Samsung focuses on voice commands for XR headset

Samsung Electronics' coming extended reality headset will focus on a multimodal experience centred on voice as it prepares to enter its newest hardware category later this year, a senior executive has said.
The company is in no rush to release the device dubbed Project Moohan in a category that has yielded mixed results for even the biggest technology companies, said Hyesoon Jeong, executive vice president, and head of framework research and development at Samsung Electronics.
In XR, multimodal interaction includes voice commands, hand gestures, eye tracking, haptics and controller inputs. In more advanced cases, brain computer interfaces can be used.
Project Moohan, which is being developed in partnership with Google, was teased at January's Unpacked in California. Ms Jeong had previously told The National that it might not be released this year, but Google, at its I/O conference in May, announced that it will be available by the end of 2025.
'For XR, we are already developing the UI [user interface] and it will be applied and moving forward' while the hardware is being built, she said at a round-table on the sidelines of Galaxy Unpacked in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
'The interface we will develop [will be] more say voice centric and multimodal; that's the direction that we will go,' she added, without specifying what interactions will be included in Project Moohan.
Samsung's jump into the XR realm will pit it against some of the tech industry's top names in an increasingly crowded sector.
It is already well positioned to do so being the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer and a top chipmaker.
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, already has its Meta Quest line-up of AR headsets and teamed up with Ray-Ban to launch smart glasses, while Microsoft already has its HoloLens. Apple, Samsung's biggest rival in smartphones, has the high-end Vision Pro, which has since been discontinued.
Another advantage Samsung enjoys is its extensive partnership with Google, allowing it to tap into the Alphabet-owned company's major generative artificial intelligence platform, Gemini – and AI itself is a critical factor in the development of advanced XR systems.
For Google, it could be an opportunity to redeem itself from the failure of its Project Iris and, most notably, Google Glass, its first major attempt to bring the device into the mainstream that struggled with a number of problems and a hefty $1,500 price tag.
Google's Gemini was chosen by Samsung as its main generative AI partner over other platforms such as Microsoft's Copilot because of its 'openness', Ms Jeong said.
California-based Google is the developer of the Android operating system used in Samsung smartphones and is the owner of some of the most used apps globally, including Gmail and YouTube, in which Gemini is integrated.
'We thought that [Gemini] was optimised for the mobile environment. That's why we went with Gemini,' Ms Jeong said.
'Galaxy AI pursues openness, therefore, based on that philosophy, we continuously look at user needs and are always open to adopt to what users call for.'
'Respect' for user app preferences
Meanwhile, Samsung said it will maintain the presence of its native apps on its devices despite the dominance of Google's Gemini-backed services out of 'respect' for user preferences, Ms Jeong said.
A number of apps that are pre-installed on Samsung phones perform the same tasks such as Google's; for example, Samsung Internet, Samsung Music and Samsung Gallery are equivalent to Chrome, YouTube Music and Google Photos.
Samsung apps cannot, however, be considered as bloatware, which are apps that are unnecessary or hinder performance, as they are part of the Galaxy Ecosystem that connects the company's devices, similar to the interconnectivity of Apple's hardware and software.
Samsung also has its own Galaxy Store where users can download apps specifically programmed for the company's devices; Ms Jeong said Samsung has a substantial number of users tapping into their native apps, hence the reason they will stick to this strategy.
'There are other instances though where we have to respect the choice of consumers, as well and their feedback,' she said.
'There are still many people who use Samsung [apps] … we try to respect and give options when needed.'

