Twins top Red Sox 5-4 on 2-run single in 9th by Brooks Lee after 90-minute rain delay

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brooks Lee hit a two-run single off Jordan Hicks in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox after a 90-minute rain delay Monday night.
After Roman Anthony put Boston in front with an RBI single off Twins closer Jhoan Duran (6-4) in the top of the ninth, the grounds crew hustled out the tarp to beat a downpour.
Hicks (1-7), who had warmed up before the delay, allowed a single to DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and hit Mickey Gasper and Willi Castro with consecutive pitches. With one out, Lee delivered his third walk-off hit this season with a slap the other way with a few hundred fans standing in front of soaked seats.
Alex Bregman homered for the second straight game, a three-run shot off Simeon Woods Richardson in the fifth that put Boston up 3-2 after another unfulfilling start by Richard Fitts.
Fitts allowed a two-run homer to Keirsey after walking Christian Vazquez to start the third. Keirsey, making his first start in 29 games with All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton ( ribcage irritation ) sidelined, is 9 for 75 this season. Vázquez has been batting under .200 for six weeks.
The Red Sox, who are in the market for starting pitching with Hunter Dobbins done for the season, were thin in the bullpen with closer Aroldis Chapman unavailable (back tightness) and another reliever, Garrett Whitlock, ailing after a turbulent flight to Minnesota required a pit stop during stormy weather.
The Twins traded starting pitcher Chris Paddack to division-leading Detroit before the game. Key moment
Fitts skirted bases-loaded trouble with none out in the fourth, striking out Ty France and getting Vázquez to ground into a double play. Key stat
Anthony, who has taken over the leadoff spot for good, had two hits and two walks. Up next
Lucas Giolito (6-2, 3.97 ERA) starts for Boston on Tuesday, when Paddack was scheduled to pitch. Minnesota will staff it with the bullpen instead.

Darvish sharp for 7 innings, Sheets homers and the Padres beat the Mets 5-0 for 3-game sweep

Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — Yu Darvish pitched seven impressive innings for his first win of the season, Gavin Sheets hit a two-run homer and the San Diego Padres beat the NL East-leading New York Mets 5-0 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Manny Machado added a two-run, bases-loaded single for the Padres, who won their fifth straight game as they continue to chase the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Slugger Juan Soto was out of the lineup for the Mets a day after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot. Darvish (1-3), who turns 39 on Aug. 16, held the Mets to two hits, struck out seven and walked none in his fifth start. After allowing Mark Vientos' single with one out in the first, Darvish retired the next 13 batters. He had been sidelined by right elbow inflammation from mid-March until making his season debut on July 7. Darvish got a nice ovation as he headed to the dugout after pitching a perfect seventh in what became the Padres' big league-high 15th shutout. It was Darvish's 111th big league win, which, combined with his 93 in Japan, allowed him to break out of a tie with Hiroki Kuroda and take sole possession of first place on the combined all-time list. Sheets' homer off Clay Holmes (9-6) came after Jose Iglesias reached on shortstop Francisco Lindor's throwing error with two outs in the third. Sheets then drove an 0-2 pitch an estimated 427 feet to right-center, his 15th. Holmes retired the first two batters in the second before allowing a single by Martin Maldonado, hitting Fernando Tatis Jr. on the top of the left hand with a pitch and walking Luis Arraez. Machado then singled to left for a 2-0 lead. Machado hit a three-run homer in a 7-1 win on Tuesday night. Holmes lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs — two earned — and eight hits. The Mets were swept in a series of three or more games at San Diego for the first time since 2008. Key moment Sheets' homer gave Darvish some breathing room. Key stat It was the 10th time in Darvish's 14-year career that he pitched seven-plus innings while allowing no runs and two or fewer hits. Up next Mets LHP David Peterson (7-4, 2.83 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday night in the opener of a three-game home series against San Francisco. The Padres haven't named a starter for Friday night's opener of a three-game home series against St. Louis. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

Twins Correa says talk of return to Houston isn't 'serious'

Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Carlos Correa said discussions about a trade from Minnesota back to Houston before Thursday's deadline aren't 'serious," but he didn't rule out the possibility of returning to the city where he won a World Series. 'That's not something that's, I don't think, serious right now,' the shortstop said after sitting out Minnesota's 13-1 loss to Boston on Wednesday with a migraine. 'We'll see where everything goes, but my goal has always been to be here and win here." The three-time All-Star has a no-trade clause in the six-year, $200 million contract he signed with the Twins in 2023, so he'd need to sign off on any deal. Correa said he's been in frequent communication with Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey and manager Rocco Baldelli, and said he has 'full control' over what happens between now and the 6 p.m. ET Thursday deadline. The Astros may be in need of an infielder, with third baseman Isaac Paredes continuing to battle a strained hamstring. Correa is a beloved fixture in franchise history who led Houston to a 2017 World Series crown and batted .277 with 489 RBIs in seven seasons. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, who remains close with Correa, was asked in Houston on Wednesday if he'd heard about the possibility of him returning to the team. 'Correa's a guy with a lot of history here in Houston,' Altuve said. 'He's a great player, great human being, great teammate. So I think — if anything (were) to happen, I hope it's the best for him and for us.' Altuve said he hasn't talked to Correa about it and that he probably wouldn't get in touch with him until after the deadline. The 30-year-old Correa hasn't been quite the same player since signing a three-year deal with Minnesota in 2022. Correa opted out of that contract and agreed to join the San Francisco Giants then the New York Mets, but both deals were negated after his physicals. He re-signed with Minnesota, where he's hit .271 while battling several nagging injuries that have had him in and out of the lineup. After trading starter Chris Paddack to Detroit on Tuesday, the Twins have indicated they plan to keep shedding contracts at this year's deadline. A team that expected to compete for the AL Central is fourth in the division, 4-8 since the All-Star break and an AL-worst 20-31 since June 1. While Falvey and the front office continue to believe in a core that includes All-Star Byron Buxton, Royce Lewis and ace Pablo Lopez, the team may start preparing for next season and beyond by maximizing the return value of expiring contracts. It's the first time in his career Correa has played for a team in 'sell' mode. 'I've been having a lot of conversation with players and just try to keep them focused on the things that they can control and the daily work that we do here, to go out there and try to win games and whatever happens happens,' Correa said. Correa also left Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox with a migraine. An MRI on Wednesday revealed no serious concerns. Correa isn't the only Twins player whose name has swirled in the annual trade deadline rumor mill. Closer Jhoan Duran, reliever Griffin Jax, outfielder Harrison Bader, catcher Christian Vazquez, reliever Danny Coulombe, outfielder Ty France and utility man Willi Castro, among others, are set to become free agents or arbitration-eligible after the season. 'This game has kind of thrown me all over the place,' said France, who signed with Minnesota in February. 'I've been traded a few times, been DFA'd, I've been through it all. So it's just part of the business. It's not a fun part, but it is what it is." Jax said he's never dealt with this before. "A couple of years ago in '21, I was the guy that was going to get called up if we made some trades, and that's what ended up happening. So, now being on this side and seeing the other sides of emotions and what it's really like from the business side, it's just different.' Castro exited Wednesday's loss to Boston early and was seen shaking hands with many of his teammates in the dugout. 'I was planning on taking Willi out of the game,' Baldelli said. 'Willi hasn't gone anywhere. I just wanted to give him a little pat. He plays hard for us every day." Castro, a 2024 All-Star said afterward he was 'nervous' about the 24 hours leading up to the deadline. "They haven't told me anything yet,' he said. ___ Associated Press Sports Writer Kristie Rieken in Houston contributed to this story. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2
