Hurricane Erin closes 2 Massachusetts beaches. NWS warns of 'life-threatening' surf

Although Hurricane Erin isn't forecasted to hit Massachusetts, the Bay State is still feeling the effects of the storm. That's why two beaches on the South Shore were shut down for today, Tuesday Aug. 19. "The main concern this week though is for high surf and dangerous rip currents to ocean exposed beaches through (Friday)," according to the National Weather Service online forecaster's discussion. What beaches were shut down in Massachusetts because of the problem? Here's what to know. What beaches have been shut down because of Hurricane Erin? The Scituate, MA website is reporting, "Minot Beach and Peggotty Beach are closed to swimming ... due to rough water conditions. The situation will be monitored on a daily basis." The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisore from 8 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. Thursday due to "life threatening" swimming conditions on the southern Massachusetts coast and Rhode Island coast. 'Erin will churn up rough surf and dangerous rip currents along the Atlantic coastline from Florida all the way north to Maine starting this weekend into next week...a major hurricane in the open Atlantic can produce very rough surf that will impact beaches hundreds of miles away," AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Dasilva said in a statement last week. What are rip currents? They are powerful channels of fast-moving water, and they have killed about 50 people in the U.S. so far this year, according to a release last week from AccuWeather. If you are caught in a rip current, officials advise you to swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the channel, AccuWeather noted in the release. The report noted that the climatological peak of hurricane season begins Sept. 10. What is the NOAA forecast on hurricanes in 2025? NOAA is forecasting a range of 13 to 19 total named storms. Of those, 6 to 10 are forecast to become hurricanes, including 3 to 5 major hurricanes. This article originally appeared on Hurricane Erin closes 2 MA beaches. High Surf advisory issued for MA

Hurricane Erin to pass by Del, NJ during August new moon; what that means for high tides

A new moon draws the highest tide of the month, but this week's timing could make Hurricane Erin's impact worse. Here's when and what to know about the August new moon. Hurricane Erin has maximum sustainted winds of 105 mph and is forecast to grow, as of 11 a.m. ET on Aug. 19, according to the National Hurricane Center. They've issued tropical storm conditions and coastal flooding for parts of North Carolina and life-threatening rip currents along East Coast beaches, many of which have already been shut down in Delaware and New Jersey. The dangerous storm is expected to cause beach erosion and coastal flooding in some areas, all of which could be worsened by the higher-than-normal tides this week, leading up to Saturday's new moon. Here's when and what to know about the August new moon and how it causes high tides. When is the next new moon? The next new moon, known as the black moon, will occur on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025 at 2:06 a.m. ET. Why does the moon causes high tides? High tides and low tides are caused by the moon because the moon's gravity pulls on everything on Earth, including the oceans. It is the primary force behind high tides, which pulls bulges of water on the side of the Earth closest to the moon, according to NASA. According to NOAA, the bulge on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest to the moon are high tides. When not in one of these bulges, it is low tide. As the Earth rotates, bodies of water pass through both of the bulges each day creating two high tide cycles and two low tides. Twice a month, during the full moon and new moon phases, the Earth, sun and moon line up and the combined gravitational power of the sun and moon cause extremely high tides where the bulges occur, called spring tides. High tides and storm surges — when storm winds whip up coastal waters — combine to create dangerous flooding conditions. What are the moon phases for August 2025? 🌓 First Quarter: Aug. 1🌕 Full Moon: Aug. 9🌗 Last Quarter: Aug. 16🌑 New Moon: Aug. 23🌓 First Quarter: Aug. 31 When is the next full moon? The next full moon in September will be the harvest moon. It will occur on Sept. 7, 2025 When is the next new moon? The next new moon will occur on Sept. 21, 2025. Where is Hurricane Erin? When will storm move past NJ?

Erin is a large, slow-moving hurricane, moving at roughly 8 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. While still not predicted to make landfall in the U.S., Hurricane Erin's slow pace has seen it power up and down and will mean its impact on coastal areas could linger. Here's what you need to know: When will Erin pass by New Jersey? Erin is now a Category 4 hurricane passing east of the Bahamas. Predictive models see it moving north along the U.S. East Coast, but moving outward, farther and farther from the coastline. Erin will be close to New Jersey between Thursday night and Friday morning, Aug. 21 and 22. By that time, it will pass hundreds of miles away from New Jersey's coastlines as a Category 2 hurricane, forecasters predict. The storm will be gone and mostly broken up by Sunday, predictive models show. What's going to be Erin's impact in New Jersey? How much is going to rain? The peak of Hurricane Erin's effects will be felt on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, Mount Holly office. Most of its impact will be confined to coastal areas, where a high risk of rip currents will continue until Friday. Even though Erin is a large system, it is not large enough and will be too far from the coast to bring any rain here. Any precipitation we might have is unlikely to come from Erin, NWS forecasted.
