about Ozzy passing away.
"I cannot believe he is gone, it's so sad.
"He was a music legend and an icon to so many. I will never forget meeting Ozzy."
David added: "I called my first bulldog Ozzy as we got him when The Osbournes TV was on.
"When I met Jack I gave him some artwork of Lola the bulldog from the show and he was really chuffed."
David has shared special moments with many famous faces from the worlds of film, music, football and wrestling, including Andy Serkis, Robert Carlyle, The Undertaker, Ally McCoist, Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown, Meat Loaf and Liam Gallagher.
He said: 'Working as an artist is my dream job; that's what I wanted to be when I was at school but got it knocked out of me when I was told it wasn't a 'real job'.
'But I've proved that it is a real job and the timing was just right to become a full-time artist as I was juggling a full-time job with painting at night.
'I decided it was getting too much and handed my notice in and just went for it, with great support from fellow artists.'

Over the years, Aimee hasn't been seen in public with her brother and sister. She is a singer who has released music under the moniker ARO since 2010. However, Aimee has shied away from the limelight around her parents. She is the eldest of the Ozzy and Sharon's kids but famously declined to appear on the family's MTV reality series The Osbournes in the early noughties. The show was an instant hit and propelled her parents and siblings into huge stardom. However, just weeks before his dad's death at the age of 76, Jack opened up about his relationship with Aimee, and said they were "not close at all". Appearing on the Disrespectfully podcast, Jack was quizzed on whether Aimee regretted not taking part in the family's reality series. He admitted: "I've never had the conversation with her, we're not close at all. "We don't have a great relationship, she'll be the first to tell you that, so it's no secret. Thousands of fans lined the streets of Birmingham for the rock legend's funeral procession. David Attenborough fans have gushed over the presenter's 'stunning' new 'Parenthood' series which delves into the unique lives of animal parents. The incredible documentary, narrated by 99-year-old Sir David, explores both the highs and lows of animals raising their young in the wild. The first episode of the beloved broadcaster's new five-part series aired on Sunday, August 3, with viewers taking to social media to express their utter delight at the insightful programme that left them 'blown away'. A fascinating clip from the show captures Attenborough's team as they attempt to build up a relationship with the unique silverback gorillas and their infants. Described by Max Kobl, cinematographer for the show, as 'probably the most powerful of all primates', Sir David, narrating, warns that 'it isn't going to come easy' for the film crew as they attempt to get close to the sneaky gorillas. Initially, the team face great difficulty even finding the animals, seen wading through thick swamps in order to locate them and using indicators such as the types of twigs on the ground. Commentating, one member of the crew says: 'The swamps don't pose challenges for the gorillas, the swamps pose one of many challenges for us.' In the insightful footage of their challenging trek, one member of the team is seen nearly toppling over due to the thick, knee-deep water. When asked 'you okay?', he simply responds: 'nope'. Reflecting on the ongoing challenge as the gorilla's appear seemingly camera shy, Peter Lytle, a researcher on the team, acknowledges that while its 'great' they have managed to finally locate the animals, the gorillas have now decided they would like to return. At a later point, the film crew finally achieve some success, eventually striking up a relationship with the silverback gorillas and their young babies, with incredible footage capturing them in their natural habitat. Watching on lovingly at the magnificent creatures, one member of the film crew remarks: 'there's something everyday the gorillas do to put a smile on their face'. Meanwhile, a trecker, who provides detailed insights into the lives and habits of the unique animals to Attenborough's team throughout the process, explains that 'you have to live among these animals to really understand how they work'. Acknowledging the intricacies of the relationship between man and animal, he continues: 'They don't speak the same language as us, but we have already developed a certain language which allows the gorillas and us to communicate, its a form of love.' Filmed over three years and spanning six continents, the new docu-series seeks to highlight how parenting in the wild can be a 'high-stakes game in which some animal parents must come up with extraordinary strategies to give their young a head start'. Promising viewers 'astonishing, never-before-seen animal behaviours in stunning ultra high definition, from the remote jungles of Bhutan to the grasslands of Botswana', those who tuned in to watch the series' first instalment have been left in awe. Taking to social media to express their fascination with the 'stunning' new show, one commenter on social media platform X gushed: 'All the contributors to Parenthood are amazing', while another added: 'Parenthood is another great programme. Congratulations once again Sir David Attenborough and the BBC'. Meanwhile, other viewers were keen to share their utter adoration for the adorable gorillas in the episode, taking to social media to insist they could 'watch them for hours', while another quipped: 'These gorillas are playing the crew like a fiddle'. Another adorable clip captures the wonderful moment a gorilla mother clutches her sleeping newborn to her chest, as he twitches fitfully in his slumber. The clip shows a female western lowland gorilla with her moments-old baby in a breathtaking landscape of green jungle. Narrating, Sir David says: 'For his mother, the arrival of her young baby is the start of a new chapter in her adult life - parenthood. 'Her journey will be challenging, full of excitement, uncertainty and complete commitment. It is the first BBC natural history series to focus on parenting, with the team using new technology to capture the weird and wonderful in the wild. These include using military-grade infrared cameras mounted on gimbals on off-road vehicles and show hippos being chased by lions at night. The next episode of Parenthood airs on BBC One on Sunday, August 10 at 4.20pm. All episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer.

Jack Osbourne reflects on childhood with dad Ozzy in first TV appearance since his death
Cooking with the Stars contestant Jack Osbourne spoke about his late dad Ozzy Osbourne on the first episode of the new series, which aired earlier tonight on ITV The late Ozzy Osbourne was mentioned by his son Jack Osbourne during a TV appearance that aired tonight. He spoke about his late father whilst competing on Cooking with the Stars. Jack is among the celebrity contestants on the new series of the ITV show. He competed in the first episode, which aired this evening, just over a week after it was announced that Ozzy had died, aged 76. Speaking about his experience with food growing up, he told host Emma Willis whilst making risotto on the show: "There was a lot of Birdseye Potato Waffles." Following surprise from the presenter, he added: "Because I was here until I was 12 and then we went to America [and] it was all take out." He continued: "We'd go through bouts of having a chef but everyone's such ... very picky eaters so chefs don't usually last long in our house. Because all of a sudden my dad's like 'no, I don't like it anymore' even though it's like some amazing chef." Last week, Jack and some of his family announced that musician Ozzy had died, just weeks after he performed in a farewell gig alongside his band Black Sabbath. Sharon Osbourne and four of Ozzy's children issued a joint statement. It read: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis." Jack competed against reality TV star Jess Wright on Cooking with the Stars tonight. The episode also saw former EastEnders cast member Natalie Cassidy take on radio host Jordan North in the kitchen.
