MOVIE REVIEW: We suffer frightening familiarity with horror 'The Ritual'

Daily Record7 days ago
No emotional connection to cast and nothing on screen we haven't seen before in the possession-themed genre.
Young (Dan Stevens' Father Joseph Steiger) and old (Al Pacino's Father Theophilus Riesinger) priests team up to save a possessed young girl (Abigail Cowen's Emma Schmidt) - so far, so The Exorcist.

If only The Ritual was half as gripping, scary and engaging as that horror classic.

Inexperienced director David Midell's film is set in 1928 but truthfully I kept forgetting this as there is so little separating it from dozens of other possession-themed outings.

The main selling point of The Ritual for me was seeing Pacino make a mainstream comeback.
Sadly, he looks and sounds worn out and bored - if you want to see what the legendary actor can really do in a religious horror flick check out his barnstorming turn in The Devil's Advocate instead.

Midell co-wrote the script with Enrico Natale and it claims to be based on true events - 'one of the most documented possession cases in American history'.
So little is done, though, to make you care about any of the characters and there is absolutely nothing here that we haven't seen on screen before.
The most impressive thing about Midell's movie is that he attracted Pacino and Stevens to star in it.

Stevens, in fairness, is the cast standout, with Father Steiger, having just suffered a personal tragedy, being conflicted with saving Emma and the drastic measures being taken to do so.
As with any possession-afflicted victim on screen, Cowen's body is shaken and twisted from pillar to post but, as her plight is so familiar, the emotional connection just isn't there.
Ashley Greene's ( Sister Rose) only purpose seems to be suffering physical abuse at the hands of Emma and all Patrick Fabian's ( Bishop Edwards) presence does is evoke memories of his role in the vastly superior The Last Exorcism.

I really tried to give The Ritual the benefit of the doubt but as a horror fan who has been down this road so many times, I actually felt frustrated and fed up sitting through it.
If you're new to the possession film world maybe give it a go; otherwise grab that holy water and crucifix to keep it at bay.

‘Controversial' Disney+ crime drama divides fans over depiction of notorious murder case

A new trailer for an upcoming Disney+ true crime drama has left fans divided over its depiction of a real-life murder investigation Disney+ subscribers have been given their first full look at an upcoming true crime drama that's sure to spark controversy. ‌ Based on a notorious murder investigation in which a young woman was wrongfully imprisoned, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres in just under three weeks' time. ‌ As the provocative drama gears up for release on Wednesday, 20th August, fans have been given their first taste of the series with a new trailer dropping this week. ‌ Tell Me Lies star Grace Van Patten steps into the role of Amanda Knox, the woman at the centre of the media storm following the murder of Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy and the subsequent attempt to cover up her false imprisonment. Sharon Horgan, John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, Giuseppe De Domenico and Roberta Mattei also star in the series from creator KJ Steinberg, writer of This Is Us. ‌ A logline for the drama reads: 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox follows the eponymous American college student, who arrives in Italy for her study abroad only to be wrongfully imprisoned for murder weeks later. 'The series traces Amanda's relentless fight to prove her innocence and reclaim her freedom and examines why authorities and the world stood so firmly in judgment.' However, the drama has generated significant backlash from fans, despite Knox herself, along with Monica Lewinsky, serving as executive producers. ‌ When the new trailer was released on YouTube, several users took to the comments to express their distaste with the adaptation. One commenter claimed: 'Although Amanda is innocent, I believe that exploiting this tragedy further is wrong. The victim's family has made it clear that they did not want this series to be produced.' Kercher's sister Stephanie has admitted she finds it 'difficult to understand' the purpose of the drama, per the Guardian. ‌ Another used fumed: 'Making it about her again for profit. RIP Meredith, go away Knox.' ‌ Criticism continued on Reddit where one commenter asked: 'How many Amanda Knox shows is that now? 3, 4?' And another commenter said on X (formerly Twitter): 'I don't like all the focus on Amanda Knox all these years. I think the focus should be on Meredith Kercher and trying to find justice for her. 'It feels a bit weird - all other similar TV shows based on horrific crimes focus on the victims.' ‌ Despite the backlash, there are still plenty of true crime fans eagerly anticipating the new series, including X users replying to Knox herself promoting the series on X. One supporter replied: 'Looking forward to watching! Glad you're telling the story this time.' Will you be tuning into this divisive true crime drama or giving it a miss? The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres Wednesday, 20th August on Disney+.

