Review: Mike Lovatt's Brass Pack: 'Perth Festival breaks new ground'

Perth Concert Hall
PERFORMANCES by youngsters from across Perth and Kinross are always a thread running through Perth Festival of the Arts, but this may have been the first time they have featured in the event's closing concert.
The young musicians topped and tailed a festival debut by trumpeter Mike Lovatt's Brass Pack, adding some Marvel and Pixar movie modernity to a programme that majored on Hollywood's earlier Golden Age. Anyone who expected the Brass Pack Cubs opening performance of The Avengers Theme to evoke images of Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as John Steed and Emma Peel was living in the past.
The nostalgia-fest came later, when Lovatt's unusually-configured ensemble took the stage and he and arranger and conductor Colin Skinner – and later vocalist Anne-Jane Casey – guided us through a programme that included music from My Fair Lady, Kiss Me Kate, Funny Girl and Chinatown amongst others.
Informative though their words were, there were possibly rather more of them than the evening really required, even if the concept of Lovatt's band does need some explanation. Derived from a 1958 recording by Billy May, arranger of classic sessions for Frank Sinatra, it eschews saxophones in favour of French horns, tubas and a harp. Skinner – paradoxically a saxophonist himself – has mastered May's musical language with superb versions of Bidin' My Time, Young At Heart and (Love Is) The Tender Trap.

Those individual numbers were more successful than the medleys. In the set's opening Hollywood Overture, the scratch horn section, led by the BBC SSO's Lauren Reeve Rawlings, was not the only part of the band that took a while to get its intonation set, and the later John Williams tribute only showcased the Brass Pack's unique sound when it reached the Indiana Jones theme.
Casey, for all her seasoned stage confidence, had a couple of lyrical slip-ups too, but dependably hit her stride for Don't Rain on My Parade.
The fruit of workshops earlier in the day was the Pixar music, with Randy Newman's Toy Story hit You've Got A Friend In Me at its heart, bringing the professionals and the brass-playing school-pupils together at the evening's end. This was new ground for Lovatt and his team but clearly a direction they relish, and another indication that Perth Festival is heading confidently into the future.

Dakota Johnson's biggest problem? Movies not as strange and funny as she is

The star of 'Madame Web' and 'Materialists' has proven she's a droll, eccentric, and inscrutable presence off screen, writes Louis Chilton. Why does Hollywood seem unable to bottle that? Sometimes, movie stars are a lot like onions. Before you accuse me of pilfering my metaphors from Shrek, I should say I don't mean that they have layers – though plenty do, of course – but onions have a way of just going with everything. Some actors, the Florence Pughs and Jesse Plemonses of the world, share exactly this quality: you can put them anywhere – a comedy or a romance, a Guy Ritchie thriller or A Midsummer Night's Dream – and they'll never offend the palate. They just always go. Dakota Johnson is not one of these actors. Johnson, the 35-year-old daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, is in the middle of one of the more curious movie careers in recent memory. She was propelled to fame playing sexual submissive Anastasia Steele in 2015's glossy, schlocky erotic drama Fifty Shades of Grey – a box-office behemoth that was nevertheless widely considered abject pap. Johnson gave an admirableperformance, but still ended up shouldering most of the scorn. In the years since, there have been promising highs (her two collaborations with director Luca Guadagnino, Suspiria and A Bigger Splash) and guileless lows (last year's Madame Web, a deliriously bad attempt to launch Johnson as a soothsaying Marvel hero). Materialists, out in cinemas this week, slinks bashfully into the latter category.

Young boy given 'strength by Spider-Man' to walk unassisted for first time after meeting hero

Noah Connell, who suffers from Pierre Robin Sequence, walked unassisted for the first time after meeting Spider-Man himself at the Glasgow film set. A vulnerable schoolboy has been given the 'strength by Spider-Man' to walk unassisted for the first time after being invited to the Glasgow film set. ‌ Noah Connell, eight, who suffers from Pierre Robin Sequence and was born with part of his spine missing, an underdeveloped jaw, cleft palate, a small neck and a floppy airway, took his first ever unassisted steps just hours after meeting his idol, Spider-Man. ‌ Despite doctors doubting Noah would survive infancy, he defied all odds and was dubbed a 'miracle baby'. ‌ The Barmulloch youngster also happens to be a big fan of comic book superheroes. So when marvel movie crews descended on Glasgow city centre to shoot Spider Man: Brand New Day, Noah's mum, Jade Gordon, 26, whisked the family down to catch a glimpse of the web slinger. She said: 'Noah loves superheroes but his favourite is Spider-Man. 'With them filming the new one in Glasgow, we took him down on Tuesday August 5 to the set to see if we could get a glimpse of him and watch everything that was going on, like the whole of Glasgow. 'These crew members approached us and gave Noah a wee Marvel badge but we were shocked at what happened next.' ‌ The stunt crew on the film who spoke to the family, named Elliot Murray and Yusef, ended up arranging for little Noah to meet Spider-Man himself on Sunday August 10. Jade continued: 'He was meant to meet Spidey that day but due to Storm Floris, which happened on the day before, they were behind on filming so it couldn't happen. ‌ 'The lovely crew members took my number though and on Sunday August 10 they got back in touch to organise for Noah to meet Spider-Man. 'We got taken right on set and got to watch it being filmed before one of the Spider-Man stunt men came over to Noah and spoke away, gave high fives and took pictures. ‌ 'It was the real-life Spider-Man to Noah, he was over the moon. He was pretending to shoot his webs and Noah was totally engrossed the whole time. He soaked it all up. 'Noah is non-verbal but he was so fixated and was touching his suit as if he couldn't believe Spider-Man was right in front of him. 'It was a classic example of kindness going a long way. This memory will last forever. ‌ 'We always say Noah is our wee superhero but he has been fortunate enough to now meet his superhero.' Later that evening, once the family got home from the set, Noah, who requires a wheelchair for the majority of the time and round-the-clock care as he cannot eat or speak and is fed through a tube, walked unassisted for the first time. ‌ His mother Jade has said that Spider-Man was one of the reasons for his miraculous step forward. She said: 'We have said that it was Spider-Man inspired and Noah is the superhero now. 'It was a great day already before he completed such a major milestone. It was such an emotional moment. 'Noah has limited mobility but he is so determined. He has been trying to do that for a year now through working with physios and building up his power. 'He managed to take a few unassisted steps and we joked that it was Spider-Man who gave him the strength to do it.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Jeremy Renner gives an Emmy worthy performance in every episode.' They went on to describe each episode as a 'movie experience' and concluded the series has the 'same caliber of all around excellence' as Netflix's crime hit Ozark. ‌ And a final fan raved: 'I absolutely love this series and give both seasons 10/10.
