Kilmarnock boss bemoans red card and penalty call in Livingston clash

Daily Record04-08-2025
Stuart Kettlewell confessed the game turned on the decision - but insists his defence should have dealt with the problem
Stuart Kettlewell confessed the game turned on a single moment as Killie let a two goal lead slip against Livingston on the opening day of the Premiership season.

And while the new gaffer admitted he felt aggrieved, he insists the points would have been in the bag if his backline had simply dealt with the danger.

A long ball over the top saw defender George Stanger and keeper Max Stryjek hesitate, with the end result being the centre-back being dismissed and a penalty awarded after he was ruled to have dragged down Robbie Muirhead inside the box.

The original decision had been to allow play to continue before a VAR check saw the double whammy punishment for the hosts.
Kettlewell reckons the hosts should have been awarded a free-kick but says they've only got themselves to blame.
He said: 'It is the classic case of that one moment changes a game of football. We can play better than we did in the first half, but we started turning the ball over, that's where we got two goals from.

'We had a couple of other opportunities to capitalise a little bit more but you're happy in this league going 2-0 at half-time.
'We were comfortable and then they throw a basic ball down the side of the centre-backs, our centre-back being in the dominant position.

'We expect them to deal with it. I'm not throwing anybody under the bus, it's just the basics of the game. Then that one moment, the red card, the penalty, the double punishment, makes it a difficult task.
'We shoot ourselves in the foot by the outcome. We can debate the red card and the penalty, but I think that we need to put ourselves in a position where we're not talking about that.'
He added: 'I do have complaints about the red card. I actually felt that Muirhead has the initial pull on George. If we deem both pulls the same, then is the foul earlier in the incident?

'I do want the centre-back to deal with the ball. I don't think it's going at enough pace to guarantee that it's going back to the goalkeeper. But even at that, George's contact, is it enough for Muirhead to go down in the fashion that he does? Is it a red card?
'I probably sit in the camp of it being soft. The game hinges on that one moment, in my opinion.'

Benjamin Nygren issues Celtic title warning to rivals as champions look to steal a march on Rangers

Brendan Rodgers' men could go SEVEN points clear of the Ibrox side ahead of the first Old Firm clash of the season Benjamin Nygren insists Celtic won't mind the gap as the playmaker warned the Hoops are only going to get stronger. ‌ Brendan Rodgers's champions made it two wins from two in the Premiership after Sunday's stroll in Aberdeen. ‌ The Parkhead men are tied at the top with in-form Hearts – but have already opened up a four point lead over rivals Rangers. ‌ And the Hoops are set for the chance to go SEVEN clear ahead of the first Old Firm showdown of the season with the Ibrox club planning to postpone their encounter with St Mirren if they seal progress to the Champions League play-offs. Celts have opted to play their clash with Livingston before their second leg encounter with Slovan Bratislava or Kairat ahead of the derby collision in Govan. Slick Swede Nygren insisted Celts are ignoring the early lead and are determined to put the foot down. And he's convinced this Hoops side are only just getting up and running. Nygren – who notched his first goal for the club in the 2-0 Pittodrie win – said: 'No, it (the gap) doesn't matter right now. It's too early. Our focus is on us and that's it. 'We've only played the first two games. I think it's natural that the more games the team plays together, the better it will be. 'It's very early in the season, but we've had a good start.' ‌ Nygren was thrilled to get off the mark against the Dons as Celts showed their quality. Boss Rodgers is determined to further bolster his squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month – with a striker and at least one winger on his shopping list. Celts are still in strong shape and Nygren said: 'It was a very good game and a solid performance from everyone. I think especially the players at the back had an amazing game. ‌ 'Aberdeen couldn't get through us and I thought, in general, that it was a very good performance. We had good control, a perfect win and a clean sheet.' Celtic will discover their Champions League opposition on Tuesday night with Kazakhstan outfit Kairat heading to Slovakia defending a 1-0 first leg lead against Slovan Bratislava. ‌ Nygren isn't bothered who the Hoops hit – as they will be going all out to join the big boys. He said: 'It's a huge dream for me. I think all players want to play in the biggest competitions. "There is no bigger competition in club football than the Champions League. It's a big dream and me and the team will do everything to get it. Who would we rather face? I don't know to be honest.' ‌ Rodgers is facing a race against time to snap up new stars in time for the Euro showdown – with his squad to be submitted by midnight on Thursday. The Hoops can add two players beyond the deadline though with Hoops chiefs chasing several targets. ‌ Rodgers's immediate target is keeping Celts on the trophy trail with Falkirk up at Celtic Park on Friday night in the Premier Sports Cup. He said: 'We are looking forward to it, very much so. An evening game at Celtic Park is always special. We want to impose ourselves in every competition. It's been a good start in the league and now we go into a cup game. 'It'll be a tough game. John McGlynn's team will be well organised, they'll be on the front foot and want to play. 'But we are in a good place as a squad and a team – and it's only going to get better.'

