Nearly 200 foreigners held in KL nightclub raid
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 200 foreigners were detained in an Immigration Department raid on a nightclub offering "dugem" music in Pudu, here, early today.
According to a post on the department's official Facebook page, the raid was conducted following public complaints and two weeks of intelligence gathering by its Enforcement Division in Putrajaya.
"Dugem" is an acronym for "Dunia Gemerlap" (shining world), referring to the nightlife scene, particularly clubbing and discotheques. The colloquial term is also associated with alcohol consumption or taking illicit substances.
"An operations team consisting of 129 officers was deployed to the premises, along with 11 officers from the National Registration Department.
"A total of 310 individuals were initially checked during the operation — 128 foreign men, 116 foreign women and 66 Malaysian citizens," the department said.
It added that 185 Indonesians, comprising 106 men and 79 women, a Cambodian man and woman, and a Nepalese man, all aged between 21 and 35, were detained for various immigration offenses.
"The offences include overstaying and not possessing valid travel documents.
"All detainees were taken to the KLIA and Lenggeng Immigration Detention Depots for investigation and further action."
The department also said eight summonses were issued to witnesses, including the club supervisor, premises caretaker and a female disc-jockey (DJ) working at the venue.
The nightclub's modus operandi was to feature local and foreign DJs playing "dugem" music, primarily targeting foreigners from Indonesia.
"The club operated from 11pm to 5am. At the time of the raid, the foreign patrons were found engrossed in the 'dugem' music."
"All foreigners were held under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63," it said.

Shattered dreams: Dad receives daughter's death certificate instead of degree after UPSI bus crash
JERTIH, June 13 — Nearly a year ago, Mohamad Isma Abdul Manaf sent off his eldest daughter, Nur Dalila Farhana, to university with the hope that she would return home with a degree. But fate had other plans. Instead of a degree, today, the 47-year-old father received his daughter's death certificate. Nur Dalila Farhana, 21, was among the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday. 'It tore me apart to see my daughter's name on a death certificate. No parent ever wishes to face that, but this is my fate. I have to accept it and stay strong,' he told Bernama after receiving the document from Terengganu National Registration Department (NRD) director Mohamad Nasir Kareem at the family's home in Kampung Bharu Tok Dhor here. Mohamad Isma said that the death certificate in hand would ease matters for him and his wife, Norinda Kasim, 49, in handling other affairs, such as insurance claims and related issues. The crash occurred when the chartered bus, en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle before overturning. The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir said that eight death certificates were handed over to the next of kin at their respective residences today, adding that five others were collected by family members at the NRD counters, whereas two more are still being processed. 'This is an initiative by the NRD to ease the burden on families by handling the death registration process for their children without requiring them to be present at the NRD counters in Besut or Setiu,' he added. — Bernama

Court fines Singaporean for road rage, spitting incident
Day in court: Police officers escorting Cheng at the Magistrate's Court in Johor Baru. JOHOR BARU: A Singaporean man was fined RM9,100 by a Magistrate's Court here for damaging a Malaysian man's car and spitting in the driver's face during a road rage incident. Human resources manager Cheng Kuan Poh, 40, pleaded guilty to the two offences, which were heard by Magistrate A. Shaarmini yesterday. In the first charge, he was accused of committing mischief by damaging Ng Yeow Meng's Malaysian-registered car at Jalan Sutera Tanjung 8/4, Taman Sutera Utama, here, at 2.39pm on Saturday. Cheng was also charged with insulting the modesty of 32-year-old Ng by way of spitting on his face at the same place and time. The two charges were framed under Section 426 and Section 509 of the Penal Code respectively. Cheng said he understood the charges and punishment, which were read to him in Mandarin. His lawyer Norfarahin Mohd Yazid asked the court for a lower fine, noting that he has to take care of his sick parents, who are also bedridden. 'He earns S$2,000 (RM6,595) as a human resources manager and this is his first offence,' she said. The magistrate then ordered Cheng to pay a fine of RM4,300 in default six months' jail and RM4,800 in default six months' jail for the first and second charges respectively. Earlier, before entering the courtroom, Cheng, who wore a face mask, stopped in his tracks at the sight of media members and turned away while saying, 'I don't want, I don't want.' The court police officers then tugged him on the arm and nudged him forward to enter the courtroom. It was reported that Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the Singaporean was detained on Sunday to assist in the investigation after a video of an altercation between two men outside a car went viral on social media. The video, recorded by a woman seated inside the vehicle, showed the Singaporean shouting at them and repeatedly kicking the car, damaging it.
