Jo Malone defends Dubai's human rights record after relocating
The fragrance entrepreneur has lived in the suite of a five-star hotel in Dubai since 2021.
Malone, 61, described Sheikh Mohammed, the city's ruler, as 'the most wonderful leader' and said the UK and United States weren't perfect either.
She and her husband Gary Willcox are part of the now 240,000 or so who call the emirate their home.
Speaking to The Sunday Times about the human rights record and attitudes towards homosexuality, the perfumer said: 'I believe every person has the right to be whoever they want to be, but you think the UK has got everything right, and the US has got everything right?.
'Honestly, you tell me a place you can go and live where you can tick every box 100 per cent.'
She added that you had to respect the fact 'you are in someone else's country' before describing Sheikh Mohammed as 'just the most wonderful leader'.
Malone, whose visa entitles her to live for up to 10 years in the city where there is no personal income or inheritance tax, hopes she can continue 'beyond' that period.
On the tax systems back in Britain, the businesswoman who was raised on a council estate said: 'What happens is, you start to become disillusioned.
'And when you're working hard, you're paying your taxes, and then your child gets sick or your mother gets sick, and you take them to the hospital and you're waiting three days on a trolley.'
'I moved for opportunity'
She added that other Britons were also making the move 'like there's no tomorrow' because of the amount of infrastructure being built.
Malone said: 'I was ahead of the curve.
'I didn't move for all the obvious reasons. It was for me as a person. I moved for opportunity.'
Malone is now estimated to be worth £15 million after setting up her luxury perfume, candle and lotion business in 1990.
In 1999, she sold the company to Estée Lauder for millions before going on to launch Jo Loves in 2011 when her highly tuned sense of smell returned after overcoming cancer.

Staff from Tony Blair 's think tank were involved in discussions about turning postwar Gaza into a Mediterranean resort and tech hub, it was revealed today. Staff from the former Labour prime minister's Institute for Global Change (TBI) shared ideas for a 'Gaza Riviera' saying that the widespread damage caused by months of Israeli attacks had created a 'once-in-a-century opportunity' to redevelop it. They advocated Dubai-style artificial islands, a deepwater port and low tax 'special economic zones in a 12-person message group that included Israeli businessmen and staff from Boston Consulting Group, the Financial Times reported. The unpublished report added that there was a chance to build a 'secure, modern prosperous society'. Few of their ideas made the final cut of 'the Great Cut', a 35-page proposal put together by BCG staff and the Israelis that including a plan for a 'Trump Riviera' and an Elon Musk Smart Manufacturing Zone, before the multi-billionaire businessman fell out with the president. More controversially it included a proposal to pay up to half a million Palestinians to leave Gaza to allow it to be developed. TBI staff were not involved and a spokeswoman said it was opposed to any plan which tries to make Gazans leave Gaza. The idea of kicking Palestinians out of their home and turning Gaza into a holiday resort was suggested by Donald Trump earlier this year and members of his administration were sent the 35-page deck, the FT said. Just 15 days into his administration, Trump stood alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and said he wished to take over the Palestinian territory and turn it into the 'Riviera of the Middle East.' 'I don't want to be a wise guy, but the Riviera of the Middle East is going to be something that could be so ... magnificent,' he said of a plan which triggered widespread criticism. He later promoted an AI-generated video of what a Gaza Strip resort town could look like, depicting glorious beach resorts and ritzy hotels built over what is currently rubble. But since then the war has continued with little respite from the killing of civilians. Israeli strikes killed at least 60 people across Gaza today in some of the heaviest attacks in weeks as Netanyahu travels to Washington for a new ceasefire push by Trump. The TBI spokeswoman told the Mail that its staff had nothing to do with the final plan that was created, saying it spoke to 'many different groups and organisations with post war ''plans'' for Gaza'. 'TBI staff participated in two calls, as they have done with many other people with ''Gaza plans'' and interacting with them doesn't mean endorsement,' she added. 'Of course we're opposed to any plan which tries to make Gazans leave Gaza. We want them to be able to stay and live in Gaza. 'The TBI document referred to is an internal TBI document looking at proposals being made by various parties covering all the different aspects of what a post war Gaza could look like, though it is one of many such internal documents; but it was not produced in connection with the BCG work nor given to BCG. 'TBI's work in the region, since its inception, has always been dedicated to building a better Gaza for Gazans. Tony Blair has worked for this since leaving office. It has never been about relocating Gazans, which is a proposal TBI has never authored, developed or endorsed.' BCG last night said the work was 'orchestrated and run secretly outside any BCG scope or approvals' by two former partners who were 'categorically told not to'. 'We fully disavow this work. BCG was not paid for any of this work,' it added in a statement.

