Liston shines as 10-man Mohun Bagan beat Mohammedan 3-1

News1831-07-2025
Kolkata, Jul 31 (PTI) Liston Colaco struck a brace as 10-man Mohun Bagan Super Giant beat Mohammedan Sporting 3-1 to begin their Durand Cup campaign at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Thursday.
Despite going down to 10 men in the 43rd minute after Apuia received a straight red card for retaliation, the record 17-time champions Mohun Bagan dominated the proceedings through goals from Colaco (23rd, 90+5) and young Kashmiri striker Suhail Bhat (63rd) who later appeared to suffer an ankle injury in stoppage time and had to be taken off the field.
Mohammedan Sporting's only goal came via Ashley Koli in the 49th minute as he pounced on a rebound after Lalthankima's shot was parried by Vishal Kaith who wore the captain's arm band.
Colaco opened the scoring with a sublime free-kick before the momentum briefly swung Mohammedan's way after the sending-off of Apuia.
But, the Mariners held their nerves and snatched the lead.
Liston's clever run and through-ball found Suhail, who struck on the second attempt to restore the lead.
Late into stoppage time, Liston converted a penalty to complete his brace after he was fouled by Mohammedan captain Pukhrambam Dinesh Singh inside the box.
The win will bring relief to Mohun Bagan after their recent 2-3 defeat to arch-rivals East Bengal in the Kolkata derby, albeit with a developmental side.
The Mariners are missing foreign recruits and head coach Jose Molina, who are expected to arrive in the second week of August. They were guided by interim coach Bastab Roy. PTI TAP PDS PDS

Keymer seals title in Chennai with a round to spare

Agency: Chennai, Aug 14 (PTI) Vincent Keymer completed a landmark triumph, becoming the first sole champion at the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2025 meet with a round to spare. The 20-year-old German, playing white, drew his match against Dutchman Jordan van Foreest, while results elsewhere confirmed his tournament victory. Keymer's dominance over a star-studded field also catapulted him into the world's top 10 on the live rating list, underlining his arrival among the game's elite. 'Entering the top 10 in live rating is a milestone I have wanted to reach for a long time, and I am very glad that the hard work finally paid off," Keymer said. 'Winning the tournament and breaking into the Top 10 at the same time is fantastic for me and truly special. However, the tournament will continue tomorrow. That is why I prefer to remain focused and keep the tension for the last round." Elsewhere in the Masters, all five games ended in draws, a rare full split that keeps the race for second and third wide open heading into the final round. Arjun Erigaisi and Karthikeyan Murali–playing each other on day 9–remain in contention alongside several close pursuers, with every half-point on the final day set to carry weighty implications for both the standings and crucial FIDE rating gains. In the Challengers, GM Pranesh M tightened his grip on the leaderboard with a crucial win over GM Harika Dronavalli, taking a half-point lead (6.5) into the final day. Right behind him, GM Abhimanyu Puranik stayed in contention by defeating GM Diptayan Ghosh, while GM Leon Luke Mendonca's draw with GM Pa Iniyan kept him level with Abhimanyu and just half a point adrift of the top. GM Adhiban Baskaran's victory over IM Harshavardhan GB and GM Aryan Chopra's win against GM Vaishali Rameshbabu rounded off the day's results. President Droupadi Murmu Lauds India's Global Chess Domination: 'A 19-Year-Old Girl...'

President Droupadi Murmu praised India's chess dominance, highlighting young prodigies like D Gukesh and Divya Deshmukh. President Droupadi Murmu praised India's global chess dominance in her national address on Thursday, highlighting the country's impending 'transformative changes" in the sporting domain. Eighteen-year-old D Gukesh's victory as the youngest world champion last year marked the beginning of an exceptional season for India's chess prodigies, including R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidith Gujarati, Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, and R Vaishali, who consistently excelled in high-pressure international events. Last month, nineteen-year-old Divya Deshmukh became the youngest women's World Cup winner, defeating Humpy in the final. 'Our youth, brimming with new confidence, are making a significant impact in sports and games. Chess, for instance, is now dominated by India's youngsters like never before. We foresee transformative changes that will establish India as a global sporting powerhouse under the vision of the National Sports Policy 2025," said President Murmu. 'Our daughters are our pride, breaking barriers in every field, including defence and security. Sports are vital indicators of excellence, empowerment, and potential. A nineteen-year-old girl (Deshmukh) and a thirty-eight-year-old woman (Humpy) from India were the finalists in the FIDE Women's World Cup for the chess championship," she stated. 'This highlights the sustained and globally comparable excellence among our women across generations. The gender gap in employment is also narrowing. With 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam', the empowerment of women is now a reality rather than just a slogan," she added. The National Sports Policy mandates accountability from administrators and establishes procedures to 'ensure ethical practices, fair play, and healthy competition in the sports sector." It also advocates the creation of national agencies and inter-ministerial committees for swift action and effective issue resolution, promoting transparency and seamless operations across the sports ecosystem. The policy proposes a revamped funding mechanism, including initiatives such as 'Adopt an Athlete", 'Adopt a District", 'Adopt a Venue", 'One Corporate-One Sport", and 'One PSU-One State" where feasible. Following the policy's unveiling on July 1, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya presented the long-awaited National Sports Governance Bill in Parliament. The landmark legislation, ensuring a strict regulatory framework for National Sports Federations and a speedy dispute resolution mechanism, has been passed by both houses of Parliament. Mandaviya, who termed it the single biggest sporting reform since independence, has pledged to implement its provisions within the next six months.