Mum slams 'chaos' as Italian seaside town 'shoulder to shoulder with tourists'

Regina Simmons has hit out at a 'totally packed' Italian hotspot, claiming Positano was nothing like the tranquil paradise shown on social media. A tourist has described her holiday to an Italian seaside town as "complete chaos" claiming she was "shoulder to shoulder" with tourists. ‌ Regina Simmons, 38, had high hopes for Positano after falling in love with the 'amazing views' and 'calm, empty streets' shown in glossy videos on social media, including TikTok, reports the Mirror. ‌ But after flying 10 hours from her home in Las Vegas, Nevada, the mum-of-two said tat she and her family were disappointed with the historic town on the Amalfi Coast. ‌ Regina said: "In the videos, you see everything looks completely empty and calm. In real life there were far too many people. It was just bananas... We were overwhelmed by the amount of people. We had to look for a restaurant to hide in and make a game plan." Her experience comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Regina, her husband Dan, 46, and their daughters Sofia, 16, and Camila, 13, visited Rome and other hotspots across Italy last month. ‌ After watching TikTok clips, Regina anticipated "amazing views" along with "calm empty streets" and "locals buying fresh vegetables from the markets". ‌ From the moment they arrived at the train station, Regina said it felt "like a horror movie" as swarms of tourists packed the platforms. The businesswoman, who owns a chain of restaurants, hadn't expected the crush. "Positano is all these tight little streets and everyone is walking together. Half the people are going up and half are going down. It was complete chaos. Everyone was touching, shoulder to shoulder," the mum continued. ‌ "There are hundreds of beautiful videos of Positano which inspire you to go. This year feels very trendy - lots of my American friends are travelling to Italy this year." The couple imagined peaceful strolls, scenic views, and locals picking up fresh produce from quiet markets. ‌ But when they did spot a quaint shop or cafe, the crowds made it impossible to stop. Regina, who had stayed at a hotel in Sorrento and ventured east to Positano for a day trip, said: "We found everything was in English and there were Americans everywhere. I actually took Italian classes, and I never needed to use it." If they return to Europe for a holiday, the couple say they will look at other countries. Mum-of-two Regina continued: "If it's trendy on social media, everyone wants to do what everyone else is doing, Myself included... Don't believe everything you see on social media."

Here's how to mind your peas and cues

No, we don't mean Fantastic Four member The Thing. We're talking about Donald Trump, who enjoyed a working holiday in Scotland, where he has roots. There's been lots of coverage of the trip, though the comment we enjoyed the most comes from author and journalist Aris Roussinos on social media: 'The entirety of Europe's political class crawled to pay tribute to a Highland Gaelic warlord who also happens to be the American President. Objectively, this is the summit of [[Gaelic]] civilisation (so far).' Undone in London A Diary mention of Henry VIII reminds Bill Rutherford from Galashiels of his favourite example of graffiti, found on a poster on the London Underground in the 1970s. The poster depicted King Henry standing at the ticket counter and saying to the clerk behind the glass: "Return ticket to the Tower of London please" Somebody had written underneath: "And a single for the wife." Dead handy An ageing friend of reader Arthur Duke was moaning in the pub the other evening. 'It's a bit sad,' he said. 'I seem to go to more funerals than weddings nowadays.' Another of Arthur's friends disagreed with this statement, and said: 'I also go to more funerals than weddings these days. And I prefer it. At least you don't have to bring a present.' Seeing red On a night out some years back, reader Jenny Stevens got talking at the bar to a charmless chat-up merchant. It was a smoky club, and before the chap made his entrance Jenny had been rubbing her eyes. When the bloke arrived he glanced at the scarlet dress she was wearing, glanced at her face, then said: 'Red really suits you. Matches the colour of your eyes.' Life sucks Excellent advice from reader Amber Ewing: 'Don't wear headphones while hoovering. I finished cleaning the entire house before I realised that the vacuum wasn't plugged in.' T'd off Fashion statements don't always hit the mark. George Mitchell was strolling along Buchanan Street with his wife when a burly and bearded bloke ambled past wearing a Harley-Davidson T-shirt. Noticing the chap, George's wife whispered to hubby: 'It's all show. I bet he doesn't even listen to their music.' Wheely interesting fact A history lesson from reader Martin Pollock: 'The bloke who invented the merry-go-round and the chap who invented the Ferris wheel never met. They travelled in different circles.'