Sonatrach, Eni sign $1.35 billion production sharing deal
DUBAI, July 7 (Reuters) - Algeria's state oil and gas company Sonatrach and Italy's Eni ( opens new tab have signed a production sharing contract to explore and develop hydrocarbons, Sonatrach said in a statement on Monday. Total investments for exploration and development work in the so-called Zemoul El Kbar contractual perimeter are estimated at $1.35 billion, the statement said.

Lionel Messi is reportedly in talks with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli as speculation over his future continues to ramp up. Messi, 38, has been a transformative signing for Inter Miami since joining in 2023, with the Argentine icon scoring 52 goals and adding 25 assists in just 64 games for the David Beckham-owned side. His current contract expires at the end of 2025 and while Miami are desperate to extend Messi's deal, he has been linked with a fresh challenge. And, according to French outlet L'Equipe, a move to Saudi Arabia could be on the table. Back in 2023 when Messi left PSG, the forward was heavily linked with a transfer to the Middle East during the summer in which the Saudi Pro League (SPL) started making big splashes in the market. In fact, the 38-year-old was said to reject an unprecedented $400m-a-year (£294m) offer from Al-Hilal, who went on to sign Messi's former team-mate Neymar instead. And, according to the report, SPL figures have not given up hope of convincing Messi to join Al-Ahli, one of four clubs who are owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, alongside Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad. Although Miami are negotiating a one-year contract extension with Messi, the report adds that Al-Ahli have been trying to convince the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner to join them for several weeks. The finances involved in any potential deal have not been reported, but Al-Ahli are doing all they can to make a move possible. The reports in regards to Saudi interest in Messi come with the 38-year-old having previously signed a three-year deal worth approximately $25m (£18.4m) with the Saudi Tourism Authority to promote the kingdom. Messi has also previously opened up on the Saudi interest in him in 2023 and hinted that it is an option that could be possible in the future. 'I was thinking a lot about going to the Saudi league,' he told TIME Magazine in March. 'I know the country and they have created a very powerful competition that can become an important league in the near future. 'As the country's tourism ambassador, it was a destination that attracted me, especially because I've enjoyed everything I have visited, because of how football is growing in the country and because of the effort they are putting into creating a top competition. 'It was Saudi Arabia or MLS, and both options seemed very interesting to me.' If Messi was to join Al-Ahli, who won the AFC Champions League in 2024-25, he would join former Premier League stars Roberto Firmino, Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy and Ivan Toney in their squad. He would also come back into direct competition with his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese superstar signed a new contract with Al-Nassr. Meanwhile, Messi was recently in action at the Club World Cup before Miami were knocked out in the last-16 stage by his former club PSG after a 4-0 defeat. Nevertheless, reflecting on Instagram after the game, Messi expressed his pride at his side's performance. 'Today marks the end of the Club World Cup for us with a defeat against the current Champions League champions, where there are people I appreciate and I was happy to see again,' he said. 'We're proud to have achieved our goal of finishing among the top 16 in the tournament. Now let's focus on MLS and everything that's coming up.' Following that tournament, Messi was back in MLS action on Sunday and scored twice as Miami beat Montreal 4-1.
