Gujarat is celebrating its foundation today, May 1. This auspicious occasion marks the establishment of the state after the bifurcation of the Bombay State in 1960. Gujarat, the country's ninth-largest state by population and fifth-largest by area, is home to over 6 crore people. The state borders Pakistan in the northwest, Rajasthan in the north, Madhya Pradesh in the east and Maharashtra and the Union territories of Diu, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli in the south. The Arabian Sea borders the Gujarat state both to the west and southwest.
Gujarat is known as the Jewel of the West. From the white sand dunes of Kutch to temple towns, the state is adorned with natural beauty. Gujarat also has a rich history, with its soil bearing witness to ancient civilisations, trade routes and cultural exchanges.
Gujarat Day history and significance
The Gujarat state came into existence on May 1, 1960. On the same day, Maharashtra was also formed to address the demand of the Marathi-speaking people. Both these states were carved out of the Bombay State, where these two linguistic groups demanded their separate states. To fulfil their demand, the states were formed through the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960. Since then, the statehood foundation days are celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal.
Gujarat Day is not just a celebration of the past but also a reaffirmation of Gujarat's commitment to progress and prosperity. It is a time to honour the contributions of its people, who have worked tirelessly to build a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.

Responding to the growing demand for English-medium education, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation will convert five of its schools into semi-English institutions KALYAN: With demand for English-medium schools, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has decided to convert five out of its 61 schools—including 55 Marathi-medium schools—into semi-English medium institutions. In these selected schools, Mathematics, English, and Science will now be taught in English. KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel stated at a press conference that the civic body has renovated all its schools this year. The upgrades include repairs to school buildings, painting, replacement of damaged benches, and other facility improvements. He further added that around eight schools were completely renovated and newly equipped. Additionally, KDMC has made arrangements to distribute books, bags, and raincoats to students on time as the academic year begins. KDMC's Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Jadhav mentioned that out of the total 61 schools, two are Urdu-medium, one Hindi-medium, and one Tamil-medium. The remaining are Marathi-medium schools attended by children from economically weaker families who cannot afford private education. Considering the rising preference for English-medium education, KDMC has decided to convert one school each in Titwala, Kalyan East, Kalyan West, and Dombivli East and West into semi-English schools. To support this change, KDMC's education department has appointed its best teachers to these schools. This initiative aims to help underprivileged parents provide English education to their children without the financial burden of private schooling, while continuing to support Marathi as a medium of instruction.

CM inaugurates new govt Urdu library
Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed building of the Govt Urdu Library on Ashok Rajpath. Considering the abundance of books in the library and the increasing number of readers and researchers, an administrative approval of Rs 3.07 crore was granted in 2021 under the state scheme for the construction of this G + 4 building. The library has approximately 40,000 books and has a total of 1,057 permanent members. It has a rare collection of Urdu newspapers from its establishment year, 1938, which are made available to researchers as required for their research. It also has a collection of 84 books of "The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi " and other rare books. In addition to the Urdu script, books in English, Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, and Hindi are also available in this library. The Urdu collection includes books and magazines on poetry, literature, novels, medical science, history, economics, geography, mathematics, logic, law, and other subjects. Books related to competitive examinations in Urdu, including DElEd, undergraduate, postgraduate, and general competitive exams, are available here. Books on various subjects related to general competitive examinations and NCERT books from Class III to Class XII, library science, and journalism are also available at the library. Additionally, important and competitive examination magazines in Hindi, English, and Urdu are received monthly, and Hindi, English, and Urdu newspapers are regularly subscribed. Education minister Sunil Kumar and additional chief secretary of education department S Siddharth welcomed the CM.

Dog sterilisation drive resumes in Chandigarh after three-month halt
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has resumed the animal birth control (ABC) programme for the sterilisation of stray dogs with immediate effect at the ABC Centre, Raipur Kalan, Chandigarh. Speaking about the development, MC commissioner Amit Kumar said that the programme had been temporarily put on hold since February 25 this year due to administrative reasons. It will now be carried out directly by the MC, ensuring a more efficient, humane, and systematic control of the stray dog population in the city. He said that the ABC programme is a crucial step towards managing the stray dog population in a scientific and compassionate manner. The commissioner emphasised that all sterilisation procedures will be conducted strictly in accordance with the Animal Birth Control Rules and animal welfare guidelines, ensuring the safety and well-being of both animals and the community. He requested the citizens to cooperate in this important initiative by reporting unsterilised stray dogs in their Sectors, colonies, or nearby areas. Information can be shared with the dog control cell of the MC through the contact numbers already issued.