In the epic 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, there's a line from Omar Sharif's character, Sherif Ali, that inadvertently illustrates the current conundrum posed by AI data centres. 'The well is everything,' Sherif Ali tells T E Lawrence, pointing to a well – a subtle motif that recurs throughout the film emphasising how scarce and coveted water supplies are in the desert. Fast forward to 2025, and although water is more readily available throughout the region, supplies are still vulnerable. According to the World Bank, of the 17 most water-stressed countries in the world, 11 are in the Middle East and North Africa, making it one of the worst-affected regions. At the same time, the region is in the middle of an economic renaissance made possible through artificial intelligence. Along with the promise of AI, however, comes the need for huge data centres capable of handling all the commands from users around the world. The data centres, consisting of incredibly powerful servers with thousands of central processing units and graphics processing units, need to stay cool somehow. This cannot be achieved by the small fans we've grown accustomed to in our laptops and desktop PCs. Many of the newest data centres have elaborate air conditioning systems and geothermal cooling set-ups, but they also often rely on liquid-based cooling methods – and that's where water comes in. According to Alphabet-owned Google's 2024 environmental impact report, the company's data centres 6.1 billion gallons of water, a 17 per cent increase compared to 2022. While not all data centres are the same, experts tell The National that cooling methods pose a challenge in terms of equitably maintaining supplies. 'The Gulf's data‑centre boom is running head‑on into the laws of physics,' said Mohammed Soliman, director of the strategic technology programme at the Washington-based Middle East Institute think tank. 'AI workloads generate far more heat than traditional cloud operations, and in a region where summer air can hit 50°C, cooling at scale is the gating factor on how big you can build up at scale to capture a significant percentage of the global compute map outside of the US and China.' Unlike the US and Europe, the Middle East cannot count on ample supplies of cold water for heat exchange, he added. That simple factor means companies operating data centres in the Middle East will have to use what is known as two-phase immersion cooling systems. These systems can help recycle and save water, though it can be expensive and they are far from perfect. Mr Soliman said newer data centres planned for throughout the Middle East might also be able to be paired with existing desalination plants, so the heat generated by the centres can be 'put to work' rather than wasted. He added that while the warmer climate in the region poses an initial problem, technology is quickly evolving, and once the cooling and water conservation methods are perfected for data centres, the Middle East will ultimately benefit. 'If you crack the cooling challenge in the Gulf … you unlock the one missing piece in an otherwise world‑class AI ecosystem,' he said. 'It would give the Gulf the ability to compete head‑to‑head with the natural climate advantages of Scandinavia and Canada.' Innovations could lead to the Middle East being the most optimal place to 'bring chips online', Mr Soliman added. Even in climates deemed more ideal for data centres, problems persist when it comes to keeping them cool. In late March, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said so many people around the world were using a new feature in the company's ChatGPT offering that the company's own servers began to encounter problems. 'Our GPUs are melting,' he posted on X. OpenAI temporarily put limits on how many people could use the new feature, he added. Meanwhile, as data centre construction has boomed over the past decade, the cooling technology making it all possible has blossomed. According to Markets and Markets' research, as of 2025, the cooling sector was worth about $11 billion, and if current trends continue, it is set to reach $24 billion by 2032. With environmental stewardship remaining paramount in many countries, companies in the technology sector seem keenly aware of the need to improve the efficiency of data centres, along with the need to cut down on the water many of them use. Thar Casey, chief executive of AmberSemi, a company that has 'pioneering and patented' digital power management technology, said increasing efficiency was key to maintaining the cool temperatures necessary inside data centres. 'If we're cutting the losses inside the centres through efficiency, are we going to need that much cooling? The answer would be no,' he said. Mr Casey – who recently attended the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit along with Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Mubadala's managing director and chief executive, and chairman of the UAE Executive Affairs Authority – said Gulf countries are showing tremendous interest in increasing the efficiency of data centres. He added that the UAE, which recently announced plans for 5GW UAE-US AI Campus, is showing a particular affinity for lessening the environmental footprint of data centres while maximising the newest cooling technology. 'It's extremely important to them and my message to these countries is that there is a way to solve the energy challenge inside the data centre,' he said, referring to AmberSemi's conversion lines and switch controllers used by semiconductor companies and makers of electrical products. Even the smallest increases of efficiency, Mr Casey said, could lead to significant electricity consumption, as well a major reduction in potential water used for liquid cooling methods of CPUs and GPUs. With the Middle East rapidly stepping up its AI ambitions, coupled with the region's affinity for improving water security, those data centre efficiencies could prove to be long-term game-changers.

