Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg dies at 65
The big picture: The Hall of Fame second-baseman played 15 seasons for the Cubs, which included 10 consecutive All-Star appearances and nine straight Gold Glove Awards.
Sandberg retired abruptly in 1994, but returned to the Cubs in 1996 before retiring again in 1997. After that, he served as an ambassador, broadcaster and coach for the organization. He also managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 2013 to 2015.
What they're saying: "Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans and will be remembered as one of the all-time greats in nearly 150 years of this historic franchise," Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement Monday night.
"His dedication to and respect for the game, along with his unrelenting integrity, grit, hustle, and competitive fire were hallmarks of his career."
Context: The fan favorite came to Chicago in 1982 after a trade with the Phillies.
He went on to become the Cubs' starting second baseman, hitting .285 for his career while slugging 282 home runs, 1,061 RBIs and stealing 344 bases.
Flashback: Sandberg was honored with a statue at Wrigley Field in June 2024 during the 40th anniversary of the "Sandberg Game," in which he hit two late-inning home runs during a game versus the St. Louis Cardinals.
He was named the NL MVP that season, leading the Cubs to the National League Championship Series.
He hit 40 home runs in 1990, only the third second baseman to achieve that feat at the time.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, and the Cubs retired his No. 23 jersey the same year.
Sandberg was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2024. He announced the cancer was in remission, but it returned late last year. He kept fans up to date on his treatment, announcing in mid-July that he was continuing to fight the disease.

Cal Raleigh Home Run Odds: Can Mariners Star Outslug Other Big Bats?
Major League Baseball Cal Raleigh Home Run Odds: Can Mariners Star Outslug Other Big Bats? Updated Aug. 5, 2025 1:27 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Are we on the cusp of crowning a new home run king in Major League Baseball ? Out of nowhere, Seattle's Cal Raleigh is swinging with the big dogs. He leads the sport in home runs (42), smashing more dingers than both Shohei Ohtani (38) and Aaron Judge (37) as of Aug. 5. Where will Raleigh land in his quest for his first home run title? Let's check out the odds at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Aug. 5. Most regular season total home runs Cal Raleigh: -150 (bet $10 to win $16.67 total) Kyle Schwarber: +280 (bet $10 to win $38 total) Shohei Ohtani: +400 (bet $10 to win $50 total) Aaron Judge: +500 (bet $10 to win $60 total) Eugenio Suarez: +1900 (bet $10 to win $200 total) Cal Raleigh regular season total home runs Over 62.5: +750 (bet $10 to win $85 total) Under 62.5: -1400 (bet $10 to win $10.71 total) First, the all-time single-season record of 73. Raleigh is nowhere near favored to approach that mark, set by Barry Bonds in 2001. In order to break that record, the Seattle slugger would need to hit 32 homers in the next 49 games. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. As for the American League record, Judge hit 62 home runs in 2022, breaking Roger Maris' previous record of 61, which he accomplished back in 1961. Raleigh would have to go deep 21 times in the next 49 games to pass Judge. The 28-year-old Seattle catcher has been a revelation in the Pacific Northwest this season. He was named an All-Star for the first time, and is third in Major League Baseball with 88 RBIs. ADVERTISEMENT In terms of his home run numbers, he hit two in 2021 (rookie year), 27 in 2022, 30 in 2023 and 34 last season, a number he had already surpassed prior to the All-Star Game. Raleigh hit nine home runs in the month of July, 11 in June and 12 in May. He is currently third in slugging (.597), fourth in OPS (.957) and third in WAR (5.4). Beyond leading the home run race, Raleigh is also the clear No. 2 in the AL MVP odds at +150. He made headlines last week by breaking the record for homers by a switch-hitting catcher. As for the odds to lead MLB in homers, Raleigh remains the favorite, with Kyle Schwarber not too far behind. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Florida's long snapper Rocco Underwood named to 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list
The 2025 Patrick Mannelly Award watch list was recently released and included Florida football longsnapper Rocco Underwood, who earned the honor last season after a superb campaign. The rising redshirt senior originally from Lake Mary, Florida, will have the opportunity to repeat the honor in 2025 following an effort that also resulted in All-SEC recognition, as well as being named a Phil Steele First-Team All-American and AFCA Second-Team All-American. He has also made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll thrice in his career, along with a SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll mention. Underwood has tallied a total of 314 special teams snaps over his four-season career in Gainesville, during which he made seven total tackles on special teams. Of those snaps, 103 of them came last fall when the special-teamer made significant improvements in his game across the board, amassing 56 successful punt coverages as well as 57 successful field goal and extra point attempts during that campaign. He notched his single-season career-high of three tackles in 2024, also notching his lone credited fumble recovery against the Florida State Seminoles. About the Patrick Mannelly Award The Patrick Mannelly Award was first issued in 2019 and is given to the best long snapper in college football. Named after Patrick Mannelly, who played as the long snapper for Duke University from 1993 to 1997 and was the long snapper for the Chicago Bears from 1998 to 2013. During his time in the NFL, Mannelly never recorded a bad snap and was credited with playing a pivotal role in the success of the kickers he played with. The award benefits Bernie's Book Bank, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding ways to help children develop their reading skills by providing free books to help build their home libraries in the local Lake Buff, Illinois, area. The 30-man watch list will be narrowed down to ten semifinalists on Nov. 17, with the three finalists being announced on Dec. 1 and the winner being selected on Dec. 13.
