Doctor and husband jailed for selling stolen NHS PPE on eBay during lockdown
A doctor and her husband were each jailed for 10 months yesterday after selling stolen hospital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on eBay during the first covid lockdown.
Crooks Attiya Sheikh and husband Omer Sheikh generated almost £8,000 from selling PPE, that they knew had been pinched from the NHS, on four eBay accounts between May and October 2020.
The couple were exposed after NHS Scotland supplier Fannin spotted its products for sale on the auction website.
Detectives found that the couple had been selling the much-needed PPE online for £15 to £20 when 'the world was in a heightened state of fear and anxiety' at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The pair were sentenced to 10 months in prison with Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill saying the doctor had committed an 'egregious breach of trust' while working at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, and that the offence 'merits a custodial sentence'.
Sheriff Gill slammed the couple and told them: 'Mrs Sheikh, you are 46, a health professional and at the time were a doctor with the NHS. At this time, the NHS was facing an unprecedented crisis, there was an extreme shortage of PPE, not only in this country but globally.
'As a doctor, you clearly knew this PPE was required for your colleagues and the safety indeed of their families. It is difficult to imagine a more egregious breach of trust not only in respect of your colleagues but of the general public.'
'You sold this stolen PPE for financial gain. Mr Sheikh, I don't differentiate between you and your wife. You done this together for sheer greed.'
Paisley Sheriff Court heard Attiya Sheikh worked as a doctor at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride, while her 48-year-old husband worked front-of-house at a family restaurant.
Dr Sheikh was sacked by the NHS the day after she pleaded guilty to the 'abhorrent offence.'
The town's court previously heard cops raided the Sheikh family home in Thornliebank in October 2020. During the search, 121 boxes of PPE, belonging to the NHS, were found in the couple's attic.
The procurator fiscal depute told the court: 'Officers searched the attic and found 121 boxes of blue medical gloves, facemasks and electronic equipment that included a silver iPhone.'
The value of the stolen items was put at £7,827.
Attiya Sheikh's lawyer, John Scullion KC, told Paisley Sheriff Court that his client bitterly regretted her actions. He said: 'She acknowledges the significant breach of trust the offence represents.'
Faye Cook, procurator fiscal for North Strathclyde, said of the case: "This was a particularly egregious crime.
'The public put their trust in medical practitioners. As a hospital doctor, Attiya Sheikh betrayed that trust at a time of acute need when patients and NHS staff relied heavily on the availability of PPE.
'For her and her husband to benefit financially from this criminal conduct will shock many people. But now they have both been brought to account for their crimes and must face the consequences of their actions.'
Gordon Young, head of NHS Scotland counter fraud services, added: 'This successful prosecution reaffirms NHSScotland's commitment to safeguarding vital resources for health service provision as intended by the taxpayer.'

Depraved female hospital worker and partner who likened themselves to 'Bonnie and Clyde' given lengthy jail terms for 'monstrous' child sex plot
A depraved woman hospital worker and her partner have been jailed for plotting 'monstrous' sex attacks on three young children, including drugging and raping them. Tracy Turner, 52, an operating theatre assistant at the biggest NHS hospital in Wales was caught planning the attacks alongside her partner Stuart Compton, 46. The pair swapped over 100,000 'excruciating' WhatsApp messages where they fantasised about kidnapping children to carry out vile abuse. They even planned to go to a 'hippy' music festival where lots of drugs were consumed and children would be left unattended. In one of the text messages between the pair they described themselves as Bonnie and Clyde, the American gangsters responsible for kidnappings and murders in the early 1930s. Pony-tailed Turner sobbed out loud and Compton sat with his head in his hands as the sordid details of their brutal paedophile fantasies centred on two girls and a boy were read to their court. Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe described how the pair plotted to kidnap a girl of primary school age who was known to them and take her to a dilapidated railway shed. He said: 'Their fantasy turned into an obsession which drove them to discuss over and over the sex acts they intended to perform. 'They spoke about a venue where their brutal acts would take place, woods and a cemetery were mentioned before settling on a nearby railway shed. 'They even created an awful euphemism talking about 'shedding'her and going to 'shed' her. 'The shed was real and has been located by officers, it is close to where they both lived.' The pair planned how they would subdue the girl to stop her screaming, 'clean' her after the sex attack and that Compton would take the blame if they were ever caught. Mr Cobbe said: 'They were clearly stimulated by the prospect of rape. This began as a fantasy but became an obsession and an intended goal.' While the pair dreamed up their brutal paedophile fantasies between 2022 and 2024, Turner continued working in operating theatres at the 800-bed University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff. Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard the pair came up with detailed scenarios with young children on holidays, in a swimming pool and at a hotel. The prosecution said they were 'fixated' by sexually abusing young children in the 100,000 messages recovered from their WhatsApp accounts. The pair wanted to take one of their intended victims to a hotel, drug her with diazepam and take naked photographs of her while she was asleep. Compton told Turner that was his 'favourite fantasy of all'. The pair's evil plans were uncovered after Compton was arrested for arranging a sex offence on a dating app he used. His girlfriend tried to cover for him by giving his mobile phone to a pub landlady. Compton and Turner, who have children of their own, pleaded guilty to six charges of arranging a child sex offence on three different children under the age of 12. The charges relate to rape and sexual assault on both girls and penetrative sexual activity and sexual activity with the boy, the eldest of the three victims. They pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to murder kidnap and rape a child under 13, and other sexual offences. The offences will lie on the file. Victim Personal Statements from the parents of the three children were given to the court which caused Turner to sob even louder in the dock. One of the mothers said: 'The thought of what could have happened by these people with monstrous sexual intent is unforgivable. 