Nicky Devlin aiming for more trophies at Aberdeen as he tells Red Army they know league form is nowhere near it

The Dons head for Morton this weekend in the Premier Sports Cup as they look to get the campaign up and running Nicky Devlin has admitted their Scottish Cup win has given Aberdeen the taste to go for even more glory in the Premier Sports Cup. ‌ The Dons head to Morton on Saturday looking to finally get their new season up and running. ‌ Jimmy Thelin's side currently sit bottom of the Premiership after they l ost their opening two games to Hearts and Celtic. ‌ Last season's Scottish Cup triumph is becoming more of a distant memory but the Swede will be hoping for a change of fortunes and his impressive cup record will continue when the Reds head to Greenock on Saturday. 'We'll go down there to Cappielow under no illusions of how difficult it will be,' Devlin acknowledged. 'I think they beat Motherwell down there in the cup (a couple of seasons ago). They ran Hearts close in the cup last year down there. ‌ 'We're very well aware how difficult it will be, but as you said, we've had a good record in cups in recent years. 'I think since I've been here, we've got to the semi-final in every competition. 'We want to continue. We want to get to the later stages. ‌ 'We want to win trophies again. I think everyone got a taste for it last year. 'If you don't want to continue getting those kinds of feelings again, then you're probably at the wrong place. 'We know how difficult it will be, but we want to go there and win.' ‌ Aberdeen will be looking for some positivity in the cup ahead of their Europa League play-off later this month, where they will face the winners of the FCSB and Drita tie. They don't have another league game until the end of the month because of the cup and they requested the postponement of their game with Dundee United. It means Aberdeen will be rock-bottom for the next few weeks. The right-back said: 'When you look at the table, it's never nice to see your team where we are. ‌ 'We've had two difficult fixtures, but two fixtures we wanted to pick points up. 'It's not an excuse that we've had hard games. Everyone has to play these games. 'We wanted to pick points up from them. We've not done that, but it's about the squad and the team being able to come back from that. ‌ 'It's the opposite from last year. We obviously started amazing last year. We kind of win after win after win. 'We've started with two defeats now, so we have to bounce back and we need to do that, obviously, starting next week against Morton.' ‌ Aberdeen's league form has been pretty poor since the turn of the year with just five wins. Devlin knows for a club their size that is nowhere near good enough. He said: 'We know that. Towards the end of last year, we didn't, from probably January time onwards, we didn't pick up enough wins. 'Probably from before January, to be honest, December time onwards, we didn't win enough games in the league. ‌ 'It's definitely something we know we have to improve on, but we're trying to do that. 'We've got new players in this year that are still trying to maybe get ready. "There are a lot of boys getting up to speed, getting used to the way the manager wants to play and getting an understanding of the league because it isn't easy to win games. ‌ 'We'll hopefully pick up when the league campaign starts back in three weeks now or something like that. It's quite a while. 'We've got three games before our next league game that we want to make sure we progress in the two competitions.' Devlin was part of the last Aberdeen team that made the group stages under Barry Robson. ‌ Their domestic form dipped as a result but the Scotland international hopes lessons will have been learned and the squad has enough strength and depth to make an impact. 'I'd like to think so,' the former Livingston defender added. 'There's still quite a few boys that were here two years ago, so they kind of know the demands of it. ‌ 'The manager's obviously been involved in the competitions before, so potentially I'd like to think he'll know the demands of what's required. 'We have a much bigger squad now than we did when I first came. A lot more quality probably throughout the squad, so I'm sure it's something the manager will rely on.' A lot of the new signings are finding their feet but new striker Kusini Yengi has come in for some rather heavy criticism. Devlin admitted he and his team-mates have to create more for him. ‌ He explained: 'I think it's probably important for the rest of us to give him more opportunity. I think there were times today he was having to feed off balls that weren't great quality into him. 'He was fighting against two big centre-halves, which was making it obviously difficult for him. I think we have to probably get the ball in better areas, play more to his strengths. ‌ 'It's his first taste of being up here, it's only his second game in the league. 'I think it's probably more about other people doing a wee bit more to support him and getting the ball into areas where we know he can be dangerous. 'We've seen it in training already and we've seen it in some of the pre-season games. 'We have to play more to his strengths at times, get the ball into areas where we know he's going to hurt teams.'

Aberdeen 0-2 Celtic player ratings: The class act, three 8/10s, morale-sapped forward and 4/10 toilers

Celtic made it two wins from two in the Premiership after sweeping aside Aberdeen 2-0 at Pittodrie. The defending champions were well worth the three points in the north-east, with goals from Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate clinching the win. The opening exchanges were tentative before Celtic took the lead on 27 minutes. Kieran Tierney managed to get past Nicolas Milanovic down the left flank and he cut the ball back to Nygren, who had timed his run into the penalty box perfectly and he finished past a helpless Dimitar Mitov. Aberdeen's best chance had come from Adil Aouchiche from distance before the opener and Celtic went in deserved leaders at the interval. Daizen Maeda tested out Mitov from distance early in the second period, with the Dons trying to find a way back into the match without creating much at all. However, Celtic bagged the all-important second goal on 66 minutes. Nygren fed the ball into Hatate at the edge of the penalty box and he curled a sumptuous effort in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-0. Celtic saw out the game comfortably thereafter and lead Old Firm rivals Rangers by four points at this already early point of the season. 1 .