New Emirates rule: Power banks can catch fire, cause explosions, say UAE experts

Power banks can pose serious safety risks on flights, including the potential to emit toxic smoke, ignite flames, or even trigger major explosions, safety experts have warned. Earlier on Friday, Emirates Airlines announced a ban on the use of power banks during all its flights, effective from October 1. 'Power banks indeed pose a significant fire hazard because they contain lithium-ion batteries, which have a high energy density,' said Dana Kamal, Director, International Business Development, MENA at NFPA. 'When exposed to physical or thermal stress, they can overheat, catch fire or even explode. In the confined and controlled environment of an aircraft, where factors such as cabin pressure, temperature fluctuations, and limited oxygen can impact battery performance, these devices can pose a significant fire safety risk.' According to David C., General Manager at Emirates Safety Laboratory, power banks contain lithium-ion batteries, which could cause the device to overheat when used. In a statement, Emirates said that customers will be permitted to carry one power bank onboard with specific conditions, but they may not be used while in the aircraft cabin—neither to charge devices nor to be charged themselves using the aircraft's power source. For several months now, airlines across the world have been updating their rules regarding lithium batteries, after an increase in the incidence of accidents. A Reuters report revealed that in 2024, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recorded an average of three incidents every two weeks involving overheating lithium batteries on planes worldwide — a sharp rise compared to just under one incident per week in 2018. Dangers Pilot and aviation expert Hans-Georg Rabacher explained that a power bank can overheat due to direct sunlight, poor ventilation, overcharging, or physical damage, and this can lead to a dangerous reaction called thermal runaway. 'This usually starts in one battery cell, which overheats and triggers a chain reaction. The result can be an explosion, toxic gas release, and open flames with temperatures over 1,000°C,' he said. Dana said that this was one of the 'key reasons' why airlines banned power banks from checked-in luggage. 'If a power bank begins to overheat, passengers or crew in the cabin can quickly notice signs such as smoke, heat, or unusual odours coming from the device, and can immediately notify the crew,' he said. 'Early detection allows rapid intervention from the cabin crew members, who are usually well-trained and equipped to handle such incidents, thereby minimising risks and limiting potential damage.' Low-quality items David added that some issues stem from low-quality power banks manufactured in various countries worldwide. 'Here in the UAE, we have excellent safety standards,' he said. 'However, some very low-quality power banks are manufactured in different geographies, and these could pose a significant danger during flights.' He states that these devices may look the same on the outside, but often lack the rigorous safety testing to ensure internal mechanisms prevent overheating or fire. 'This is why people need to invest in good quality power banks with international certifications, which will be indicated on their labels,' he said. David said that it was important for power bank users to ensure they are correctly stored when taking them on a plane. 'When they are stuffed in the overhead cabin or put in the seat pocket whilst charging devices, they could more likely overheat due to the lack of ventilation trapping the heat,' he said. Earlier this year, Air Busan became one of the first airlines to restrict power banks in overhead cabin bins after one of its planes caught fire; an incident thought to be caused by a power bank overheating. Experts added that physical damage, like banging a power bank, could cause the device to malfunction and overheat. 'I always stress the importance of a thorough visual inspection,' said Dana. 'Check for any visible damage, such as scratches or other signs of wear. Be alert for subtle warning signs such as unusual odours or chemical smells, as well as excessive heat. While it's normal for electronics to generate some heat during use, if a power bank feels unusually hot, it's a warning you should not ignore.' David said that technology is progressing quickly, allowing manufacturers to make a power bank without lithium ion batteries. Some are not producing power banks with nickel-metal hydride, alkaline batteries, and even capacitors.

Copper prices crept higher for a third consecutive session on Friday, bolstered by hopes of U.S. interest rate cuts after a central bank appointment and upbeat economic data in China. Benchmark three-month LME copper on the London Metal Exchange rose 0.2% to $9,700 a metric ton in official open-outcry trading, extending a rebound after touching its lowest in three weeks on July 31. U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced his pick to fill a vacant seat at the Federal Reserve, boosting hopes of interest rate cuts and weakening the dollar. A softer dollar makes commodities priced in the U.S. currency less expensive for buyers using other currencies. "The weaker dollar has been a key driver in August," said Dan Smith at Commodity Market Analytics. "You've got dollar weakness and China looking like it's in good shape. So the fundamental side feels like it's quite positive for the time being." Data released on Thursday showed China's exports beat forecasts in July as manufacturers made the most of a fragile tariff truce between Beijing and Washington to ship goods. The most traded copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose 0.1% to 78,490 yuan ($10,929) a ton. Smith said LME copper was looking potentially bullish in his algorithmic computer models, which seek to replicate fund activity that places buy and sell orders largely on momentum signals. "I think there's a chance that next week it will flip back into giving a buy-signal on copper, with an upside potentially up towards $10,000," he said. U.S. Comex copper futures added 0.7% to $4.43 a lb by 1215 GMT, bringing the premium of Comex over LME copper to $62 a ton. On the supply side, investors were watching developments in top copper producer Chile, where Codelco has sought permission to reopen a part of its flagship mine after a fatal accident last week. Other metals were mixed. LME aluminium was flat at official activity to $2,610 a ton and zinc was little changed at $2,812.50 while tin added 0.2% to $33,800, nickel eased 0.3% to $15,075 and lead was down 0.6% at $1,998.
