NWS upgrade to send Central Illinois weather radios offline June 3rd-5th
Peoria, Ill. (WMBD) — The National Weather Service office in Lincoln will be conducting an update of its Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS) from approximately 7 am on June 3 through the afternoon of June 5. Due to this scheduled upgrade, all NOAA Weather Radio stations operated by the Lincoln NWS will be off air during this time. The following weather stations are the ones that will be affected: Peoria: WXJ-71 (162.475 MHz, channel 4) Bloomington: KZZ-65 (162.525 MHz, channel 6) Galesburg: KZZ-66 (162.400 MHz, channel 1) Champaign: WXJ-76 (162.550 MHz, channel 7) Jacksonville: WXM-90 (162.525 MHz, channel 6) Newton: KXI-48 (162.450 MHz, channel 3) Paris: KXI-47 (162.525 MHz, channel 6) Shelbyville: KXI-46 (162.500 MHz, channel 5) Springfield: WXJ-75 (162.400 MHz, channel 1) Some locations, mainly on the edges of county lines, may be close enough in proximity to receive a degraded signal from a nearby operating station. Unfortunately, Peoria County does not have an alternate station close enough to serve as an alternate. For other counties in our area here are some you can try, though a signal may still be difficult to pick up: Counties Alternate Station Fulton, Knox, Mason, Schuyler, Cass, Brown Macomb: (WXJ-92, 162.500 MHz, channel 5) Marshall, McLean, Woodford, Ford Odell: (WXK-24, 162.450 MHz, channel 3) Marshall, Stark, Henry Princeton: (WXL-22, 162.425 MHz, channel 2) Mercer Burlington, IA: (WXN-83, 162.525 MHz, channel 6) Ford, Vermilion Crescent City: (KXI-86, 162.500 MHz, channel 5) Crawford, Lawrence Edwardsport, IN: (WWG-83, 162.425 MHz, channel 2) Edwards Evansville, IN: (KIG-76, 162.550 MHz, channel 7) Brown, Pike Hannibal, MO: (WXK-82, 162.475 MHz, channel 4) Calhoun, Greene, Macoupin Jerseyville: (KXI-70, 162.450 MHz, channel 3) Henry, Mercer Rock Island: (WXJ-73, 162.550 MHz, channel 7) Clay, Fayette, Marion, Wayne Salem: (KXI-49, 162.475 MHz, channel 4) While the weather radio stations will be off air, smartphone apps configured to receive warning information, like the CiProud 2 Go Weather App, will continue to do so. Makes sure you have your locations settings turned on so you can receive these alerts. NOAA Weather Radios are seen as a first line of defense in receiving life saving weather information but it is important to have multiple sources as a form of redundancy. We're looking at a welcomed break from severe weather through the start of next week, but some guidance is pointing to a more active pattern emerging by the end of next week. If this active pattern materializes, we could see a return of severe weather around the time this upgrade is scheduled. Statewide tornado drill scheduled for Thursday, April 10
The Brief Wisconsin's annual tornado drill is scheduled for Thursday, April 10. The drill is being held during Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week. Everyone in the state is invited to participate by going to their designated tornado shelter. MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin's annual tornado drill is slated to take place on Thursday, April 10. Everyone in the state is invited to participate by going to their designated tornado shelter at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Thursday, or during a time when they can safely practice. What we know The statewide drill will not include a mock tornado warning issued as a live code test of the Emergency Alert System. As a result, there will be no notification tone sounded on NOAA Weather Radios that are currently sent to silently monitor for alerts. Sirens may or may not sound – it is up to each municipality or county. FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX LOCAL Mobile app for iOS or Android The National Weather Service will issue a routine weekly test to weather radios during the drill times, which will display a test message on those devices and will only be audible if radios are currently turned on. What you can do According to Ready Wisconsin, whether at home, work, or school, it's important to have a plan in place and to know where to go if a tornado warning is issued: In a home or building, move to a pre-designated shelter, such as a basement, and get under a sturdy table or the stairs. If a basement is not available, move to a small interior room on the lowest floor and cover yourself with anything close at hand: towels, blankets, pillows. If possible, get under a sturdy table, desk, or counter. Put as many walls as possible between you and the storm. Stay away from windows. SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News If caught outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If you cannot quickly walk to shelter, get into a vehicle, buckle your seatbelt and drive to the closest sturdy shelter. If flying debris occurs while you are driving, pull over and park. Now you have two options as a last resort: Stay in the vehicle with the seatbelt on and place your head below the windows. If you can safely get noticeably lower than the roadway, exit the vehicle and lie in that area, covering your head with your hands. Never seek shelter under an overpass. They can create a wind tunnel that attracts debris during a tornado, putting you in danger. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes. You should leave a mobile home and go to the designated storm shelter or the lowest floor of a sturdy nearby building. Tornado drill to be held in Kansas for Severe Weather Preparedness Week
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The National Weather Service plans a tornado drill in Kansas for Severe Weather Preparedness Week. In Wichita, the drill will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5. During the drill, a test will be broadcast over NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radios, and local officials may also sound their warning sirens. Some areas in Kansas will hold their drills at 11 a.m. While participation is not mandatory, the NWS encourages everyone to treat it like an active tornado warning by seeking safe shelter. Storm Track 3 'Certified Most Accurate' for 7th straight year 'The purpose of the drill is to test everyone's readiness for life-threatening severe weather events such as tornadoes, flash floods, and damaging winds,' said NWS. Now is the time to develop a tornado safety plan: Identify your safe shelter, gather emergency supplies, and make plans for your pets. Severe Weather Preparedness Week runs from March 3 to 7. During this time, KSN's Storm Track 3 Weather Team will discuss severe weather safety topics daily on air and online. Stay alert with the free KSN Storm Track 3 Weather App. You can download it here.
