Johor cops bust RM7.1 million drug syndicate in two major raids
Johor police chief CP Datuk M Kumar said the special operation was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Johor police contingent headquarters with Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, at about 7.30 pm, between June 14 and 15.
He said that in the first raid at a two-storey terrace house in Taman Mutiara Rini, police arrested a 45-year-old local man believed to be the mastermind along with a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman.
'As a result of the inspection, police seized 2.67 kilogrammes of powder believed to be ecstasy and 368 grammes of drugs suspected to be marijuana,' he said in a press conference today.
Following the arrest, police launched a second raid on another terrace house about a kilometre from the first location, which had also been rented by the same male suspect since May 2024 and arrested a 23-year-old Vietnamese woman.
'In this second raid, police seized 38 kg of ecstasy powder and 1.37 kg of ketamine,' he said.
In both raids, police also seized two cars worth RM190,000, cash RM49,150 and various jewellery worth RM17,630, with the total seizure amounting to RM265,615.
He said the two foreign women were believed to have entered the country legally, but further investigations were being conducted into their travel documents.
The syndicate is believed to operate in an organised manner, including using social media and delivery via 'runners' and police believe there are still members at large out there and investigations are underway to track them down.
He said that apart from being used as a residence, the first house is believed to be used as a place to store drugs, while the second house is a location to package the drug powder into small packets which are believed to be sold in the local market for RM250 to RM350.
Kumar said urine tests showed that the man involved tested positive for methamphetamine while the two foreign women tested positive for ketamine and benzodiazepines.
All of them have been remanded until June 26 for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Muslim men in Terengganu face two years in jail, RM3,000 fine for missing Friday prayers
PETALING JAYA: A hefty fine of up to RM3,000 and even up to two years in jail now await Muslim men in Terengganu who miss Friday prayers without a valid reason. Terengganu information, dakwah and syariah empowerment committee chairman Dr Muhammad Khalil said the punishments would only be imposed as a last resort if reminders were ignored. 'The installation of reminder banners in mosque compounds throughout the state is aimed at issuing a clear warning about the obligation to perform Friday prayers. 'Muslims should view the enforcement of this law as an effort to educate and uphold the dignity of religion, especially in fostering awareness among the younger generation,' he reportedly told Sinar Harian on Tuesday (Aug 19). Khalil said enforcement of the new change will be carried out through public reports alongside patrols and joint operations by the Terengganu Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT) and local authorities. He said the new provision is part of the implementation of the state's previous amendments to the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment (Takzir) 2016, which was passed several years ago. 'Previously, enforcement action was taken only against those who missed Friday prayers three times consecutively, but with this amendment, action can be taken if it is missed even once,' he added.

Johor issues RM335,000 in compounds for littering offences since January
JOHOR BAHRU: Local authorities in Johor have issued 2,058 littering summonses worth more than RM335,000 from the beginning of this year until July. Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon confirmed that the compounds resulted from enforcement actions carried out by the involved local authorities. He stated that the state government is serious about addressing the long-standing waste disposal problem, including establishing a Special Committee in collaboration with various agencies. 'Under the direction of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and Johor Chief Minister, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, this committee was established to strengthen enforcement and combat illegal dumping,' he said in a Facebook post. Ling explained that various action plans have been drawn up, including intensifying awareness campaigns and anti-littering activities. He also confirmed that integrated enforcement would be carried out involving various agencies to ensure the public complies with the law and maintains environmental cleanliness. 'We hope that through these various approaches, the public will become more aware of the punishment that awaits them,' he added. 'This is in case they litter in public areas, which affects the environment and drainage systems,' he concluded. – Bernama

Greece seizes record amount of narcotic leaf
ATHENS: Greece has made a record seizure of khat, confiscating half a tonne of the illegal plant-based drug, Athens airport said on Sunday. The drug is made from the leaves of the khat plant, native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. When chewed, khat releases chemicals similar to amphetamines, resulting in a mild high. Greece's state-run news agency said the seizure's size made it the largest haul ever confiscated in the country, with a value estimated at EUR1,500,000 ($1,750,000). According to the Athens News Agency, the illegal substance was hidden in four shipping containers declared to be holding curtains, sheets and fabrics, transiting from Israel and bound for the United States. Greece's previous record seizure was also confiscated at Athens International Airport, on December 4, 2014. Khat, also known as qat, is very popular in Yemen and Horn of Africa countries including Ethiopia and Somalia.