'It's like living in a soap opera or drama. How has this happened to our child? The guilt is overwhelming. How do we trust anyone around our children again?' Some of the depraved 100,000 Whatsapp messages between the pair were read to the shocked court. They included references to choking one of the young girls and details of how the couple would turn their twisted fantasies into reality. One message described how Compton wanted to rape a girl, of primary school age, in woods. He told Turner: 'There will be blood and tears, so be prepared.' In relation to their plans to abuse the young boy, Compton told his girlfriend: 'I'll be making this happen baby, for real.' A message from Compton on Christmas morning asked Turner of she would film him raping a young girl while she smothered the victim's screams. Turner replied: 'Your wish is my command, my king.' The two defendants sat in the dock separated by a prison officer and didn't speak to each other during the sentencing hearing which was attended by the victims' families. None of the three children were physically harmed by the pair but the court heard their crimes have had a life changing effect on their families. The parents of one of the girls have decided not to tell her that she was an intended victim because of her age. Turner denied a charge of perverting the course of justice by trying to dispose of Compton's mobile phone which will also lie on the file. The pair, from Cardiff, have no previous convictions. Turner was a senior theatre assistant at the University Hospital of Wales for 33 years and had an "unblemished career". She was suspended by the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board at the time of her arrest. Nicola Powell, defending, said: 'What possessed a lady with an unblemished career to be before the court today. She had a number of issues, financial worries and low mood. She had been diagnosed with depression after her parents separated in 1998.' Ms Powell said Compton had introduced her to cocaine and she took the drug every day, along with alcohol. She said: 'She hid her alcohol addiction from friends and family and in her work environment where she was in control of her day-to-day activities.' The court heard Turner was remorseful and would never forgive herself for the rest of her life. In a pre-sentence report she said: 'I loved Stuart, I just said what he wanted to hear. He would keep on and on about his fantasies until I reciprocated. 'I should have reported it to the police, I'm sorry every minute of the day. 'I would never have allowed any of the children to be harmed. it was just a story he was fabricating. I'm tarred with this for the rest of my life.' 'I'm very sorry and ashamed, I'll never forgive myself for the rest of my life.' The court heard Turner had ended her relationship with Compton and had spurned his attempts to contact her while they have both been on remand. 'She has ended contact for good.' said Ms Powell. Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke jailed Compton for life with a minimum term of seven years before he can apply for parole, saying he was the 'driving force' behind the offences and had discussed his fantasies with others on the internet. The judge said Compton had described graphic accounts of what he wanted to do to the children and both defendants were sexually aroused by the ideas they discussed on WhatsApp. Turner, wearing a grey and black tracksuit top was jailed for 12 years plus two years on extended licence. The judge told the pair: 'The discussions on WhatsApp were not pure fantasy, you both intended to carry out what you had talked about together. 'Your actions devastated the parents of the children. Their feelings are understandable, they have no reasons to blame themselves.' Both defendants were made the subject of Sexual Harm Prevention Orders. Detective inspector David Butt, of South Wales Police, said outside court: 'A small team of detectives reviewed in the region 100,000 text messages sent between Tracy Turner and Stuart Compton. 'The volume and nature of the content was disturbing, the worst of the worst. 'Offenders like Turner and Compton believe they can hide behind phone screens. But this is clearly not the case. 'The successful conviction of these two dangerous, high-risk sexual predators will ensure that children are protected.' A spokesperson from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: 'We can confirm that Tracy Turner was dismissed from the Health Board on the 12 March 2025. 'The safety and wellbeing of our patients is our highest priority. 'We would like to take this opportunity to reassure patients that the criminal case is entirely unconnected with the individual's employment within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.'

Age verification UK explained: How is it impacting the UK?
In short, social media and other platforms are required to implement safety measures protecting children or face large fines. This means that age verification tools are now being used on sites where they could access harmful content. Here's all you need to know about the new rules and how they are being implemented. Well done to everyone who campaigned to ensure age verification for pornography was in the Online Safety Act! Today it comes into force and while no doubt there will be some who get around it, it means young kids in particular won't be stumbling on violent and harmful porn. The Online Safety Act is a piece of legislation that received Royal Assent on October 26, 2023, with the aim of protecting children and adults online. The Government website adds: "It puts a range of new duties on social media companies and search services, giving them legal duties to protect their users from illegal content and content harmful to children. "The Act gives providers new duties to implement systems and processes to reduce risks their services are used for illegal activity, and to take down illegal content when it does appear. As of July 25, internet platforms have a legal duty to protect children from harmful content. Companies within the scope of the act must introduce safety measures as part of this, which include age verification. The Guardian reports: "This means all pornography sites must have in place rigorous age-checking procedures." They continued: "Social media platforms and large search engines must also prevent children from accessing pornography and material that promotes or encourages suicide, self-harm and eating disorders." Platforms will also have to suppress other material that could be potentially harmful to children. This could include "the promotion of dangerous stunts, encouraging the use of harmful substances and enabling bullying". Ofcom, the media regulator, has set out a number of ways websites can verify the age of users. This can be done through credit card checks, photo ID matching and estimating age using a selfie. Whatever format platforms choose, they must be "technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair," BBC News reports. Pornhub and a number of other major adult websites have confirmed they will introduce enhanced age checks, BBC News reports.
